    Small Business Saturday: The Grommet

    This Saturday, November 30th is Small Business Saturday, a tradition that American Express started only a few years ago, but has gained enough steam to project close to 5 billion dollars in consumer spending last year as a result. It started as a way to empower people to make a difference in their own community, giving their dollars and support to their own town, or one that means something to them. It has since grown to be that and so much more.

    At The Grommet, we stand behind our makers and the majority of them are also small businesses. From Brooklyn, NY to Ann Arbor, Michigan to Bozeman, Montana, our Grommets are being made and manufactured in these towns where people live, work, play and call home. So this year we’re letting our Community know that by shopping for their favorite products on The Grommet, they’ll be supporting people all across the U.S., as well as The Grommet itself. We too are a small business located outside Boston, in a town called Somerville, MA. We’re proud to be located in this “maker dense” neighborhood and do our part every day to give back to the town that has given us so much.   • 5 Steps to Take Your Product From Concept to Reality

    Last week The Grommet co-founder and CEO, Jules Pieri, was interviewed by Entrepreneur Magazine to discuss insider tips on how to bring new products from initial concept to successful reality. Jules has posted to her personal blog here and we are posting the article in its entirety below as well.

    Jules Pieri started The Grommet, a product-launch platform, after realizing that contemporary entrepreneurs have ready access to manufacturing technology such as 3-D printing but no easy way to get their products into consumers' hands.

    Since 2008 The Grommet has brought 1,500 companies and 6,000 products to market through its online store, which produces video reviews and social media campaigns that emphasize the people behind the products. Says Pieri: "Our first cut isn't: Will this product sell well? It's: Do people want to know this story?"

    Pieri, who serves as CEO, walked us through the steps for taking a product from concept to reality.

    I have an idea for a product. Now what?
    Make sure there's a large market opportunity. I see a lot of mompreneurs, for instance, who are solving a very narrow problem that their child will have for only six months. Don't overlisten to your own needs. Do Google searches and see how many people are searching to solve the same problem. Check reviews on Amazon to see whether there are existing products.

  • The Rise of the Social Entrepreneur

    Business and philanthropy are two words that haven’t always been seen together, and some might argue they're polar opposites. Things like corporate social responsibility have always existed, but often in silos, unrelated to the core mission of an organization. Here at The Grommet, we've noticed a growing trend recently where these lines are crossing and companies are existing to do good and watch their bottom line at the same time. More and more companies are popping up that combine a social change aspect such as donating their products, or a portion of their proceeds to a charitable organization.

    So is the business world shifting to be more conscious overall?

    We think the answer is yes. Looking at the world holistically, we see a far different place than even 20 years ago. Technology has allowed us to operate on a global scale and the internet has created a whole new way to create change, which people are finding new ways to do every day (think crowdfunding platforms which is a fairly new business).  The line between business and good has blurred as more companies realize their obligation and potential to help their customers, community and other stakeholders.

  • Fancy Yourself a Bread Baker? 5 Homemade Bread Recipes

    Who doesn't love warm, velvety soft bread right out of the oven? When baked well, it can taste like little melting clouds in your mouth. Add in hints of cinnamon or honey and you could be destined for bread heaven. You may also be surprised to know just how many types of homemade bread recipes there are -- wheat breads, sweet breads, flat breads (the choices are endless). Not to mention that making bread at home is a time honored tradition and a great family activity.

    We recently launched the Sassafras Bread Dome, giving our community the option to make freshly baked bread recipes right in their own kitchen. If you're a bread lover, but thought making your own would be too daunting, fear no more. Our new friends, Steven and Nancy Schwab have shown us that home baked bread is not only delicious, but easy.     Sometimes you need to strip down to the basics. So many products these days are pumped, loaded and infused with more additives to make the product bigger, better and last longer. Too often this means that our goods are less natural and often less healthy for us and our environment. Many of our Grommet partners believe in making a more natural world void of harsh chemicals and additives. The founder of S. W. Basics, Adina Grigore , found herself having bad reactions to most skin care lines. She knew there had to be a better way and when she realized that she could create real skin care with less than 5 natural ingredients, she knew she was on to something. The press noticed too.   • U.S. Air Force Officer with a side of Entrepreneur

    At The Grommet, I spend my days working to build our community and promote our partners. It’s a wonderful feeling to see a partner succeed, but I find it most rewarding when I have the chance to hear their stories firsthand.  Recently, I was lucky enough to chat with Matt Butler, founder of Rollors, the outdoor lawn game. His passion for entrepreneurship and for helping others realize their dreams was very palpable. It was inspiring listening to him describe his journey. In addition to launching and growing Rollors, he works full-time for the U.S. Air Force!

    What gave you the idea for Rollors?

    Matt: While I was deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, I spent my days supporting combat missions.  It was a tough, trying time and I often thought of my friends and family back in the United States. I dreamed of being on the water, sipping a refreshing drink with close friends by my side. I thought about how much we used to love playing Bocce and Horseshoes on the beach. It was then that I was struck by an "aha" moment which eventually transpired into my product, Rollors. When I returned to the U.S., it was the height of the recession and I saw many skilled veterans out of work. I decided to help by recruiting those who were interested to help me make Rollors. I provided work for those who needed it and I got my product off the ground at the same time. I saw it as a win-win situation.

    Let’s face it. Even if you think you know how to shop for men, what they want to receive is probably not what you think.  Men can be surprisingly particular, unpredictable and downright difficult to shop for when it comes to gift giving.

    But don’t throw in the towel and pick up a gift card just yet, we're here to help. This week we decided to do some investigating and go straight to the source.  We asked some of our favorite Grommet guys for tips we can use when shopping for them.  Get your pen and paper ready because you may need to take notes.

    Question 1: Do you like to be surprised when given a gift or do you always want to know what you’re about to open?

    Majority Says:  No surprises. However our Business Analyst, Ian, did say he likes surprises once in a while. “I like being surprised, but only if it’s a really good gift. I typically buy myself items that I want. I don't wait around for someone to buy them for me.”

    Take Away: When in doubt, don’t surprise. He’ll be just as appreciative even if he knows what's inside the box.
