Beyond resolutions - make life a little better.

We recently found inspiration in the story of two women, Ginny Hutchinson and Cathy Haffner, who've launched a movement they call better because. These two friends and former bankers recently left their high-powered corporate jobs and created better because - a platform, they say, for inspiring positive change through individual actions. Today, they're sharing a post based on their book better because of you (and giving away a copy to one lucky reader). Hope it inspires you as we dive into a new decade!

by Ginny Hutchinson and Cathy Haffner

At the start of each year, many folks firmly resolve to grow (learn), shrink (diet), or become better (meditate).  Forget the resolutions; deciding to make life just a little better each day is a great way to start the New Year.

Life’s a gem, with many facets. Make it a little better every day with ideas like these:

1.  Health: Look Up

Take time to be present. Relish the ordinary moments. Be aware of now, not the past or the future. Look up from your phone, laptop or TV. See what’s going on around you.

2.  Wisdom: Find a Gratitude Object

Find a stone or special object to carry during the day.  Each time you hold it, think of someone or something you appreciate.

3.  Work: Pretend You’re 90

Look back on your life as if you’re 90.  List what’s made you most proud, happy or grateful. How does this change your decisions today?

4.  Play: Choose Uplifting Music

Look through your music library. Create a playlist with music to lighten your mood, relax or give you energy.

5.  Others: Smile; It’s Contagious

Have you ever walked down the street or ridden an elevator, and noticed how many people are looking down or grumpy? Be the first to smile and add some positive energy to your surroundings.

Our favorite motto is “If it’s to be….it begins with me.”  You have it within yourself to make this your best day, best year, and best life ever.  Little by little, making small steps of progress is what it takes. If you have set-backs or obstacles, they’re part of life’s wonderful adventure too.  It’s your choice in seeing challenges as barriers or stepping stones.   The day is yours, make it count  -- go for it!

This sounds like a great read. My life is better because of the friends and family who I have around.

Thanks for the chance to win a copy.

  • Katherine Says:

I'm not eligible to win a free book but I absolutely love your positive attitude and wanted to thank you for doing your part to make the world a better place! "My life is better because"....I really, really got lucky with finding the right guy to spend my life with. Lucky, since at first I'm pretty sure it was mostly his handsome looks and crooked smile that captured my heart.

  • JulieFBT Says:

Ginny & Cathy - I love your approach to helping others and would love to read your book and share it with my teenage daughter. My life is better because of my family - my husband who saved me from self-destruction and my kids who inspire me with their dreams and unconditional love.

  • Ginny Hutchinson Says:

Today, I'm feeling especially grateful for my relatinoships - those in my family, friends, collegues and people like you who I don't know, but feel connected to!

What a terrific book idea. Enjoyed the post and the tips. It's so wonderful to see friends go into business together - to do good and to promote an idea or concept. I'm on a daily mission to share a smile with people I meet along the way - eye contact and smile - brightens your day and theirs!

    All the best,
    Lynn

  • Ginny Hutchinson Says:

    Lynn,

How wonderful that you're smiling at others! You're flexing your happiness muscle and spreading good feelings. It's amazing how the simple act of smiling (particularly at strangers) can be positively contagious and brighten both of your days!

We've found smiling as a great thing to pass along....the funny thing is, sometimes it's misinterpretted as "flirting"...when you didn't really intend it that way. Have fun with your daily, smiling mission!

Smiling back at you - Ginny

  • Cathy Haffner Says:

Thanks for sharing your wonderful "Better Because" stories. It's such a great inspiration to see what makes your life a little better.

My life is better because of my wonderful family - Noll, to whom I've been married for 21 years, my delightful daughters Brittany, Katrina and Cassidy (who are my sources of joy) and my friends, who make me laugh!! For Brooks, our golden retriever, who inspires me every day to love life!

And, for Ginny, for making a dream come true...

  • jeanneconnon Says:

I'd really like to thank you both, Cathy and Ginny, for cheering us on and making us pause to think about this important question - something I know I'd never otherwise take the time to do!

My life is better because of my girlfriends who've stood by me for more years than I care to remember -- I love the fact that even in the middle of their busy lives and hectic schedules I know I'll have their full attention whenever I need it. Of course, my husband and children make every day better for me too. And did I mention my parents, my brother and my sister? It's hard to stop once you get going ... guess that's the point.

Thanks everyone and looking forward to seeing who Ginny & Cathy select as our winner; you'll love the book.

  • Cathy Haffner Says:

It really is fun to remember what makes our life "better because"...and you're right, Jeanne, once you get started, it's easy to get on a positive roll!

    Thanks again for sharing!

  • Louise Cady-Fernandes Says:

My life is better because I know that I'm at the helm of making it better. My Dad use to say that in life that you need someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to. This is such a great quote but all these good things don't just appear at your doorstep unless you are out in the world drawing them to you. My life is also better because at the ripe age of 48 I am usually at peace with myself. There is really something to be said for being comfortable in your own skin, and believing in yourself. From here the possibilites are endless.

  • Christine Keene Says:

My life is better because... of the unconditional love of my girls whose friendships stand the test of time. It's really easy to be a great friend in the happy days, but when the going gets tough (which it can at times) the tough get going. And my girls make the tough times better!!!

  • Ginny Hutchinson Says:

[...] This blog post inspired me to think about how to make 2010 a great year.  It’s by friends at a company called Daily Grommet, that finds and shares information about extraordinary products.  They feature a book called Better Because Of You.  The book reminds us that small things can make a difference, that gratitude is an important practice, and that we need to remember our core values in the midst of active days. • Sara Roberts Says:

Knitting and crocheting makes me a better person for several reasons. #1 My project to knit as many hats as possible during the year for those children in Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Jimmy Fund ward and to know each one has love knitted into it.
#2 Both crocheting and knitting keeps my arthritic finger moving.

  • anne in stonington Says:

Going through a tough time right now and reminding myself to think positive and think of others is one way I can keep smiling. Right now I'm teaching some friends how to crochet which is lots of fun - especially when one of them realizes that, yes, she can do it! Sharing projects and making things for others is another way to keep going - giving things make me feel happy and sharing something that I can do. Thanks to Lion Brand yarn, patterns, how tos, etc. because your whole group have been helping me!
