Meet the Maker: Britta Cox of Aquis

In our Meet the Maker series, you hear from our Makers on their journeys as entrepreneurs and how you, The Grommet Community, have changed their businesses for the better.

Today, we're catching up with Britta Cox of Aquis. Britta leaned on her experience in fitness apparel and performance fabric to create a unique material that changes the way you dry your hair. Her product, Aquis, absorbs moisture without getting water-logged.

Meet the Maker of Aquis

Tell us more about your design inspiration.

I think I’m more of a creative thinker than an artist. I’m ever curious and observant and find inspiration from making connections in the world. I get pleasure from being resourceful and finding solutions. I grew up on a ranch where you learned how to figure things out, to use your hands, fix things, make things and to be observant. At a young age I interacted a lot with animals which instills instincts in you that can be used in many aspects throughout your life.

What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?
You need competent and committed people to help you grow the business. Identify your core strengths and also your blind spots and then seek the right people, people and attitudes that will supplement your capabilities. Give them the canvas and the inspiration to deliver their best. Focus on executing what delivers real value rather than what feels good to you and create narrative in the process. For us entrepreneurs it is easy to get off track. We start a business because we are passionate about something, but you must start with your end goal and work backwards.

Meet the Maker - Aquis Towel

What three personality  traits do think have helped you become a successful entrepreneur?
Strong work ethic; Innate desire to be of high integrity; Level headed and able to juggle many things even under challenging conditions.

What lessons have you learned over the years that might help other entrepreneurs who are just starting out?

A. Focus.
B. Be in tune with timing. Know that things always go in cycles, try to anticipate them and make decisions accordingly.

What has surprised you most about starting a business?
How an idea can take shape by simply writing down ideas and action plans and executing on those. The surprise comes when you realize you’ve built something beyond yourself. It quickly becomes its own entity that takes on a life of it’s own. Pretty soon you are just chasing to keep up with it. But watch out, you need to maintain control of it and ensure you are forming it and keeping it on it’s track and not letting it run away the wrong direction. If you focus on creating a great product that people need, the community will quickly follow and you will be in business before you know it.

MTM quote Aquis

What has been the most rewarding part of business for you?
Creating something that people need, love and that becomes a part of their lives. When you talk to people and read reviews to learn how passionate people are about your product and how much it helps them, it makes all the hard work worth it. I so often hear from people that AQUIS is so precious to them that they take it with them when traveling–this means a lot!

How has business changed since your launch on The Grommet? How has the support of the community helped?
Creating a great product is one thing, but it is the loyal AQUIS users and evangelizers that makes it sustainable! I’m so grateful to The Grommet and community for your support of AQUIS and to spread the word so more women and people can experience stronger, healthier hair by doing less. You inspire me to continue to bring you the best possible products and information and go beyond my usual canvas.

  • Judy Says:

What is the difference between the Crepe towel and the Luxe towel?

  • Tori Says:

    Hi Judy,
    The Crepe is like a towel-meets-turban and is 7.25" x 5.75" x 1.75". The Luxe is larger, 19" x 42". Hope that helps.
