Meet the Maker: Carol Bildahl of Lofti

Here at The Grommet our mission is to put an end to nameless, faceless business and highlight the people and the stories behind the products we launch each day. And it's in that spirit that we're continuing this series to further share the stories of our Makers with you. Get to know them better, learn more about their journeys as Makers and entrepreneurs and learn how you, The Grommet Community, have changed their businesses for the better.

In this installment we're catching up with Carol Bildahl the founder of a Lofti –a clothes-drying rack that suspends from the ceiling by an easy-to-use pulley system. Inspired by the laundry drying habits she witnessed during a trip to Ireland, Carol decided to reinvent the clothesline making it simpler than ever to let your clothes air dry. We recently caught up with Carol to learn more about her journey as an entrepreneur and what business is like since launching on The Grommet.

Meet the Maker: Lofti

What three personality traits do think have helped you become a successful entrepreneur?

I am fearless, determined, confident, and always thinking out of the box.

What lessons have you learned over the years that might help other entrepreneurs who are just starting out?

If you are not good at some aspect of the business, hire someone to take care of that part, i.e. bookkeeping. And be prepared to work very long hours.

Meet the Maker: Lofti

What has surprised you most about starting a business?

I was amazed at how many people were so helpful to share their knowledge and experience. Reaching out to experienced people and asking for 20 minutes of their time is invaluable.

What has been the most rewarding part of business for you?

To see my products that were a doodle on a piece of paper to thousands of products shipping out the door.

How has business changed with your launch on The Grommet and the support of our community?

The Grommet has been the greatest venue for launching my products. People in Europe understand air drying clothes and ceiling mounting clothes drying racks. The Grommet visually explained my product to the customer helping them to understand how it worked for customers here in the US. That is what it needed. And The Grommet community support to help small businesses like ours in Bozeman, Montana helped make us successful.

  • Vicki Says:

I love my Lofti. It has been installed about 6 months now. We purchased it to complete a new laundry room in our house. It is perfect.

  • pamela Says:

i wish you had a 'wish list' choice. my funds are limited right now, but when i see something i want on grommet i would like to earmark it with a wish list. sometimes it's hard to go back later and find what you were looking at before. thanks for considering adding this feature to your website. i thought you had it at one point, but couldn't find it recently when i wanted to 'wish list' it.

  • Helen Says:

This system was used here in the USA back in the thirties and forties, before everyone had automatic clothes driers. I remember the one in my aunt's kitchen in her NY apartment.

  • Karen smith Says:

ever since my first trip to Scotland, living with a family, I came home telling my husband how easy it would be for him to make those, yet, 14 years later, I do not have one. I am great with playing instruments, teaching children music, but not tools. Since my husband won't make it, I will need to purchase yours...and thank you. As for Mr. smith, well, he lost out!

  • Pamela Gorby Says:

I love my lofti!!! Best, invention for air drying clothes, and the best part is there up and out of the way. I've had a lot of compliments on it. So, I've told everyone that has ask where I got it. I said I got it at the Grommet. Thanks!

  • Adele Sasson Says:

We had version of that when I was 5 years old. I am 83 now.
I remember eating dinner in the kitchen and wet clothes were dripping in my plates.I was just telling my Grandchildren about it at dinner the other night.Good Luck Adele Sasson

  • Ellen Says:

I have had my Lofti for more than a year now, and I absolutely love it. My sister ordered one, too, and my friends have shown interest. Thank you!

  • rilla Says:

I have had the metal end pieces for my "dryer" for 0ver 30 years now, waiting for hubby to concoct a hanger. I love the idea of them for drying clothes or hanging pots. Yours is very nice looking.

  • Tori Says:

Hi Pamela, You can add any product to your wishlist by clicking the blue "Add to Wishlist" button found to the right of the orange "Add to Cart" button.

  • kelly Says:

I totally love this thing. My laundry room is small and I was always bumping into the drying rack on the floor. I am thrilled with this.

  • Carole Says:

We have had our lofti for almost a year now. I love it! It is installed in our walk in closet and it is one of the best tools I have. Thank you. I love simple and traditional ways to save money and energy.

  • Brandi Says:

If this product is hanging in a laundry room over a washing machine, I'm concerned the water droplets will eventually rust the appliance. Why not just use a clothesline outside? Also why is this product so expensive?

  • Susannah Says:

I am always interested in ways to make my life more "green.
" Regarding the "Lofti," does it work in humide as well as dry climates? I live in Washington, DC and my laundry room is in the basement. Would so love to include a lofti into my routine, but will clothes dry in the humidity?

  • Carol Says:

Hi Brandi, Most washers spin dry clothes so well there is usually no water dropping of them. This product is a quality made product, the pulleys, rope all made to last. If you do 5 loads of laundry a week and air dry 3 you will have your LOFTi paid off in about 4 months, by saving on your energy bill.

  • Carol Says:

Hi Susannah, My daughter lived in Washington DC and she loved her LOFTi/DUO, clothes dry, it just takes a little longer. She did have to stick towels in the dryer.
