Meet the Maker: Diana Wright of Pulleez

Here at The Grommet our mission is to put an end to nameless, faceless business and highlight the people and the stories behind the products we launch each day. And it's in that spirit that we're continuing this series to further share the stories of our Makers with you. Get to know them better, learn more about their journeys as Makers and entrepreneurs and learn how you, The Grommet Community, have changed their businesses for the better.

In this installment we're catching up with Diana Wright, the Maker behind the sliding hair ties, Pulleez. Launched on The Grommet last June, the Grommet community has rallied behind this fashion-forward problem solver. Diana came up with the idea while working as fashion producer when she needed a backstage solution that would slide out quickly and easily leaving models’ hair runway ready in no time. We recently caught up with Diana to learn more about her experiences bringing her product to life.

Meet the Maker: Pulleez

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A veterinarian. I loved animals! Still do.

What three personality traits do think have helped you become a successful entrepreneur?

I’m persistent, I’m self-motivated and I’m kind. Many people undervalue kindness in their work. I think most of the things I accomplish with Pulleez would never happen if people didn’t know I would treat them well and genuinely appreciate their kindness in return.

Tell us more about your design inspiration.

My background is in fashion, and I was always drawn to accessories with a twist. An accessory should be beautiful but ideally, for active women (and men) like me, it should be functional as well.

What has surprised you most about starting a business?

What has surprised me the most is the amount of time that it takes to make everything work. Whether its creating a new style, photographing products, bringing the product to market … the time involved to accomplish these things is extraordinary.

Meet the Maker of Pulleez

What has been the most rewarding part of business for you?

That people enjoy and appreciate our accessories. Good sales are wonderful, but when I unexpectedly see someone wearing a Pulleez it makes my day.

What would be the name of your biography?

‘Pull it Together.’ It would be more of a how-to rather than a bio that would show, based on my experience, how the right visual tricks and style adjustments can help you both personally and professionally to achieve your goals.

It's almost been a year since you launched with us. What role has the support from The Grommet community played in the growth of your business?

We were amazed at the reaction we received when we launched on The Grommet. We never expected the sales, the positive comments…it was truly validating. The Grommet community appreciates products that work for them, so if you’re a Maker that is trying to create something different and better and then you get a positive response, it legitimizes your efforts. After our successful initial launch I met The Grommet Team at a trade show in Dallas. Watching people’s reaction as they walked by the display of products and saw 'The Grommet’ sign was incredible. It was like they came to life! We continue to be surprised by the support we receive from both the Grommet Team and the Grommet community of customers.

  • J. B. Says:

These things work. Could you offer some in a more masculine style? Guys wear ponytails too.

  • Trish Says:

I have thin, fine hair. I wear it long and pulled back. Until recently I could not find anything that would not slip off. How heavy is your product?

  • Bonnie Says:

I now own all of your pulleez bands and have given several as gifts...can't get enough! I save the metal ones for "dress"...I too would love to have a smaller size for my 4 year old granddaughter....she likes to play with my ponytail and always says, "grandma, you're wearing the pink one today!" Pink being her favorite color. Can't wait to see more colors and styles! Denim blue please!

  • Sandi Costello Says:

i HAVE VERY TENDER SCALP AND AM ENDLESSLY SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING THAT WILL HOLD MY HAIR BACK/UP WITHOUT TORTURING ME. COULD THIS BE IT?!!! BUT I WANT THE BRAIDED SILVER ONE...ANY CHANCE?

  • Diane Says:

I bought the colored acrylic pulls with decorative items at the ends .My granddaughter is 4.5 yrs super fine hair. My daughter in law says they work well & stay in.

  • Annamarie Stevson Says:

Where can I purchase your ponytail holders.

  • Will Lindengrass Says:

Love the product VERY SORRY THEY ARE NOT MADE IN USA

  • Steve Underwood Says:

Loved this story... Thank you, Diana! As an entrepreneur with a product "launching soon", your thoughts on the value of 'kindness'... worth their weight in gold. Very kind of you.

  • Angela Says:

Hi Barb thank you for asking! Our acrylic products are perfect for girls over the age of 3 as they are super light and stay put in even the finest hair.

  • Judy Says:

  • Richard Says:

Where can I buy this item I have been looking for my pony tail?

  • Barbara Says:

    what is the cost?

  • Barbara Says:

    How much is this pulleez/

  • Angela Says:

Hi Lindengrass! Actually, our acrylic Pulleez are made in the USA.

  • Angela Says:

Judy thanks for your feedback… did you try our acrylic Pulleez? They are designed for very fine hair and are so secure that they are used by many women's teams when they work out and play. They are also slightly smaller than our metal charms.

  • Angela Says:

J.B. we love men who wear ponytails! We do have a silver skull Pulleez on a black cord that is a man favorite. We will try to get it up on the Grommet website soon.

  • Angela Says:

Trish, thank you for your question about the weight of our product. Our acrylic product is virtually weightless in the hair, and it is also the tightest hold of all of our products and thus recommended for very thin hair. Our metal products are super light as well, with the nugget and hearts the lightest of the charms.

  • Angela Says:

Sandi we hope that Pulleez is the answer to your prayers and if it is please let us know! The braided (knot) Pulleez is our most popular style and if it is currently sold out please know that another shipment landed at The Grommet today and will be available shortly so please try back:)

  • Tori Says:

Barbara, they range from $12-$16. You can find all the information here: https://www.thegrommet.com/pulleez

  • Tori Says:

Richard, you can find them here: https://www.thegrommet.com/pulleez

  • Laura Says:

I am looking for the silver knot seen in the video.....any help would be appreciated.

  • Eden Says:

May I suggest rewording the gender-specific distraction at the opening of this Meet The Makers segment from the limited "... women ( and men) ..." to a simpler, more inclusive "people" for ease of reading, and perhaps more in keeping with This Makers value system of Kindness?

  • Tori Says:

Great suggestion Eden. Thank you for the comment.
