Meet the Maker: Megan Gutman of 365 Lacquer
In our Meet the Maker series, you hear from our Makers on their journeys as entrepreneurs and how you, The Grommet Community, have changed their businesses for the better. Today, we're catching up with Megan Gutman, the Maker who invented 365 Lacquer. Megan crafts her vegan nail polish in small batches right in Massachusetts.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Some of my first real hobbies growing up were design and makeup, so I've always wanted to do something in that realm. I would have never thought that I would start something myself, though!
How did you and Victor end up starting a business together?
Victor and I met in the startup world, so in a sense, this area of work has always been part of our relationship. I loved the energy at the internship I was at, and after graduating college, I wanted to try to start something that was relevant to my interest in cosmetics. Victor was supportive from the get-go and began to help me build 365 from the ground up. Although this is not Victor's full-time gig, he holds the roles of resident biochemist, web dev, and all around other half to 365.
Where do you find design inspiration?
Creative freedom. Being able to create any color you can dream of really makes your mind run. We are super excited to grow and have a larger variety of pigments and glitter.
How do you get around creative blocks?
I get up and do something else. Different work, relax, clean, whatever works at the moment. Victor calls me a 'cleancrastinator'.
What has surprised you most about starting a business?
Businesses are so intricate. There is so much that can be done to help grow and optimize a business, so many routes to explore, and it has been enlightening to look under the hood. It was never something I put much thought into beforehand.
What lessons have you learned over the years that might help other entrepreneurs who are just starting out?
Especially important for very small businesses, know your talents and your role. Victor and I have very different skill sets, so we have very different roles in 365. It helps us to cover a lot of ground and be efficient. At the same time, be willing to do tasks outside your role, because sometimes you need more manpower and things just need to get done.
How has business changed since your launch on The Grommet? Has our Community helped 365?
We have accelerated like crazy! We've received insightful feedback, have been able to grow and improve, and it's all thanks to The Grommet's community. Thank you so much to all of the support. This has been an amazing experience.
