Meet the Maker: Mike Mallory of RAD

In our Meet the Maker series, you hear from our Makers on their journeys as entrepreneurs and how you, The Grommet Community, have changed their businesses for the better.

.
Today, we're catching up with Mike Mallory, the Co-Founder of RAD body massage tools. Mike (a biomechanics expert) and Dan McIntosh (a pro triathlete) put their brains and muscles together to redesign traditional body massage tools.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Ages 4-8, I wanted to be a garbage man (who doesn't want to ride on the back of a truck the whole day right?). By ages 8-14 I wanted to be an orthodontist, and past that I wanted to be a mechanical engineer. My background in mogul skiing and mountain biking (and subsequent injuries) brought me back to study anatomy and therapy very deeply.

What three personality traits do think have helped you become a successful entrepreneur?

I have a unique background in engineering, design, and the body–the trifecta of those brought me to the perfect role at RAD.

What lessons have you learned over the years that might help other entrepreneurs who are just starting out?

The #RADLife isn't just about staying healthy and making great products, it's about hard work, task management, and picking up a broom if need be. Having a good product is just the ante for the game. Pushing it out into the marketplace takes discipline and an attitude for success; something my business partners have helped bring to the table in spades.

What has been the most rewarding part of business for you?

We see people at trade shows that run up to us in the booth, and tell me they've been using it for three years continuously, and it's so key to their healthy lifestyle that they literally have one in their backpack or briefcase and pull it out to show me! I love the fact that our products are able to help so many people and make a difference in their lives.

Do RAD products make a good gift? Who would you gift them too?

Yes! Rollers and rounds are great stocking stuffers and we give them to all our friends and family. We always hear back things like, "you know that roller you gave really helped my wife's shoulder..." etc. Everyone needs a strong healthy and upright body, and it doesn't matter if they're old, young, athletes, or disabled–we've got ways to help that are simple and effective.

How has The Grommet Community helped your business since you launched back in January?

The Grommet Community has been a huge support for sharing our message and mission. They keep the excitement high, and spread the word and help boost our message to people we might not otherwise reach. People reach out to us from all kinds of places that we didn't even suspect. The team at The Grommet has been super supportive, helpful, and inspiring.

Bring the price down and your sales will immediately go up by one third, then with word of mouth by satisfied customers both physically and financially you will see a steady growth of 10-15% quarterly! Don't price yourself out of the market

I just received mine and as a massage therapist I can tell you it's wonderful for self care and for teaching clients some techniques they can do at home. I'm not big on massage tools to use in my practice, but this truly fills a need for self care for both practitioners and clients. Thanks for innovating!
