Meet the Maker: Spencer Quinn of FiberFix

In our Meet the Maker series, you hear from our Makers on their journeys as entrepreneurs and how you, The Grommet Community, have changed their businesses for the better.

Today, we're catching up with Spencer Quinn of FiberFix. The idea for a tape that would harden like steal came to mind during a routine visit to the doctor's office, when the physician relayed a story about how, instead of duct tape, he once used medical casting tape to temporarily repair his ATV. This sparked Spencer's interest to start experimenting on how he could use this same material to fix things.

Meet the Maker FiberFix

What did you want to be when you grew up?
For as long as I can remember I wanted to own my own practice as a medical doctor, it took me several years in college to realize that what I really wanted was to own my own business.

What three words best describe you as a Maker?
Observant
Patient
Ambitious

What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?
Challenge every assumption. Information and opinions flow freely with how accessible information is today. You really need to ask yourself whether the source you're receiving information is credible. You'll be surprised how hard it is to find credible sources today.

What lessons have you learned over the years that might help other entrepreneurs who are just starting out?
I think the most important lesson I've learned is the importance of selling someone on an idea before you actually develop your product. Sure, there are companies out there that spend millions of dollars releasing products each year trying to anticipate demand. However, for entrepreneurs who are just starting out, you need to validate there is actually a market and demand for your product/service before you start investing in your idea heavily. I know too many entrepreneurs who are invested too early or took on an investment too early, it's a trap that take many entrepreneurs by surprise.

What has surprised you most about starting a business?
I was surprised to learn how many people I interact with are actually entrepreneurs. In fact, I don't think I've met a single person who doesn't have the desire to start their own business. Initially, someone may say they aren't interested in having their own business, but the more you talk to them about their passions, you realize they have had an idea, or have developed something they would like to see come to market.

What has been the most rewarding part of business for you?
Watching my team's ideas transform into physical products and become a brand is perhaps the most rewarding part of business. Additionally, even though trade shows can be long, it's always rewarding to see people interact with your product and decide to purchase.

How has the support from The Grommet Community made a difference for your business?
The Grommet has provided massive exposure for the FiberFix brand. In the past, we thought FiberFix wouldn't sell online. The Grommet has proved us wrong. The community that the Grommet has built supports entrepreneurs and they know an innovative product when they see one. We're excited to introduce many more innovations to the community with the Grommet pressing forward.
