SCAD students shine in Project UDesign

Daily Grommet has a fondness for Savannah College of Art and Design, or SCAD. We have spent time scouting at SCAD looking for future Grommets. We have also had the pleasure of working with SCAD students -- Claire (our most recent intern) and Julia (former intern, now permanent team member).  So when I noticed Leslie Carothers tweeting about a new design competition involving SCAD students, I  immediately knew that I wanted to learn more. After speaking with Leslie about this innovative contest called  Project UDesign, I wanted to share it with all of you and also lend support to the design students who are participating.

15  SCAD design students were asked to design a wing back chair that would be made using BioH (a soy-based ingredients for foam). The 15 designs have now been narrowed down to 6  and now the vote for the final three designs has been opened up to the public.

Why do we think this is so cool? The top 3 finalists will move onto the final round of online consumer selection and have a chance for their chair to be added to the Century Furniture line. The winning chair will them be made by Century Furniture using  BiOH® polyols and Ultrasuede Interiors -- the winning student designer will receive royalties for their chair!

You can check out all 6 chairs and cast your vote on BioH's Facebook page. You can also learn more in this video introduction of the 5 semifinalists.

Good luck to all 5 semifinalists! We will be following along and waiting to see which student's design will win Project UDesign.

Thank you for the support of Project UDesign! We are very excited about this opportunity for SCAD students to incorporate soy-based BiOH® polyols foam with their design and furniture construction process to make their wing-chair more environmentally friendly. I can’t tell you my fave but what is yours?
