  • The Power of Collaboration: How To Find Light In a Power-less Place

Here at The Grommet, we love the Makers and products we work with—they‘re a part of us, they make up who we are. Each Grommet has a purpose and each Maker has a story to tell, and it is our mission to share these with the world.

Our journey has shown us over and over again that when we as consumers support companies who do good, good things happen. Simple as that. A perfect example of this is the collaboration between two do-good Grommets—Haiti Projects and Luci by MPOWERED.

  • It's Our 9th Birthday!

In the last year, we: partnered with Ace Hardware, a relationship that was so successful they acquired a majority stake in The Grommet; launched 336 new products from small businesses around the world; eclipsed 500K social media supporters; opened a pop-up shop on Boston Common then; our first brick and mortar store in the Natick Mall; connected with 10,000 Retailers nationwide through our Wholesale site; debuted The Grommet Perks program. And those are just the major highlights.

The Grommet, the place to discover new, innovative products from Makers, inventors, and entrepreneurs is celebrating its ninth anniversary.

Thank you all for your help in making this a truly special year. We couldn't have done it without you.

  • Participate In Giving Tuesday, On Any Budget

The post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy may be winding down, but as you finish checking off your gift list, consider joining in the Giving Tuesday movement.

November 29th is the global day of giving. Following Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is often overlooked, but since it’s inception in 2012, this movement grows every year. Celebrate with us and together we can make a real difference.

Similar to Small Business Saturday, one of the best ways to get involved is in your own community. Giving Tuesday organizers share that helping others comes can come in many different forms. Give the gift of your time, donations, goods, or your voice. We’ve put together a list of nonprofits that we admire to get you started that fit any budget.

  • The Grommet Solves the Problems of SXSW

Five members of The Grommet team, myself included, headed to SXSW Interactive 2016 in Austin, Texas with one goal: solve any problem presented to us with a dozen Grommets we brought with us. Also water. That was a savior. It seems even the sun is bigger in Texas.

We met thousands of people, most of whom had never heard of The Grommet, which presented an exciting challenge. Spreading our message and showcasing some of the innovative products we've discovered on the streets of Austin was an exhilarating experience we're just now recovering from. Seriously. We lost voices and I nearly passed out from dehydration. You might be asking, "How is that possible? You had so much water with you." Believe me, I'm aware of the irony.

For those of you who follow our daily launches and happenings but couldn't attend SXSW, we put together a snapshot of our experience. And if you're looking to solve your own problems on a daily basis or looking for the perfect gift for someone you know (Mother's Day and Father's Day are right around the corner), take a dive into the abyss of our products. You're bound to find something.

  • Kick off the National Week of Making with a local shop

After last year’s National Maker Faire, we were delighted when the White House declared June 12-18 would be the national “Week of Making." Here at The Grommet,  we're kicking off National “Week of Making” with meetups at local shops from coast-to-coast.

The Maker Faire, is the “Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth” and embodies the pulse of the Maker Movement as hundreds of Makers and tens of thousands of attendees take part in this “family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness." Now, dedicating a week to celebrate Maker communities nationwide is the perfect way to continue embracing the Maker economy.

    National Week of Making

To celebrate during the week of June 13-18, The Grommet is hosting a series of “Maker Economy Meetups” at independent Retailers from coast-to-coast. We're excited to keep growing the Maker Economy with you and other shoppers, Makers, and supporters.
The Meetups will connect local and regional Makers, Retailers, and consumers much like a local farmer’s market, where shoppers get to know the people behind the items they buy. Makers and shoppers will also get a chance to meet local Retailers who are working on the front lines to drive the Maker Economy forward.

  • Make a Difference in Nepal

On April 25, the Nepal earthquake took the lives of several thousand and displaced hundreds of thousands more in the region. This past week, another earthquake hit Nepal further damaging the area and complicating relief efforts for this tragedy, which remain constant as those affected work to rebuild their lives.

Seven Grommet Makers work in or source from Nepal and neighboring countries. While thankfully none were among the casualties, some saw their homes destroyed and all of them are in the process of helping their country cope.

For the next week, The Grommet will be donating proceeds from the sales of these products (below), to Nepal relief funds to help in their efforts.

Lollycadoodle creates cat caves and pet mats sourced and made in Nepal by local artisans at a fair trade facility. All products are made of renewable, naturally breathable and insulating wool that are water and dirt-resistant. They keep your pet warm in the winter months while maintaining body temperature and minimizing odor in the summer. Shop now

  • On the Road: Meet us in San Francisco

Another week and The Grommet is popping in to another amazing city – next up, San Francisco! It is no secret that San Francisco has a vibrant startup culture and one of the biggest clusters of Grommet Makers is nestled in the Bay Area, nearly 3000 miles from our home base. We're eager to pay this group a visit.

Last week we touched down in Denver and had a great time meeting many new faces.

During our stop in San Francisco, we will be partnering with WeWork to create a similar event. WeWork describes themselves as a “platform for creators” – a description that hits very close to home for The Grommet. At their base, WeWork is a network of 25  global coworking spaces that allow makers, creators, entrepreneurs to produce their best work in the company of a like-minded membership that is 15,000 strong and growing. WeWork was a sponsor for our 2014 Product Pitch at Fenway Park, so we are fans of the Boston team and are looking forward to better getting to know the San Francisco WeWorkers.

The doors will open at 6:30 for a casual evening of networking and collaboration. Ray Hallare, The Grommet Director of Operations, and I will be there to meet our Makers, greet our new Retailers, and welcome WeWork’s members along with our own supporters. This is a great opportunity to celebrate a big year or gain inspiration as we round the corner toward 2015, so if you’re in the area please stop by.

    JOIN US: November 5th at 6:30 - 9:00 PM

WeWork SOMA156 Second Street San FranciscoCA 94105

This event is open to all, we can't wait to meet you!

    Please RSVP here.

Can't make it? No problem. Join The Grommet Community Meetup Group to keep in touch with your local Grommet community.
