  • A Custom Designed Grommet: From Idea to Finished Product

On Wednesday, May 28th, The Grommet launched OoO Tie, modern bow ties with quirky, unique designs. These ties were created by two friends in Boston who wanted to show off their intellectual sides while adding some flair and creativity to their sense of style.

Since these tie designs brought out the inventive side in our community, we decided to hold a fun contest where the founders asked what type of designs our supporters wanted to see created. Ideas ranged from nautical themes to fish and robots. It wasn't an easy decision, but the founders chose a winning design and have spent the last few months turning it into a real life bow tie. Angela Matusik, an archeologist from Orlando, Florida thought it would be cool to see petroglyphs on a bow tie and the founders loved the idea.

  • Updates from The Showroom Floor At NY NOW

We recently attended  NY NOW™  where we set up our  Wholesale Exhibit and  brought along several of our Makers  to showcase their products, giving Retailers an opportunity to learn about them directly from the Makers themselves.

The show saw over 3,500 visitors in just the first day and our exhibit was in constant motion with Makers and Retailers connecting over the new and innovative products lining our shelves. We're we so excited to meet so many Main Street Retailers. Our favorite interaction of the day just might be when speaking to one Retailer, she told us: "It's like fate that we just met you. Your products are exactly what I'm looking for."

It's a great feeling connecting Retailers with our Makers and the grins on our Makers faces speak volumes. They are enjoyed the show just as much as we did.

  • Now Launching: Sustainable Businesses in the USA

Here at The Grommet, our MO is to support up-and-coming entrepreneurs and new to market products. But we aren’t the only ones on a mission to help Makers.

Shannon Whitehead is the Founder of Factory45, a new accelerator program that gives independent makers the resources to start sustainable businesses in the USA.

I was lucky enough to interview Shannon and learn more about this new initiative, what she see’s in the Maker landscape and why she felt compelled to start Factory45.

startup accelerator - Made in the USA

What is your background? How did you get into being a sustainable clothing consultant?

In 2010 I co-founded {r}evolution apparel, a sustainable clothing company for female travelers and minimalists. We launched a Kickstarter campaign at the end of 2011 for our signature piece, the Versalette, one garment that can be worn over 20 different ways. We became the highest-funded fashion project in Kickstarter history at that time and were featured in The New York Times, Forbes.com, WSJ.com and Yahoo! News.

In the beginning of 2013, I started a small consulting company to help other designers and sustainable apparel brands launch and grow their own businesses. Realizing that I most enjoy working with startups, I launched an accelerator program at the beginning of April called Factory45. Starting on June 2nd, I’ll be working with 10 people, for six months, to launch sustainable businesses in the USA. (Applications are open now until April 28, 2014.)
