Smarter Sunscreen

Roll on your sunscreen. It’s better than slathering or spraying—and keeps sticky, greasy hands to a minimum. BlokRok applies with an innovative roller that gives better, even coverage and leaves you with less mess. Fill the bottle with your favorite sunscreen or lotion, lock the top, and roll it on. Or use an existing sunblock bottle with the Bottle Rok-It topper, which features the same rolling applicator and fits right onto certain bottles and tubes. This new way to apply sunscreen was prompted by concern about skin cancer. After Arianna Megaro’s family member was diagnosed, she realized that most people skip the sunscreen because it’s so messy and cumbersome. After two years of prototyping and working with design and fluidic engineers, Arianna introduced BlokRok. We found it works best with lotions and sunscreens that aren’t extra thick, so they can glide easily through the roller. Sunscreen is always a good idea, and with BlokRok you’ll have even fewer excuses to forego it.

What benefit does this type of lotion application provide over traditional application?

  • Arianna

The main problem with sunscreen is people don't use it often enough, mainly because they're discouraged by the need to get their hands messy. When they do use sunscreen, they have little control and this leads to too thin or uneven application. Many use sprays to address these issues, but sprays have their own problems such as messy and wasteful overspray, difficulty in getting an even thick application, and much higher cost than bottled lotions. On top of this, sprays are flammable, stick the eyes, and are under investigation by the FDA and Consumer Reports for potential inhalation risks.

BlokRok applicators were designed to specifically address all the problems with conventional bottled and spray lotions. First, they let you keep your hands clean – low mess means people are more willing to use, and reuse, their protective lotion. Just about everyone needs clean hands outside, to handle sports gear, tools, drive a car, work a smart phone, etc. Second, BlokRok applicators provide a uniform coating of the skin without rubbing - this is completely consistent with most research that shows you should coat lotion in a thick uniform layer and let it dry to form a protective "shell". Rubbing lotion in, the only option for hand application, reduces sunscreen effectiveness by as much as 1/2. Finally, and maybe most importantly, BlokRok applicators are fun to use - you feel like you are doing a good job and this means you will likely apply, and reapply, needed protection. So, the greatest benefit over traditional application is that you will be encouraged to cover up, and more frequently, and when you do, you will be putting a uniform and properly applied coating.

Where did the idea for BlokRok come from?

  • Arianna
    Arianna – Special Guest
    3/25/2016 3:10 PM

My inspiration for BlokRok happened in college when a close relative got skin cancer. He knows he got burned too often because he hated putting on sunscreen – which he used, but not often or carefully enough. I was being neglectful in the same thing and that really worried me. I researched sunscreen use and learned some amazing facts; 220M people in the U.S. use sunscreen and 150 million of them do it wrong – just like me and my relative. What was really scary, is that 1 in 5 of us will end up with skin cancer – mainly from overexposure to the sun. Incredibly, this cancer rate in Australia is 6 in 10!

A great study by Consumer Reports showed most people really dislike putting on sunscreen and the mess of doing so. This was the problem to fix in order to increase sunscreen use. The “Aha” moment was when I realized an applicator had to be fun – forget economical, environmental, and effective – these were givens, but putting on sunscreen had to be a positive experience to tap into the power that will make the biggest difference in fighting skin disease – individuals motivated to better protect themselves. My design team and I started from scratch with one main goal: an applicator that applied lotion properly that people enjoyed using, one that belonged everywhere people go outdoors - on the beach, golf course, hiking trail, tennis court - everywhere clean hands and sun protection are essential.

What has been the response from users?

  • Arianna
    Arianna – Special Guest
    3/25/2016 3:12 PM

Very positive and really overwhelming. It turns out that sunscreen is a very emotional subject for many different groups of people. Moms are thrilled to avoid the dangers and mess of spray sunscreens and the drudgery of putting lotion on kids. Golfers get apoplectic about how greasy hands on a club is a total psych-out. Rock climbers shriek at the suggestion of spray because they damage ropes and gear. Fishermen are superstitious about transferring scents from their hands to their lures. Most Sailers forbid sprays on their boats because of the slipping risk of overspray. I heard from a former professional baseball player who was recently diagnosed with skin cancer and claims to be a “Bottle Rok-it customer for life”.

The responses from users were also the inspiration for The Bottle Rok-It. Many wanted the convenience of a simple applicator that they can use immediately or use in travel with smaller tubes of sunscreen. Other BlokRok variations are in the works based on user input and I am excited to get these developed. I suppose that the positive response from so many is what got me through the development obstacles – many people had strong expectations for me to get them a better sunscreen applicator and they barraged me for status reports on product development.

@Mike thank you for adding the organics to the list. Well, thank you for the list, period! You guys took a lot of time to figure out which bottles fit and which bottles don't! :) The organics are safer for our skin. Sunscreen manufacturers actually add carcinogens to some of the sunblock lotions, increasing the risk for skin cancer. So, I've added a website below to help consumers choose the safer ones if they are interested. We all have our favorites I know. Thanks for highlighting the BlockRok!

Hi @Marc! It does not-- Lotion tends to dry in a thin clear film on the roller that can be easily wiped off before the next use. However, if you have a bit too much leftover lotion on the roller, or get dirt on it, you can wipe it on a towel or stick it under the faucet for a quick clean!

Hi, Arianna, I love this concept. Using sunscreen is a very important part of keeping healthy when we're out in the sun. I would like to mention that it's wise to use sunscreen that has no carcinogens in them as so many do, which negates the purpose of putting on sunscreen. They can actually increase your risk for skin cancer. The Environmental Working Group (EWG.org) has a list of the safest sunscreens. @margaret You can absolutely use this lotion in a BlokRok applicator. It depends on which bottle type of the Quench lotion you are using, some have smaller thread sizes than the Bottle Rok-It while some (like the 20.2 Fl Oz bottle size) will work.

Would this work with insect repellent that comes in similar containers? I've traveled several times in the tropics (Africa and South America) and had to use serious insect repellent (with DEET) to avoid insect bites; many brands come in tubes similar to the sizes compatible with this product. Putting that stuff on is worrisome. It would be great to have a better application system.

  • Arianna

@Candyce it should! if it's a lotion based insect repellent than it will work great in BlokRok, and if it's in a threaded bottle that is compatible with the Bottle Rok-It, they will work great together as well. Thanks for your question!

  • Steven

I get that the bottle top applicator works by squeezing the lotion bottle. But I can't tell if the applicator that you fill has to be squeezed. I'm a golfer, and I want the one that fit's best into my golf bag - which one do you recommend?

  • Arianna
    Arianna – Special Guest
    3/28/2016 2:56 PM

@Steven No need to squeeze. The BlokRok has a newly invented elastomeric pump that connects directly with the roller applicator. When you press the roller against your skin, the pump is activated. The more you push, the more lotion that is delivered. You can still roll without pumping, just don’t push. This pump was the most challenging part of designing BlokRok, it makes the application process very smooth and it works even upside down!

The Bottle Rok-It fits great on several popular 2 and 3 oz lotion containers, like Coppertone Sport. These should fit in your golf bag just fine. Of course, the BlokRok applicator is compact, so it will fit as well. Your choice. Hope these help your game!

BlokRok

Roll-on Lotion Applicator

Smarter Sunscreen

Roll on your sunscreen. It’s better than slathering or spraying—and keeps sticky, greasy hands to a minimum.

BlokRok applies with an innovative roller that gives better, even coverage and leaves you with less mess. Fill the bottle with your favorite sunscreen or lotion, lock the top, and roll it on. Or use an existing sunblock
bottle with the Bottle Rok-It topper, which features the same rolling applicator and fits right onto certain bottles and tubes.

I've traveled several times in the tropics (Africa and South America) and had to use serious insect repellent (with DEET) to avoid insect bites; many brands come in tubes similar to the sizes compatible with this product. Putting that stuff on is worrisome. It would be great to have a better application system.

@Candyce it should! if it's a lotion based insect repellent than it will work great in BlokRok, and if it's in a threaded bottle that is compatible with the Bottle Rok-It, they will work great together as well. Thanks for your question!

I get that the bottle top applicator works by squeezing the lotion bottle. But I can't tell if the applicator that you fill has to be squeezed. I'm a golfer, and I want the one that fit's best into my golf bag - which one do you recommend?

Arianna...Completely brilliant!! Thank you for this product. I live in Florida and I have a family that I have the hardest time getting to use sunscreen. I think your product just might be the answer - solves all of their complaints! Wish me luck....:D
