Legwear Reinvented

What happens when a well-dressed Disney executive is traveling for business and removes her boots in the airport security line, only to reveal that she's wearing her dad's athletic socks beneath? If it's Shelby Mason, she turns her fashion disgrace into a booming business. Her invention, called Bootights, combines socks and tights in a single garment. Many of us wear socks over our tights, under our boots, in the winter. We wear the socks for warmth, and also to protect the tights from getting snagged on the boot zipper. But the tights/sock combo is a tricky one, because the wrong socks will slide down, leaving your tights unprotected and your feet uncomfortable. And let's not even mention the sweat factor with two kinds of foot coverings inside a boot. Bootights are the why-didn't-I-think-of-that solution: High-quality, supportive, fashionable tights that lead down to moisture-wicking, contoured, ultra-cushioned socks. It's the look you want up top and the comfort you want inside your boots. Choose from different tights and sock heights to work with your look. No sweating, no sagging socks, no snags! Winter will be here before you know it, and thanks to one woman's long-ago airport embarrassment, you'll be ready in style.

I’m thrilled the Daily Grommet has invited me to share my story and my product, Bootights® with all of you. You see, I was a boot lovin’ gal with a problem – I was forced to layer a sock over my tights when I wore boots for extra comfort and warmth. My feet would slip in my boots with the thin tights causing blisters, snags and runs. Furthermore, my feet would sweat and then freeze so I would be forced to scrounge around my boyfriend's or Dad’s drawer (in my earlier days) for a pair of “man socks” that would work with my boots. It was an inconvenience and never quite did the job.

One cold winter day, I was humiliated when I took off my boots and exposed ugly, white tube socks when going through airport security. It was when my “dirty little secret” became public that inspired me to think of a better way. Why shouldn’t we be both comfortable and stylish in our boots? Why do we have to sacrifice function for fashion? By the time the plane landed, the idea for Bootights® was born. Bootights® are a premium tight attached to a moisture-wicking performance sock at the ankle or mid-calf so you can finally be both stylish and comfortable in your boots all day long.

Oprah called them “revolutionary” and I want all the Daily Grommet gals to find out why. I’m here to answer any questions you have today. Go on and ask, let’s have some fun.

I LOVE this product! They fit like a dream, last forever, and wash up great. And just a little f.y.i. for the slightly chubbier gals, I weigh 210 and wear the largest size with ease. Did you see the black with the burgandy pin stripe up the back???? AWESOME!!!

@Danielle Walsh: Thanks Danielle, I love the back seam too. I designed it because it seems most back seams are sheer and too sexy to wear to work or during the day. This back seam is subtle on a semi-opaque tight so you can wear it to work or anywhere and you still have a sexy element that can take you into evening without exposing too much leg.

@Danielle Walsh: Hmm. Sounds good, Danielle. How tall are you? I am vertically challenged at 5'4". Whenever I've done that which you describe, I've found that the waist bands usually present additional proportional challenges, reaching ever heaven-ward, settling somewhere on or around the eyebrows, then rolling down. GRRRR. The only hose I ever found without that problem was a pair of DKNYs in the years prior to SPANX. Fiber technology has morphed, grown and improved however I think it's going to take those additional sizes to make this a true winner for those of us who are amply proportioned 'petites.' Care to comment, Shelby? BTW - I should mention that I think your size 11s are up to running with AND competing with the big boys. Don't ever let them think you aren't "up to it," because you obviously are a competitive and innovative spirit. THAT also can be attributed to those big doggies. YOWZA!

@Deborah Zee: Hosiery sizing is tough, I learned this by taking Hosiery 101 at the Hosiery Tech Center in NC (believe it or not). You have to not try to stretch yourself too thin (no pun intended) because if you try to fit a really wide range of people with each size, then nobody is really comfortable. It is a difficult balance and that is why so many brands fail. This is another reason why I am proud to have Bootights made in the USA; I can control the sizing, quality much better this way.

@Jaymee: Hi Jaymee, yes, the cable knit has a mid-calf sock attached so that your legs are toasty warm too. Also, the mid-calf sock decreases zipper induced snags and runs. I used to get snags in my tights from the zippers in my boots and now, this problem is virtually eliminated. Bootights last so much longer than regular tights, another added bonus.

Great question, Jen!! They officially fit up to size 10 1/2 (which is a standard sock size) but I have size 11 feet also and they fit great. You should have no problem. My sister has very wide feet but not as long as mine and she says they fit her feet with no problems either. My Dad always told me with big feet comes good understanding so keep that in mind. Ha!

@Exyorkgirl: Actually, Bootights are now light control which offers a comfortable and support control top, not too mention the tight itself is an “every course” knit which means it is higher quality than the average tight and results in all-over support. I have curves and I like to make sure they stay in place without feeling or looking like a sausage. Bootights do the trick.

Are the tights, from the sock up, the same color/material? Some tights have a different fabric from the thigh up that is usually a darker color. What about yours?

  • Shelby

@marcia: Great question. They are the same color all the way up, except the flannel grey pinstripe and argyle which turn black at the panty since they are patterns. Usually tights that have super control often include thigh control so they have the black color or darker color that comes down lower for additional reinforcement. Our tights have all-over light control so they are a consistent color all the way to the waist.
