This innovative, coiled beeswax candle used to be known as a “courting candle.” Back in the 1600’s, protective parents used coiled candles to limit the amount of time prospective suitors could spend with their daughters. We did away with the outdated ritual, but kept the beautiful design. The cotton wick burns 20 minutes per every inch that you pull through the clip. You set the time, and then it’ll actually go out by itself.

Need to be mindful of shipping in warm weather

6/7/2018 by sharps84

I purchased two candles, one for daughter and one for myself. They arrived several weeks ago which was already warm weather here in Georgia. When I opened them, the candle hadn't melted, but it had gotten soft enough that it stuck to itself and was difficult to unroll. This caused the edges of the candle to be rough where it was pulled apart. Also, one of the legs on the tray is about 1/2" shorter than the other three so it won't sit level on a table. I really like the candles, they are unique and the sort of thing that I'm drawn to. Sad that they have issues. Advise to watch warm temperatures while shipping and do better quality control to catch issues like the leg too short. Disappointed, this looked like a great gift for all sorts of occasions.More > < Less

Like it but ...

Candle is difficult to unwind and thread through the holder without bending and distorting the wax. May try greasing the inside of the holder so it's easier to slide the wax through.More > < Less

Great look; less than great to use

I bought the horizontal version. It looks great on my mantle, but the coiled candle is hard to unspool--fear of cracking the wax--and the candle gets stuck in the clamp. Beeswax candles are somewhat sticky, so this may be unavoidable.More > < Less

Hard to use!

I originally bought this unique candle as a gift, however, changed my mind and glad I did. Feeding the wax is difficult and, as others have stated, it does not burn very long. Once it is cooled it is hard to free the wax ring and feed it through the opening. Love the look and uniqueness, but it fails at being useful.More > < Less

Still having trouble getting it to light

Second night that I am frustrated because candle just won't light. This time even with my Bic lighter I cannot get the wick to ignite.

About Candle by the Hour

“Self-Timed” Beeswax Candles

This coiled beeswax candle lets you set how long it burns. The wick burns 20 minutes per every inch that you pull through the clip, then it’ll put itself out. Its beeswax and cotton wick is eco-friendly, too.

The design was part of the 1600s dating scene. Known as a “courting candle”, protective parents would light one to limit the time prospective suitors could spend with their daughters.

Our culture did away with the outdated ritual, but Candles by the Hour kept the beautiful, self-extinguishing design.
