This innovative, coiled beeswax candle used to be known as a “courting candle.” Back in the 1600’s, protective parents used coiled candles to limit the amount of time prospective suitors could spend with their daughters. We did away with the outdated ritual, but kept the beautiful design. The cotton wick burns 20 minutes per every inch that you pull through the clip. You set the time, and then it’ll actually go out by itself.

  • Materials: Beeswax candle, cotton wick, metal base
  • Care: Trim wax in between use, wipe dust with damp rag when not in use

Save your money

This candle is extremely disappointing. The self extinguish feature works but then it is impossible to relight without melting alot of wax out of the way. The candle does not unwind without breaking. So you end up with these 1 1/2" pieces of crooked candle sticking up through the holder. The wick keeps them attached but they are very crooked. Because this happens the melting wax goes everywhere. The exposed candle does not stand up straight. This candle looked really cool but it has let me down. I am not happy with it at all. I would never buy this thing again. Cool idea bit bad execution.More > < Less

Clip is difficult to engage...candle burns far shorter than advertised. I would not recommend this...

Not as easy as it looks

The clamp is really tight with a hole that's a bit too small for the candle provided. This all but guarantees that the candle gets mangled whenever you extend it. It looks nothing like the pretty picture by the time you get the candle through the clamp - dings, dents, scrapes in the wax all over. Then, the first burn went well and the candle extinguished itself as designed. Unfortunately, the wick burned down so low that it would not light for the second burn. about every other time we use the candle I have to carve away the wax to expose enough wick for a good burn. Otherwise, the wick drowns in the wax. Overall, a big disappointment.More > < Less

It Won't Feed

12/28/2018 by Alan

I bought one of these earlier in the year. I thought it a clever idea and an attractive design. But after a week of trying to use it, I gave up. The wax coil was too stiff, and it wouldn't unwind smoothly to feed through the 'holder' I don't know if you're supposed to put it in the oven a while before adding burnable length. but if so, that's a deal-breaker for me.

Regrettably, I cannot recommend this product.

About Candle by the Hour

“Self-Timed” Beeswax Candles

This coiled beeswax candle lets you set how long it burns. The wick burns 20 minutes per every inch that you pull through the clip, then it’ll put itself out. Its beeswax and cotton wick is eco-friendly, too.

The design was part of the 1600s dating scene. Known as a “courting candle”, protective parents would light one to limit the time prospective suitors could spend with their daughters.

Our culture did away with the outdated ritual, but Candles by the Hour kept the beautiful, self-extinguishing design.
