Bound & Organized

Industrial designers James Caldwell and John Paulick set out to redesign the traditional clipboard, but what they invented is more than just a modern take on an old standby. A cross between a notepad, binder, folder, and yes, a clipboard, ClipBook keeps note paper, clippings, recipes, and other loose items organized using traditional bookbinding techniques and a strong magnetic hinge capable of holding up to 30 sheets of paper. There’s no bulky metal clip to pinch on this sleek, stackable solution that sticks to any magnetic surface and fits neatly in your laptop case or book bag. Unlike clipboards, ClipBook features a water-resistant cover for protection and privacy. Both the cover and its contents can be flipped no problem. Handcrafted in Philadelphia, ClipBook uses the age-old craft of bookbinding to create a current day organizer with contemporary aesthetic appeal.

    Hi Grommeters!

    We're excited to be featured on the The Grommet! We are designers and creators of the ClipBook™. Designed and Handcrafted in the USA, ClipBook™ was created to improve the function and aesthetics of the traditional clipboard. This product breathes new life into the dying industry of bookbinding. With today's digital age, bookbinding has become a lost art. ClipBook™ repurposes the same process and materials that are used in making books, to create functional stylish magnetic clipboards. ClipBook™ is durable, ultra slim, and flips naturally like a notepad. It's new, yet so familiar.

    @Judith Good question. No, according to our magnet supplier. We asked, and since most of today's devices use solid state hard drives and flash memory, they are not affected by magnets. Even older devices that use traditional disk drives are not usually affected unless in rare occasions if the magnet is much stronger than our's and is put directly up to the hard drive. That said, it's still good practice to not place ClipBook directly onto your laptop, electronic device or credit card.

    Thanks for your interest in ClipBook!

    We understand that you could get a traditional clipboard for a cheaper price, However we believe in quality design and materials. Much of the cost is attributed to the Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets we use. Unfortunately quality handcrafted items made in the USA come with a higher price tag to produce, but we believe the quality and innovation is worth every penny!

    Unfortunately, "[price] is a bit much" can be said about most of thegrommet.com's offerings. I purchased one item...not a bad product but I declined to review it because the price point was way off. I'm not sure if most of the products here are exclusive but was able to find another product that the Grommet offers for half the price elsewhere online. Shop around. You never know...

    @Linda: Wow, I see this product hits a nerve for you somehow?

    But Apple's I-pad cover is not made with book binding techniques and is certainly not made in the USA, or by American entrepreneurs. I don't know much about magnets but I do know it is way more difficult than anyone realizes to make a product here and turn enough profit to keep it made here. I applaud these guys for their efforts, and wish them much success with a nifty product.

    @James: Perhaps if the site you purchase your cheaper items from had to pay for the kind of advertising and support that Grommet provides to products and their makers that they showcase, their prices wouldn't be so cheap after all. I've used coupon codes and free shipping offers for the many Grommets I've purchased and have yet to be disappointed.

    @Jennifer

    Thank you! The slim design of ClipBook is beneficial when you are on the go as well. You can throw it in your travel bag and it doesn't take up much room, while keeping your documents safe with it's cover.

    ClipBook is intended to hold loose papers. Depending on the thickness of the notepad sometimes the cardboard is to thick, which doesn't allow the magnets of the ClipBook to hold the notebook properly. We have had users that have removed the cardboard from the back of the notepad to help secure it properly in the ClipBook.

    I love the look and functionality of the clipboard. I have many clipboards and would be interested in buying at least one, even at this kind of high price. However, the deal breaker is the color. It is very attractive, but not green, not for me. I would want to show it off and have it out where people could ooh and aah over it. That means it needs to be for me a glossy white, or gun metal gray or silver. A glossy black would probably also be a great seller, in my opinion. Hopefully enough people will like the green to allow for future added color offerings.

    Fabulous design, applauding you from afar! I also want to add that I COMPLETELY APPRECIATE YOUR PRICING! I get it! You've designed, created and manufactured an item from scratch in what I would imagine extremely tight quantities right here in the USA! Americans NEED to support "made in the USA products" by appreciating the expense it takes to bring the items to market. If you like it, buy it. Stop challenging the very people who are trying so hard to bring America back to what it was. Yes, I'm going to grab me a green clipboard! Best of luck guys.

    Thanks for the wonderful feedback. The ClipBook also comes in Charcoal Gray, Dove Gray, Navy Blue, and Lime Green. The Charcoal Gray is very similar to a gun metal gray.

    @Jimmy John Design I love this idea but couldn't find (or missed) where it says what this is made of? What is inside the plastic binding? Thanks!

    @Jennifer

    Thanks for the comment Jennifer! ClipBook does not consist of any plastic. It is made from quality book linen and book board. ClipBook is made with the same material and processes as hardcover books.

    Does it come in other sizes? Looking for one that is about half that big?

    For now, ClipBook is only offered in our 9"x12" size, however we will be offering multiple sizes in the future. Thanks Rosemary

    Being such a concrete thinker, I am amazed when I see a design like this that is so simple that it looks like it was easy to dream up. But obviously it wasn't or it would have already been created! Congratulations to you!

    This looks awesome but it is way too costly. If it were half the price, i would buy it just as on an impulse. Anything over $15 has to be really considered. Sorry, but can you consider lowering your price point?

    Hi Linda,

    Amy from The Grommet team here. As you'll see above, several people have mentioned this as a concern. The founders of ClipBook have made superior design and quality their priority and it's made in the U.S. You'll see their answer just above.

    @Linda

    @Cynthia: Right on! Grommets made in USA - comments cry expense, Grommets made cheaply out-of-country - comments cry not made in USA. It's a much more complex issue than most folks understand, but you obviously do understand, thanks for speaking for those of us who completely agree with you. And ditto, "Best of luck guys"!

    You have some great products. One thing I've noticed on the comments for various products of yours are concerning the prices. Seems to me everyone wants products made in the USA which is great.but don't want to pay the price for it.

    I'm definitely getting one to try out. I LOVE that it's made in the USA and the craftsmanship associated with this. (I guess I will test out the craftsmanship but can always return it if it doesn't hold true.)

    I agree with some of the comments here that if we can all make an effort to buy American made, that helps our workers, companies, and general economy.

    Love it and will buy it.

    Hi Fran,

    At the moment, The Grommet is selling ClipBook in gray, charcoal, lime and navy. I'm sure people would love to see pink, purple and red in the future and the founders will for sure take this into consideration for their next line. Stay tuned!

    Although this product isn't for me, I am glad to see another Made in America product offered. It seems like Grommet can't win . . . If a product is made in China, people complain and if it's made in the US (and more expensive), people complain. Oy!
