@Rick Sorry to hear your outlets are "sideways" Some builders choose this orientation for various reasons. As far as we know it isn't a new standard. • Tom

    6/29/2016 3:17 PM

@Emily Let me explain. The thingCHARGER provides a charging "dock" for your phone, e-reader, iPod or tablet on the top of the unit via the interchangeable tips. Your device rests nicely on top of the thingCHARGER as it is charged. This design requires that the thingCHARGER unit is vertical so your device is held in place. The AC outlets and 2 USB ports would still be available when plugged into a horizontal outlet but not the charging tip. To use the charging tip on the top of the product you will need a standard vertical AC outlet. I hope that helped!

Hello. I have an iPhone 4 with a charging outlet that is approx one inch wide. Will this fit on the top charging post? Jane

@Jane Great question. This is what we call a "30 pin tip". While a 30 pin tip is not included with the thingCHARGER there is an offer included with the unit to get the exact tip that you need for your iPhone 4.

Does the thingCHARGER come in black? I want to place this in my kitchen but all of my outlets are black.

@Deborah thingCHARGER comes in a beautiful glossy white finish as seen in the photos. It actually looks better than photos can capture. thingCHARGER is not available in other colors at this time. Thanks for your feedback. We always factor in consumer feedback when planning future products.

I pre-purchased 6 of these when they were still in the development stage and patiently waited.

I was so excited when they arrived!

The design is really perfect. I can charge my iPhone and still use the outlet. I gave some to my kids also, they love them. The workmanship is first class, the packaging is, well, just like Apple products. Buy more than one!

@Tom I asked about the charger adapting to my older iPhone which has a wide charging plug. The same is true for my iPad. Will one tip accommodate both my phone and my iPad (not at the same time, of course). Jane

@Jane Yes! The 30 pin tip works on older iPhones and older iPads.
