    The idea of a smart garden started to sprout after Mattias, the CEO of Click & Grow, read a NASA report on how people grow plants in space. At first, this was just a piece of useful and interesting trivia for him. However, things took a turn in 2009 when Mattias went through another research paper that stated that every year billions of dollars worth of plants are thrown away because people don’t know how to take care of them properly.

    The idea of Click & Grow was born. After research and testing, the first Click & Grow smart garden got made that used biomimicry as the main source of inspiration. The backbone of Click & Grows smart gardens is the nano technological growth medium - the smart soil. It contains pockets for oxygen even when it is wet and supplies plants with an optimal amount of nutrients.

    @Krete I'm "fed up" with frankenfood, gmo's, pesticides, toxic chemicals in food, especially since big food suppliers can keep this information hidden from us. It's a violation of our civil rights not to be able to decide for ourselves what to eat. I would want to know all the ingredients in your smart soil before I buy it. What is in your smart soil? Hi Loraine, you will not have such a problem with Click & Grow. They use minerals found in organic fertilizers, but there are no pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, GMOs, or plant hormones

    @Loraine

    Hello Loraine:)

    Thank you for the comment!

    I hope you understand when I say that the exact soil components are a company secret. But overall, the soil contains some coconut fibers, dirt and nutrients/minerals, that are harmless. There are no pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, plant hormones or any other suspicious substances in our products.

    We do use additional minerals to feed the plant. So in most countries it cannot be certified as organic. But be assured - all used mineral salts are chemically the same as in all organic fertilizers. Our fertilizer programs are scientifically tested and produce plants that are completely safe and healthy to eat.

    We wanted to keep it simple and carefree, yet make it look nice and, of course, of great quality. We definitely feel like people shouldn’t lose their bond or connection with nature even though they lead busy and intense lives. This was definitely one of the driving forces behind the initial product as well. Everyone can and should be a gardener is what we think! With our products, everyone really can enjoy freshness and green surroundings in their home. Even if they don’t have time to invest in making sure the plants have everything they need at all times- that is what our smart gardens are for.

    I feel it is a good confidence builder for budding green thumbs. The smart garden makes it super-easy to grow herbs and edibles even in the most urban environments. This means that you can actually grow your favorite plants on your windowsill in an apartment, leave for a week or two, come back and have the plant be alive and happy. Also it’s the best introductory product to developing a green thumb eventually. We encourage people to replant their plants once they outgrow the Smart Herb Garden if they wish to do so.

  • Krete
    Krete – Special Guest
    11/16/2015 10:15 AM

    @Guest Hi there! You are welcome to grow different herbs in the Smart Herb Garden at the same time. Our Starter Kit comes with 3 basil refills, but you could also buy some extra refill 3-packs with thyme and chili pepper. Just put in your 3 different refills at the same time and enjoy growing your own herbs.

    There is also no need to worry that the extra refills will be wasted. The refills can be stored for about two years in the dark, in dry conditions and on normal room temperature. It is always good to have some variety and spare refills in hand.

  • Linda
    Linda
    11/16/2015 12:58 PM

    @Krete Right. But the point earlier was the ability to have variety from the start. With a base price of $59 including 3 of one herb, to add two other plant types you have to spend yet another $38. While I like the basic concept, for someone who really likes a variety of fresh produce this seems exorbitantly expensive. I hope you rectify that and start to offer a variety pack.

    Hi Linda, thanks for the comment. I don't think you are going to meet any argument here. As Krete mentioned below, Click and Grow is always looking at feedback when deciding next steps and you are not alone in wanting a variety pack. It sounds like that is a strong possibility for the future!

    @Linda Hi Linda! Thank you for the comment and a great suggestion!

    Launching one or more variety packs is definitely something we have to discuss and I am so happy to see more than one suggestion about this already.

    I completely agree that having to spend extra money for bigger herb variety is not the best solution and variety packs would help to avoid some unwanted spending.

    Hoping to give you some good news soon!

    I saw the picture for the mini tomato's - looks like once the tomato's pass the infancy stage and has to be replanted in a larger pot you lose all the benefits of the smart herb starter kit . You no longer have the light source, monitoring system, and will have to add regular soil? Is this the case?

  • Krete
    Krete – Special Guest
    11/16/2015 10:48 AM

    @LAuren

    Hi Lauren! The mini-tomato plant can easily grow to full size in our Smart Herb Garden and does not need to be replanted. This is why we have made sure that the Smart Soil has enough nutrients for a year and the led light is adjustable. Once your plant grows bigger you can just lift up the light arm and fix it to the next position.

    It usually takes 3-6 months for the mini-tomato to fully grow in the Smart Herb Garden. Replanting is always an option if you think the plant could use some more space. It could also expand the life cycle of your plant.However, replanting would also mean that the plant would no longer have the light source, monitoring system and would need some regular soil once you plant it in a bigger pot.

    You are right, the benefits of out Smart Herb Garden would be lost with replanting, but the mini-tomato would still grow fine as long as the plant gets enough natural light and you water it regularly.

    Hello Sandy!

    Basil is the most popular herb and grows very fast. This is mainly why we decided to have 3 basil refills in our Starter Kit. If you would like to mix and match then there is always an option to order some extra refill 3-packs and plant different herbs at the same time. Many of our customers have actually used this option.

    Thank you for the feedback as well! We definitely consider a sample pack with 3 different herbs. I agree that it would be great to get some variety :)

    @Robert

    Hi Robert :)

    Thank you for these questions!

    The heart of our Smart Herb Garden is definitely the Smart Soil. It makes our product stand out from other other similar products such as Aero Garden LED unit. Smart Soil is developed to balance oxygen, water and nutritional ingredients at an optimal level ad has special oxygen pockets that provide the plants with nutrients and enough oxygen even when the soil is wet.

    The light of the Smart Herb Garden works on 120-240v. Our light is also adjustable and has 3 positions. Once you fix the light in the highest position it will be 22 cm (8.6 in) from the lid (refill is placed on the same level). Our light will offer the plants all the specific light spectra they need.

  • Krete

    11/16/2015 12:04 PM

    @Richard

    Hello Richard!

    All the herbs can be replanted and you are welcome to transplant them outdoors during the summer. Natural sunlight will be great for the herbs! You would just need to take out the soil from this plastic refill, add some extra regular soil and make sure to water the plants regularly to keep them healthy.

    You are also welcome to place the whole Smart Herb Garden outdoors and keep the herbs growing inside the unit. In this case I would recommend to remove the light arm as your herbs will get plenty of sunlight outside. This way there is no need for the extra LED light :)

    Hi Rose!

    Thank you for the question. Our refills are designed to fit the Smart Herb Garden. I am not sure if they are exactly the same size as Aerogarden seed pod and fit in their unit. Most likely there are some design and size differences and I would not recommend to try our refill as we would not be able to guarantee results with their unit.

    Nevertheless, I hope you will consider trying our Smart Herb Garden as well. Refills fit perfectly and growing fresh herbs couldn't be easier :)

    Hello Chad!

    We are fans of fresh pure food and haven't put anything in our products that is even remotely suspicious.

    There are no pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, plant hormones or any other suspicious substances in our products. And there's no need for them - a well watered and fed plant with perfect growing conditions can defend itself without any outside help. What we have added are some minerals to feed the plant. Although the mineral salts we use are chemically the same as in all organic fertilizers, in most countries it cannot be certified as "organic", but it is definitely natural and safe .

    They do stand flat on their own, basically they are just 3 little pots that you insert in the herb garden. The light has a built-in timer which is set to be bright for 16 hours a day and on a very dim light for 8 hours meaning that it never goes completely off. The lamp starts its 16-hour cycle once you plug it in and can be re-set just by unplugging and re-plugging it. No need to unplug for the night unless the dim light really bothers you.

    Hi Laurie!

    Look no further, you have found us! Our Smart Herb Garden Starter Kit comes with 3 basil refills and seeds are already inside. All you need to do is to set up the system: put in your refills, fill up the water tank and plug in the light. Thats all! If your water tank is getting empty (in 2-3 weeks) then the light will start flashing to let you know it is time to fill up the tank again.

    We also have different refill 3-packs available here at The Grommet. You can choose from mini tomato, thyme, chili pepper and basil.

    This answer is coming at you from Click and Grow...

    Hi Lucy!

    Thank you for the comment. We have tried and tested various hydroponic and aeroponic systems during our research. They are neat and we love the technology. However, using the Click & Grow is much much simpler - no measuring, no programming, switching, calibrating. It just works, and does continue to do so during electricity shortages (a major flaw for hydroponic systems). Also the water quality can be much lower for the Click & Grow SmartSoil.

    If you are looking for an easy-to-use indoor gardening system that can grow you some herbs or flowers then our Smart Herb Garden is just the thing! It lets you grow 3 plants at the time and is designed to take complete care of your plants.

    Our Smart Herb Garden is developed to make the experience of growing herbs as easy as possible for the customers. Click & Grow

Smart Herb Garden Starter Kit

Kitchen Farming

If you love cooking with fresh herbs, Click & Grow will let you grow your own all year long—even if you don’t have a green thumb or space for a garden.

This low-profile herb planter brings “kitchen farming” indoors with no guesswork. Founder Mattias Lepp was committed to using sustainable approaches to planting. He based Click &
Grow on biomimicry—which imitates processes found in nature—and used NASA-inspired technology to guarantee results.

Click & Grow comes with an adjustable light source, a monitoring system, and a new growth medium called SmartSoil. It contains a year’s worth of nutrients, which are distributed evenly along with water and oxygen. Sensors constantly monitor water levels and signal when your herbs need a drink.

With absolutely no guesswork, you’ll have sprouts in just a few days. The Click & Grow herb planter makes the perfect gift for anyone who loves to garden—without any of the work.

    I’m sure many people have wondered how to make gardening foolproof, but how did you make that a reality?

  • Krete

    @Loraine

    11/13/2015 4:50 PM

    We wanted to keep it simple and carefree, yet make it look nice and, of course, of great quality. We definitely feel like people shouldn’t lose their bond or connection with nature even though they lead busy and intense lives. This was definitely one of the driving forces behind the initial product as well. Everyone can and should be a gardener is what we think! With our products, everyone really can enjoy freshness and green surroundings in their home. Even if they don’t have time to invest in making sure the plants have everything they need at all times- that is what our smart gardens are for.

  • Mike

    Why is this something people into gardening or getting into gardening should have?

  • Krete

    11/13/2015 4:52 PM

    I feel it is a good confidence builder for budding green thumbs. The smart garden makes it super-easy to grow herbs and edibles even in the most urban environments. This means that you can actually grow your favorite plants on your windowsill in an apartment, leave for a week or two, come back and have the plant be alive and happy. Also it’s the best introductory product to developing a green thumb eventually. We encourage people to replant their plants once they outgrow the Smart Herb Garden if they wish to do so.

    Krete: I was really hoping to have a variety in this planter. For instance, one basil, one thyme, and one chili pepper all growing at the same time in one planter. IS this possible?

    @LAuren

    @Robert

    @Richard
