Custom Drawer Organizer

You Can Conquer Clutter

Do you have a scary kitchen drawer? One where you’ve been stabbed by a bamboo skewer, strafed by a can opener and pierced by a corkscrew? Now you can put your mind at ease and straighten out that mess with an easy, customizable organizer.

The creator is entrepreneur Keith Nielson, who refused to let clutter take over his drawers, craft and tool areas. His solution is DrawerDecor, a DIY system of modular sheets and dividers that can be trimmed and repositioned to fit your drawers, toolboxes and desktops. Each
16-piece set comes with one nonslip BaseMat made from food-grade silicone. There’s also an assortment of Divitz dividers, which stick to the BaseMat so you can create perfectly sized storage slots for even your most irregularly sized tools and utensils.

Decked out in red, green, blue, orange, or purple, your work area will look and feel like it’s had a mini face-lift. You, too, can conquer clutter and put an end to junk drawer mayhem.

Good Afternoon Daily Grommet fans. Do you every get frustrated and think, "There has to be a better way?" It happens to me all the time and as a serial inventor, I use it as my inspiration to create a solution. My name is Keith M. Nielson and I had that thought with my kitchen utensil drawer. The pre-molded drawer organizers worked for my forks, spoons and knives but there was nothing on the market for all the big spatulas, whisks and gadgets. So, I invented the DrawerDecor, an infinitely customizable, stylish solution to tame all my messy drawers. Does this sound like a solution for you, too? I would love to hear your thoughts and questions.

Do these work well with everyday garage tools, such as screwdrivers and pliers? Thinking this would work well in place of my shadow boards in my garage? and of course Father's Day is this weekend..

@Gary Jurkovich: Thanks for the question Gary. Yes, the drawerdecor works great for any drawer where you want to organize items of different sizes and shapes, especially in tool boxes. I use it in my tool box at home!

Hello! I love the colors on these! I just am wondering how the dividers stay in place? and how many come with this?

@Teraesa: Good question. You can find further details for any Grommet feature under the Grommet's video but above the story on a tab called 'Details'. The 16 piece set includes: (1) 20" X 14" Silicone basemat, (5) long Divitz 3"x1", (5) short Divitz 1.5" X 1", (5) triangles .72"X.72".

@Katherine Klinger: I had to dig around to find it - I really wanted to know the pad dimensions, you might want to feature the 20 X 14 somewhere more readily accessible. This could fill a lot of my needs (so to speak).

@Grumpy Old Man: We agree that we need to find a better way to call attention to the details tab. Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad this product looks like it will work for you!

@Teraesa: The whole system is made out of soft silicone which sticks to itself. This makes the system infinitely customizable. You can put the dividers anywhere on the mat, facing any direction! Thanks for the question!

@joanne Deschenes: Excellent comment! With these divitz you can stack thin utensils. We will be introducing taller divitz next year to maximize this feature and they work with and add value to this set.

Great product! I'm considering ordering two different colors (love the colors!) so that I can mix 'n match the base with the divitz, but first -- can you tell me if the product is washable?

@Margaret: Great idea! Keith did a wonderful job with the color palette so that you can have fun mixing and matching the colors if you choose. Yes, it is completely washable.

I found this example from DrawerDecor of mixing and matching and thought you'd like to see.

@Margaret: The silicone is super easy to clean. It is dishwasher safe. I find that simply rinsing it off or using a cleaning wipe is quicker and easier.

It would be nice if the mat was sold on a roll, so you could custom cut any size needed. Some of my kitchen drawers I would like to use this system for are 24x18 and 22x18.

@Elizabeth Ross: If you look closely you can see that we designed the mat with a grid pattern on the top so you can easily place two mats side by side to fill large drawers and the seam blends into the pattern so you cant even see it!

With new counter tops on the way, I need to move my knives from the magnet under the upper cabinet into a drawer. I don't think I saw any knives in the pictures. Can this system hold knives in minimal space...ie blade standing up not laying down and taking more drawer space? or do you have another invention which could do this?

@Gail: Thanks for the question Gail. The drawerdecor can organize knives. Really, this product is like a lego set, you are only limited by your imagination.:) So, I encourage people to play with the product and discover new solutions.

@Keith M. Nielson: Are the Divitz solid? made of what material? Could one make vertical cuts into them to hold knife blades? How soon do you expect the taller Divitz to be available? Might they be better to slice partially thru vertically to hold a knife? Hey, here's an idea to improve your already GREAT product!! :)

@Gail: Divitz are solid silicone. Taller divitz will be available next spring. Yes, slits in the divitz can hold vertical knives. That is one design that is on the drawing boards. Great minds think alike!

Is there a way of marking the outline of each item so family, friends or visitors know where to put it back?

  • Katherine

    6/30/2011 9:47 PM

@Sue: Great question! I have forwarded it on to Keith and he says that he will have to experiment with a variety of markers...silicone is easy to clean so it is hard to get things to stick. I will let you know if he finds something that works.

This is a brilliant and simple idea, I wish I had thought of it! I have had an invention in my head for 15 years now, but I don't know where I can have a prototype made. I'm not sure I trust the people that advertise for people to submit their inventions, I'm afraid they'll steal my idea. It's an incredible idea that nobody has ever thought of it!

@Pam Davis: If you've had an idea in your head for 15 years, no one else has come out with it, and it's still relevant, you have to get it out of your head and into reality! Start locally with your local Small Business Development office, SCORE counselors, or even a local business person who may be doing something similar because there are many things you need to be considering even before getting your prototype made and they can help you navigate the process. Best of luck to you. We hope to someday be featuring your product as a Grommet!

Great idea, but I have two suggestions: 1. white would be nice.

    2. Have you noticed that the handles are mostly narrower than the business end of a utensil? A mat with a fan shape would make the drawer space much more usable. Would this be possible?

ALMOST the perfect solution for my two "miscellaneous" kitchen utensil drawers, but the mat isn't big enough. The drawers are 18"x17". Is there an option to order an additional mat so I could cut additional pieces for the drawers?
