Light Up, Charge Away

Need some juice? Tap the sun with the eGear 5-in-1 solar travel kit. The base stores energy from the sun, and you can use it to power five different attachments: a small LED flashlight, radio, fan, reading light or USB charger. You just choose the component you want, then slide it onto the body until it clicks into place. It’s great for those times when you’re away from an electrical outlet. If you’re hiking or camping, you can expose the tiny base unit to the sun during the day, then use what you need at night -- flashlight, radio, fan... or maybe a little bit of each. For an everyday backup power supply, you can keep the unit in your car, soaking up the sun on the dashboard. Then if you need a flashlight or your cell phone battery dies, you’ve got power standing by. (The USB charger attachment lets you run personal electronic devices, such as a cell phone, MP3 player or even a digital camera). The creators of the 5-in-1 solar travel kit are Robert Walker and Susan Martin, founders of Essential Gear and avid paddlers, cyclists and hikers. They know firsthand the value of innovative, high-tech outdoor products. Adventure awaits... and you’ve got the energy to enjoy it!

    Can you tell me how long, approximately, it takes to charge the central solar unit? Great idea!

    @Lisa: Thanks! It takes 20 hours to charge by sun. It can also charge by USB and that would take 2-4 hours.

    When will this item be back in stock? I have a best friend leaving in a couple of weeks to begin work with the families of AIDS victims through the Peace Corps in Africa. She's been promised a shack and a pit toilet. This set would go a long way toward easing her transition.

    @Katherine Klinger:

    Thank you. She just showed up here to visit, and she's looking forward to having it. I could go buy it direct, but I'd rather go through Grommet just to support the source. Please let me know soon if that's not going to work so I can order it to arrive before she leaves.

    @Mary: Unfortunately they are moving their warehouse and we don't expect to be back in stock until the end of January.
