3-in-1 Personal Air Cooler

Cool Off

Evapolar is a personal evaporative cooler that combines the portability of a fan with the cooling power of an air conditioner. And it has the moisture-boosting benefits of a humidifier, too.

The built-in water reservoir saturates a basalt filter (made from igneous rock and glass), creating the cool evaporation. A fan helps
circulate that fresh, moist air up to about 45 square feet around you—perfect for a desktop or small room.

Biodegradable basalt is a natural material that filters dust from the air, and it prevents mold and bacteria from growing inside the unit. That makes the cool air cleaner.

Eugene Dubovoy and Vladimir Levitin were looking for a better way to beat the heat at work. They based Evapolar on the same system used in the Russian subway, and gave it a scaled-down, eco-friendly design. You can even charge the device via USB to create the perfect personal climate just about anywhere.

Intriguing device. Can you put some numbers or insight into a couple motes in the description. First, if we are in a humid climate, at what level or range of humidity does it lose effectiveness? Might it work in tandem with a 'central' dehumidifier? And the noise level (given in dB)...what might that compare to? Thanks!

@Jim Thanks so much for the question.

I am very pleased that you are interested in our product. First of all, the cooling efficiency of Evapolar depends on two factors: outdoor temperature and humidity. Evapolar becomes less efficient if humidity is above 70% but it is important to understand that during the hottest days relative humidity naturally goes down. Also indoors light, electronics, and conventional ACs dry air significantly. So even if you are living in a pretty humid country Evapolar should work fine when you need it most.

The working noise level reaches up to 45 dB.

Me again...looks like this runs on battery charged via USB or direct from USB. How long will it run untethered, and could be powered by a USB charger plugged into a wall socket?

    @Cori Ye @Jim

Yes, exactly! You can plug Evapolar into a power bank, USB-port of your car or laptop, a solar battery. The only condition is that the power supply must have the output of 5V and 2A.

The working time depends on a capacity of the power bank. For example, if you use the power bank with the capacity 10000mAh then it will carry for 4 h.

Hello. The AC in my truck broke and the fix is not something I can do anytime in the near future. Would this work well in a car setting?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 10:53 AM

Oh, I'm really sorry about your car AC. Unfortunately, we do not recommend using Evapolar instead of native AC in the car because while driving may cause water leakage. Evapolar should be positioned on a flat horizontal surface. The best way is to use Evapolar to keep your car cool while you are out for couple of hours or in caravans while staying in camp.

  • Michael
    7/13/2017 10:58 AM

@Philipp I read that you might be coming out with a water tight version and a bigger reservoir? Do you have any idea if/when this is happening? I appreciate your quick feedback by the way.

@Michael You're right! Recently we announced a new version - Evapolar 2. There is more water reservoir, working time, etc. Follow the news on our website!

  • Rhonda
    7/13/2017 10:46 AM

How easy is the water reservoir to clean? Does the top come off completely or is there just a small opening to fill it?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 11:07 AM

@Rhonda The water tank is easy to clean. Actually, it does not require special care. Secondly, there's a very comfortable lid. Lid size of the water tank is 146x22mm.

  • Donde
    7/13/2017 10:50 AM

How long (use in hours) before you need to replace the cartridge?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 11:09 AM

@Donde Thank you for your question! Evapolar evaporative cartridge needs to be replaced approximately once in 6 months.

My son is in a college dorm that has no air. They don't allow traditional a/c units. Will this cool a room that is about 14 x 14 sufficiently or any better than a traditional box fan?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 11:17 AM

Evapolar was designed as a personal unit. It works as a cooler, humidifier, and purifies the air. Thus its main feature is creating your local area of comfort instead of cooling the whole room. The built-in fan helps the cool air spread over an area of 3-4 square meters (32 -43 ft) around you, and moveable grill directs the flow.

  • Beverly
    7/13/2017 11:03 AM

Is this device comparable to the "swamp coolers" that are often used in climates such as in Arizona?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 11:27 AM

@Beverly On the one hand, Evapolar has the same working principle as "swamp coolers".

But on the other hand, it does not lead to an unpleasant smell since the cartridge is made of inorganic material as a basalt nano-fibers.

  • Melissa
    7/13/2017 12:15 PM

@Philipp "Swamp cooler" is also what I was thinking when I saw this. I have also had good results just putting a fan blowing over a bowl of water in desperate situations. But this looks great if you need something on a regular basis!

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 12:47 PM

@Melissa Evapolar works on the principle of water evaporation.

If to put it simply, it absorbs heat, evaporates water and cools the air.

Basically, the efficiency of such process depends on the surface area, humidity, temperature of the incoming air, atmospheric pressure and airflow level. The core of our device is its unique evaporative EvaBreeze nanomaterial – it is made of ultra-thin mineral basalt nanofibers and has huge evaporative surface. It also prevents the formation of mold. Maybe you remember from physics classes, the larger the surface area is, the faster the water evaporates. Thus, the properties of our nanomaterial allow it to absorb great amounts of water and provide intense water evaporation.

I'm not sure that you achieve the same (best) effect if you just put a fan over a bowl of water.

  • Linda
    7/13/2017 11:11 AM

Once you fill it up with water how long will it last until you have to add more?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest

@Linda The water tank necessary be filled in 4-6 hours.

  • Sharon
    7/13/2017 11:12 AM

I have pets I am looking for something I can put in my car and not worry about the dogs getting hot. Battery?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 11:36 AM

@Sharon Yes, Evapolar can cool the dog, but it can perceive the unit as a toy. So you need to be careful. Evapolar is extremely energy efficient consuming only 10W and it could be supplied with a simplest USB car power adaptor. However, we do not recommend using Evapolar in the car. The cooler should stand on a flat surface.

  • Dave
    7/13/2017 12:00 PM

@Sharon--I doubt that this device would cool enough to keep the dogs safe in a parked car.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    7/13/2017 12:02 PM

@Dave Evapolar would work well for cooling an area about the size of a car - the issue is that it would likely leak when used in a car. Cars don't have many flat surfaces, and Evapolar works best when on a stable, flat surface.

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 12:34 PM

@Mike Thanks, you are right! @DAVE First of all, Evapolar created for personal comfort zone around you. (cools about 3-4 sq).

I run an outdoors booth at a farmers market in Dallas where it is quite hot in the Summer. Will this device provide any relief under my 10 foot x 10 foot E-Z Up?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 11:49 AM

@Dominick I'm not sure because Evapolar creates personal microclimate on 32 -43 sq ft.

In your case, you have 100 sq ft.

  • S
    7/13/2017 12:03 PM

@Dominick If your humidity level is the same as in south Georgia or Alabama in the summer, this will not work for you. These are for arid climates with mostly no humidity.

  • maria rose
    maria rose
    7/13/2017 1:10 PM

@S So you are saying that if your humidity level is like Georgia and Alabama in the summer, this unit is not recommended. I live in the New York area where humidity in the summer can get to high 60's.(I have a temperature/humidity sensor in each room). I can deal with high 70's temperature if humidity is lower.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    7/13/2017 1:13 PM

@maria rose The Evapolar is fantastic because it retains cooling efficiency up to 75% humidity, so even in the really high humidity locations you mentioned this should still work for you!

  • Sonja
    7/13/2017 11:25 AM

I read it works for up to 6 hours. If you are using this at night and sleep more than 6 hours, will it shut itself off? Or is it going to wake you up to shut it off?

  • Cody
    7/13/2017 11:49 AM

@Sonja Yes, I have the same question. If I turn it on and go to sleep for 8 hours what happens after 6 hours when it runs out of water?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 11:52 AM

    @Cody @SONJA

Yes, absolutely! Once the water has drained Evapolar starts running like a typical fan.

Do not worry, this will not damage the device. In this case, the ambient temperature will not change (do not cool). Fill the tank with water and it will again work as a cooler.

  • Derrick

Hi, Sell me on this device. Tell me what makes it better than the Homedics version that is half the price. Other than power source. I could use the homedics one in car if I wanted with my a/c inverter etc..

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 12:25 PM

    @Derrick There are many differences.

    For instance:

    - more drop temperature value

    - Evapolar does not require a pump, unlike the Homedics which(consumes more power) Evapolar consumes less than 10W of electricity and is very energy efficient. It's 10 times more efficient than portable ACs and 10-20 times more effective than traditional split systems.

    - evaporative pads are made of inorganic material. Thus it stops bacteria spread.

  • Stephen
    7/13/2017 11:33 AM

Because this is an evaporative cooler, it depends on low relative humidity to operate properly. Yes, relative humidity goes down with increased temperature, but that renders it less effective during the evening hours when the relative humidity rises. It would cool very well during the time most people are sleeping. In any case, in humid areas the humidity is still too high to operate efficiently even during the hottest hours.

I live in an area where whole-house "swamp" (evaporative) coolers are common, and they are pretty much useless when the humidity gets above 35%. In the midwest, it rarely gets that low, even during the heat of the day.

Also, mold and calcification are serious drawbacks to this type of cooler. If you use distilled water in it, you can solve the calcification problem, but how do you prevent mold from forming?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 1:06 PM

Thanks for your question. We do not need to avoid mold or other bacteria because the evaporation cartridge is made from basalt nanofibers. This nanomaterial is inorganic, unlike materials used in "swamp coolers." For example, if the "swamp cooler" became useless at a humidity level above 35%, despite the fact that Evapolar retains cooling efficiency up to 75%.

Hello, I have 2 kids going back to college in a month and their dorms don't have air conditioning. Is this something that is suitable for their dorm rooms?

  • Philipp

I have the pleasure to inform you that Evapolar is a good thing for kids. They can carry Evapolar to different places (students often move).

We care about every customer, so if you are going to make an order, warn the kids that they do not sleep right in front of Evapolar.

I really like everything I see so far. How noisy is the fan?

  • Philipp
    Philipp – Special Guest
    7/13/2017 2:11 PM

@Mike Evapolar is no louder than the cooling fan of your computer! The noise level depends on the power you set yourself. The normal noise level is 28-45 dB.

  • Dana
    7/13/2017 3:36 PM

Hi Philipp, It seems this could work well to cool the sleeping space under a pickup truck bed cap, especially in the southwest. The truck would be still at night, so solving the problems mentioned below. Would you agree that this might work well? Square footage is about 35 ft2.

This was one of the first items I backed on Indiegogo, and I am so glad I did! I was caretaking for my mother, who liked to keep her house very warm all year. I got two, for my room and office, and they worked perfectly. The operation is one button on top, which allows you to target the temperature, change to sleep mode, and adjust the fan speed all in one. I am backing the new campaign for the next iteration, and looking forward to using it outdoors. Good product, good company.

Can this unit run in tandem at night with the whole house AC which does not obviously engage as much at night as in the daytime? Wasn't sure if used on the nightstand it would work effectively if the AC comes on as the temperature rises. The temperature in Arizona is hot even past midnight to early morning. Very cool item though!
