Vase-like jewelry

A Blossom A Day

When actress and artist Samantha Lockwood was in her late teens and working as a waitress, her grandmother suggested she wear a flower in her hair. It turned out to be a fun conversation starter with customers – and a stylish way to get bigger tips. But Samantha had a tough time keeping the flower fresh and in place for an entire shift. Her dilemma inspired an ingenious solution: jewelry that’s designed to nourish and display beautiful fresh flowers.

Samantha’s Fleurings creations are shaped like vases and hold just enough water for a special stem – such as a small orchid, daisy or mum. Her earrings and necklaces are finished in brushed gold, brushed silver or polished silver. They’re ideal for thin-stemmed flowers; thicker stems may need to be trimmed lengthwise to fit (or you can choose the larger opening necklace).

There’s something special about wearing fresh flowers, whether you’re dressed casually for a day trip or headed out for the evening. With Fluerings, you can keep your look elegant, vibrant and as varied as the flowers in bloom. You’ll smell great, too!

How unique and beautiful!! Artificial flowers could never match the beauty of natures talent. Such a simple but innovative idea. Well done.

@Jodi: Hi Jodi! That is so true, real flowers have great beauty. However, as an alternative, if you don't have the right real flowers, artificial flowers can also be used in Fleurings. They are a solid back up plan :)

Good for you Samantha! My husband, another couple and I had dinner at the restaurant where you were working(several months ago)We met you in the "patisserie" for dessert. You were wearing one of your necklaces, with a pretty orchid, you were talking about wanting to promote it etc... I remember thinking then, what a creative, and pretty idea that it was! So happy to see that things are going so well!

Hello - the idea is beautiful, but how do the flowers stay in the earrings or necklace when you are moving, bending, etc. during the day? Or if it is windy? I can also imagine the flowers snagging on things and getting torn or pulled out of the little vases...how can they possibly last the whole time you're out and about? Thanks!

@AJ: I did not find that wind was an issue. They stay in if you make sure you have a good fit. If the stem is too thin, simply put in several (as I am wearing in the video). If you have a stem that is too large, slice it down vertically. With the necklaces be mindful when you hug other people, but other than that they stayed intact. Super delicate flowers are not ideal, but are fine if you are out and about where you have access to flowers and can switch half way through the day as needed. Firmer flowers such as roses and orchids are really durable. I wore the earrings like Jen has on with the same pair of orchids for 3 consecutive days-only then did they start to wilt. After they began to wilt I went back to the orchid plant for a fresh set. If you are concerned about this I suggest the earring styles, where they will be suspended safely.

@AJ: great question AJ... Some helpful hints for you from all of my years of experience wearing Fleurings are as follows...

    1. If you wear skinny stemmed flowers - bunch them together so that they fit snuggly into the jewelry.

    2. Try your best to choose a flower that fit exactly into your jewelry, it should be slightly snug. Make sure that you push the stems down to the bottom of the piece... Truly there should not be any stem showing, just the flower.

    3. You can also use a toothpick to slide in next to your stem to secure it in place (break off the pointy part on the top).

    4. Wear an artificial flower if you intend on running lots of errands. Real flowers are most certainly delicate and that's how nature made them so we have to work around their nature. :)

    5. If you find that your petals are falling off perhaps you should choose a flower that has just bloomed, older flowers tend to fall apart more.

    6. It's fine to wear flowers in the sun but fresh flowers will not last as long if there is tremendous heat. So again, on really scorching days, just use an artificial flower, or bring it with you if you want the back up option if you want to wear the real flower first.

    7. Every flower has what I like to call "wear time" ... Orchids will give you the most mileage, then Roses and Mums are a close tie for second, Daisies are next. But your options are endless.

    8. When you wear fresh flowers you have to remember they are living things and you have to treat them respectfully when you wear them. Meaning, some people may not even realize that your flowers are real because the whole concept of Fleurings is new! So when someone gives you a hug and squeezes you it can potentially damage the flower you are wearing, so you need to let people know to be careful ... just say "These are real!"

    9. If the flowers fit properly wind is no issue.

    10. If your flowers are snagging on things that is just something you as the user will have to try to avoid best as possible. I'm not sure what they would snag on but just try to avoid doing that activity or wearing the thing you believe they would snag on... that's just my general common sense response to that one... but I personally haven't had any problems with snagging yet.

Overall Fleurings are definitely the type of jewelry you live with and play with over time. See how they work for your needs.

For me personally I wear flowers when I go on any "date night" with my boyfriend, family get togethers, out to dinner with my girlfriends, sometimes for meetings and always for special ocassions. For instance to graduations or to birthday parties... anywhere where I want to dress up. Fresh orchids and daisies are my personal faves for the small Classic Fleurings pieces and roses are my favorites for the Large Necklaces. I get my orchids as potted plants or as cut bunches (dendrobium orchids are often sold as cut stems) from Trader Joes, or the Supermarket. Daisies and Roses I often pick from flowers that are growing on bushes around my house.

Hope all of this insight helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Love, love , my earrings, but I usually just wear one.

I am an orchid grower, so I always have a good selection of flowers.

What about designing a pin to be worn in the Fall with jackets or blazers?

Lovely idea - but I'm curious about a version for wearing in your hair? I understand it would be a little more engineering to ensure water doesn't leak, but it does seem possible - like the plastic flower holders from florists with the rubber, poke-through top to keep flowers fresh in corsages.
