Silk Newsprint Apparel

Fashion Edition

When you settle in to enjoy the Sunday paper, there’s no more fitting attire than a silk kimono printed with classic New York Times articles. The glamorous dressing gown isn’t just for catching up with the news, of course. When you’re lingering over a cup of coffee before the chaos of the day begins, or you’re curled up with a book after dinner, the newspaper robe from Flotsam+Jetsam wears elegantly and drapes beautifully. You’ll want to start and end every day wrapped in its prose.

Meltem Birey -- an interior designer, gallery owner, and founder of Flotsam+Jetsam -- has a passion for digital textiles. She was inspired to create the newspaper print by a memory of her father, an architect who used to sketch on newspapers. She worked with the same print to create a men’s tie and bow tie, too. They’re statement pieces that are bold without going overboard, and the craftsmanship is impeccable. Meltem’s kimono, as well as her ties, are designed in Philadelphia and made to order.

Ordinary newsprint is a familiar, humble material. Rendered on fine silk, the iconic New York Times captures a whole new audience of people who appreciate the intersection of culture, fashion and art.

Grommet Launch Conversation

  • Meltem

Hello Everyone! I am thrilled that The Grommet chose to feature our kimono + ties with New York Times print. Though we have many other products ranging from pillows to fashion items, these 3 pieces embody the essence of our studio. The newspaper print is very prominent in my designs, often the background of many of my textiles. I now realize the significance of it comes from watching my father sketch on the morning paper all the time. I hadn't considered where this near-obsession came from before being asked by The Grommet. Plus, I am in love with the written word - the visual of that comforts me. I sincerely hope you will love these amazing pieces as much as we do!
