Vintage Inspired Paperboard Clock

Flat Baroque

How do you improve on the ornate cuckoo clocks made in Germany in the 18th century?

FunDeco did it by taking a real functioning quartz clock, putting it in a lightweight paperboard frame, giving the classic baroque design a quirky update, leaving out the noisy cuckoo, and making their Flew the Coop No Cuckoo Cuckoo Clock right
here in the good ol’ U.S.A.

FunDeco began as a family affair. When Founder Todd Meissner saw his father’s printing business falling off, he went looking for a new way to use its resources. With four kids of his own in college, Todd found his inspiration. He started making decorative dorm items from the rigid, environmentally sustainable and recyclable matte paperboard at his father’s company.

Today, Todd’s No Cuckoo Cuckoo Clocks are still made in Wisconsin. They make a perfect gift for anyone who’s cuckoo for fun décor.

I'm thinking ahead for Christmas. This looks like the perfect gift for my granddaughter's dorm room. Are the colors shown the only colors it comes in?

@Myra Great question Myra! Yes..currently we only offer the 6 colors shown on the site in the 2 different sizes.

I would love to get a large CooCoo clock in black. Any chance of that happening? Alan ([email protected]).

@Alan The closest we can get to black is with our gray version of the clock. Thanks for the question Alan!

  • Cynthia
    9/9/2015 3:06 PM

@Todd could you mask off the grey face of the clock and spray paint it black? Would the paperboard frame take the paint? Just curious about different options.

@Cynthia Interesting idea Cynthia! I would think it is possible. The concern would be adequately painting the edges. Not sure how that would look.

  • Kate
    9/9/2015 4:15 PM

@Todd I'm thinking of hand painting the leaves and the birds. I think it would be fun to try.

@Kate Great idea Kate! Yes, decorating these in different colors as a craft item is a possibility.

    Hi Todd,

I love the clock and wanted to know if regular numbers were an option, rather than the Roman numerals.

  • Todd

@Susan Great question Susan. Unfortunately, at this time we only offer the Roman numerals.

  • Jeffrey

I would buy this clock if it had "the annoying Cuckoo". Who wants a Cuckoo clock that doesn't Cuckoo:)

  • Nelson

    @Jeffrey Ditto for me.

@Nelson Jeffrey & Nelson, we have received this same feedback from others. During our focus group sessions, however, the majority of participants preferred a "ban" on the bird. Fortunately there are plenty of options out there for consumers who still prefer an actual cuckoo clock!

    9/9/2015 4:08 PM

@Kate LOL It will cost a whole lot more for that kind of mechanism. I've priced them

  • Lynn
    9/9/2015 1:37 PM

Since this is a paperboard product, would I be able to personalize it with my own scrapbook paper and/or ink and paint?

  • Todd

    9/9/2015 1:45 PM

@Lynn Great question Lynn! If you would like to decorate the product, I recommend opting for the white variation of the clock. The surface will easily accept ink, paint or glue.

  • Ruth

These are cute, but seeing what they are made out of seems like the price is WAY expensive. I would pay 10.00 for one. But that's it. Adorable design and colors are great, but just seems like alot of money for this product.

@Ruth Thanks for your honest opinion Ruth. We occasionally get this response based on the fact that these are made of a paper product. Offering up an environmentally responsible and lightweight product requires a bit of sacrifice in the area of durability.

Not to mention these are made in the USA, Ruth!

  • Cynthia
    9/9/2015 3:01 PM

Actually, I think the price is quite reasonable. It's made in the USA, obviously designed and precision laser cut with a Quartz movement. I challenge anyone to make a similar product for any cheaper! Good job, guys!

    @Mike ie: Ruth, IMHO, sounds a lot like my eBay best offers that will give me a $1 profit & free shipping. Congrats on coming up with THE PERFECT PRICE POINT for each of your sizes. I'll order some as soon as my eBay orders pick up! ;}

Thanks, Marjorie! I think. You're not ordering from eBay are you..?

  • Joy
    9/9/2015 2:14 PM

This are neat. Actually the best part is not having to pull the weights up every day. The cuckoo was okay. I like these and hope to get one soon. I think the price is acceptable, now what the shipping is I don't know. I think this is a clever idea and I suppose you will expand the concept with different colors and dial faces, but for now six choices times two seems plenty. Clever.

Todd, if you don't have the color we want, do you think we could paint it with a craft paint?

  • Linda
    9/9/2015 4:14 PM

@Kate I am reading all of these comments on color choices, I have used the chalk paint on many different surfaces, from wood to material and I think that would work. Just get the white and repaint it....

  • Todd

    9/9/2015 4:24 PM

@Linda Thanks for chiming in on this topic Linda! Kate, I would agree with Linda that this product would be easy to paint and decorate. Since the white version is essentially an untreated surface, that would be the best product to start with.

Great product.Nice looking, clean, and priced right! We love the clock, since we were married in Germany ,while in the Army, it is great to see this. The "cuckoo clocks" from Germany are high price and noise! Now we have our "memories from our wedding event and place, in a fancy style and no screaming birdie. Peace, yeah!

I'm not sure if that is in FunDeco's plans, Rebecca, but it sounds like that could be a dynamite DIY project!
