Assistance Devices

Helping Hands

Park Owens watched his father struggle with everyday activities as he grew older, and the experience inspired Park to put his product development experience to work. He founded Juvo, which creates assistive devices for active seniors who need help solving challenges around the home.

Juvo’s tools target specific scenarios: The E-Z Open Grip Claw makes it easier to open a jar, for instance, and the Stand-Up Cane Tip keeps a cane from tipping over. But their appeal is about more than simple utility. Design is a priority,
and you can see the attention to detail that makes these products look as great as they perform. The streamlined Travel Seat + Cane combines a mobility aid with a fold-up seat so users can take a sitting break even when they’re on the go. The Reacher Grabber has a comfortable ergonomic handle, integrated dressing hook (to help pull on socks and pants), and a unique trigger lock so the user can keep the claw closed without applying constant pressure.

As the Baby Boomer generation ages, more and more seniors are finding they can benefit from tools that help with daily living -- jar openers, walking aids and reaching tools -- so they can retain their independence as much as possible. It’s an underserved area, and Park’s emphasis on quality engineering is raising the design bar.

Can you explain in a little more deal the Cane Stand Up Tip? Can you leave it on your cane as you walk along or use it when you 'park' your cane?

Yes, wondering the same thing. Thanks.

    Nancy - Great question.

This product fully replaces the tip that comes with your cane. You do not have to continually take it on and off.

Just remove your old cane tip, install the new Juvo Stand-Up Cane Tip, (1-2 minutes) and it becomes your new permanent, enhanced cane tip. Better stability, better traction and it holds your cane upright on a flat, even surface.

    Thank you.

    Hi Park,

My mother weighs over 200 pounds. What is the suggested weight range for your Travel Seat and Cane?

    Thank you.

@ Sue The weight capacity is 250 lbs.

It is a very sturdy, yet lightweight product. We designed it and engineered it from scratch. There are some very flimsy versions on the market. There was such interest in it, that we developed our own much better version!

    Thank you. Park

@Nancy, I put the Cane Tip on my mother-in-law's cane (she's 92!) and she loves it. She doesn't have to find a place to prop up her cane when she sits down or when she needs to use both hands for something. The tip also gives the cane more stability because of its width.

I am looking at the travel seat and cane - is it very heavy and does it really work well as a cane? Thank you.

@ Carol This product is very lightweight at 2 lbs. You can lift it with one finger.

At the same time it is quite sturdy; will hold up to 250 lbs.

The cane has a soft co-molded grip.

The temporary seat slides open/closed easily without pinching fingers like some cheaper models.

    We hope you enjoy it!

@Park Owens He is right! It is very light and easy to operate. I don't really need it as a cane, yet, but take it when I know that I'm going to have to wait in long lines! Having a "ready" seat is great.

How high is the seat when deployed. It is somewhat of a problem getting up, especially after sitting for a long period. A seat high enough to rest but not low enough to have knees bent completely.

    is most desirable.

@ William Harrington That's a great question. Park will be able to stop back in the morning and let us know.

@ William Harrington - William, the seat surface is 20" off the ground in the open position. The top of the cane handle is 34.5" top to bottom in the cane position.

We studied male/female average heights and arrived at this average. There are several adjustable versions in the market but they tend to be flimsy. We opted for strength and light weight.

You bring up another good point. The Travel Seat + Cane is intended to be straddled, per instructions on product. In this position, the handle offers some assistance in standing up. We do NOT recommend sitting with the handle behind you. Thank you.

Park- As an inventory myself I am very impressed with how well thought out the designs of your products are. I'm also an occupational therapist. You should market your products to OTs and PTs. Best of luck to you! Paula

    @Park Owens

I used to be a geriatric social worker... I would strongly suggest marketing to the home health agencies. They employ PTs and OTs. If you started there, they would help spread the word. If you have a catalogue that may help.

I am also an occupational therapist who does home health. I am thinking of purchasing a couple of your items to show to the patients I see. If they are interested, how do they order? Some of them are computer savvy but I am dealing with a population ranging in age from 60's to 90's and they do not always have or know how to use a computer. Thanks.

Ahh-Haaa, see?! You obviously need to invest in a print catalogue if you want to take the NEXT STEP. Many in the older generation want to "see it" first and some don't have computers. Just an observation. :)

hi - just a thought - your phrase "for seniors" is an odd label for your terrific looking products. Many people need assistance with reaching, gripping, walking, stabilizing their cane, regardless of whether or not they are 'seniors.' Thanks for listening.

I was really excited to see the cane that is also a seat for someone to take a break if needed until I tried to order and you are out of stock. Such a shame that something I would purchase for my father is unavalible. Please e-mail me when you think you will get more of this product in. I am really interested in this and I know my dad would love this unique and helpful cane/seat.

Can you notify me when the cane tips and travel seat/cane are available? Thank you. I'm technically NOT a senior for another decade but while standing in line at a recent community event I enviously eyed a man using a similar cane/seat. Standing for over an hour in the sun on concrete made that little tripod seat look very good!
