Celebrate Life’s Travels

Your phone may have a mapping app and your car may have a navigation system, but neither can compare to the look and feel of a real map. No digital substitute can take the place of a pinpricked map, riddled with past and future destinations. And no one makes it more personal than Map Your Travels, a Minneapolis company founded by Nancy Spangrud and David Hellstrom.

Their framed travel maps display where you've been and where
you want to go. You can choose world maps or US maps, or select a hobby-themed map if your travels revolve around sports or camping. A baseball lover can track road trips and stadium destinations with the Major League Baseball map, for instance, and the national parks version is perfect for camping enthusiasts.

Each map is printed on archival paper and mounted on a foam core with a mahogany-stained wood frame (a couple of laminated unframed poster maps are also available). Sets include pins and flags to track your journeys, and you can make yours personal with a customized plaque, too.

Whether a gift for yourself or a favorite traveler, these maps perfectly capture the spirit of adventure. They’ll stir up fond memories and spark great conversations when visitors see the places you’ve been.

We gave one of these to my in-laws last Christmas. They are big travelers (and also hard to buy for because they already have everything.) This was a unique gift. They enjoyed plotting all of their travels past and future.

This offer sounded attractive when you read the details about it. However when you look at the prices, the attractiveness is gone. It would be perfect if a person could order the maps without a frame or a choice of frames. The initial listing indicates a starting price of $8. But this is only for a box of pins to use with the maps. This is slightly misleading and should not be permitted. The starting price should be for the lowest priced map, not for a box of pins. Even better would be to indicate the lowest priced adult map, not the childrens map.

Again a great idea but the price is way out of line. More options should be available.

Just my thoughts. I am interested to see if this comment will be posted with this offer. It will affect how i view future offers by Grommet.

@Dan: I agree with you. I was excited about baseball ballpark map until I saw the price. And Daily Grommet always lists something as trite as the pushpins as the lowest price -- I believe it's called a "hook".

@Linda Wronski: Agreed! They need to change the logarithm to sort the most expensive item to the top. If they are doing it on purpose, that is just nasty.

@Dan and Linda and AJ: Thank you for your feedback. We always want to hear what you're thinking even if it's not favorable. We absolutely hate that "prices starting at" feature of our website. It's not done as a hook, because it has the opposite effect of irritating our community which is the last thing we strive to do. Unfortunately, although it looks like it should be an easy fix, we've had multiple developers look at it and there is no easy fix for it. It will be the first thing we tackle when we completely open up the coding again. For now it simply looks at the lowest priced item and pulls that price. Our only other option is to not offer the additional pushpins for someone who may want to include them with their order. Again, thank you for that feedback.

Dan, Linda & AJ: What Katherine writes is true: the starting at price isn't meant to be a hook. We struggle with this site functionality, but also want to offer our customers all the options they will need for the products they wish to purchase. So often, there are "add-ons" that are extra options. We also understand your concerns on price, but one of the reasons we selected Map Your Travels was because they offer 2 of their map in a laminated version for much less. The framed maps are high quality and special for those buying for their own home or as a gift.

It's painful to read these messages and we apologize to everyone who feels misguided by the 'starting at' price window on our site. We have heard this feedback before and we know it's a problem. The very last thing we would try to do is to trick our customers. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to explain the situation and we remain committed to correcting this asap.

Well my trully real visit to buy something and I get slammed in the gut. Single disabled mother, have looked in many places for a map of USA, excited,,,I watch the video, nice brief history on orgin. Bad choice for pricing, very misleading. I could afford the $9.99 even a little more for the map, but hey we have the dollar store for the push pins and to say the maps start off at 9.99 then find out it is the push pins HOW RUDE...

Sorry but I am real disappointed in your site and will not be back..The very best of luck to your company,,,a potential customers, with many friends on FB :)

what do you mean when you say personalized? It seems clear, but when I put it in my cart, nothing came up to give the child's name.

@sallydi: To personalize a framed map, write in the personalization (up to 50 characters including spaces) in the Gift Message (step 3) of check out.

It's hard to tell where the personalization goes. Does it go on the frame? On the map itself? Is there a picture of the personalization somewhere?

@Kathleen Hulsey: The personalization is printed on a plaque and mounted on the map itself. Here's 2 examples pf personalizations: (1) World Traveler Map and (2) US Traveler Map.
