Let Them Eat Candles

Edible Chocolate Candles

Wishful Eating

What’s better than birthday cake? One topped with edible candles made from chocolate.

Let Them Eat Candles makes beautiful chocolate candles topped with a traditional wick. Sing a round or two of Happy Birthday—that’s about as long as the lit wick will last—and once it’s blown out, toss the wick and enjoy your chocolate with a
bit of frosting on it.

Founder Loree Sandler thought typical birthday candles weren’t festive (or tasty) enough. Plus, as soon as the song is sung, they get thrown out.

Loree drew on her architecture background to create hundreds of prototypes. The winner is a gently tapered shape, with a narrow base that punctures cakes and cupcakes easily.

Plus, it provides a generous background for the edible transfer designs on the front. The wider top also gives the wick more room, which is important because chocolate melts much faster than a wax candle.

That’s why these edible little candles come in packs of three—light them, blow them out, and enjoy.

Hello celebrants, chocolate lovers, party-goers, and gift-givers. I’m excited to introduce Let Them Eat Candles to The Grommet, and happy to answer your questions.

  • Mike

Was this idea born out of the thought that candles kind of look delicious and you wanted to eat one? Because that's all I could think of.

  • Loree
    Loree – Special Guest
    2/3/2016 1:26 PM

Aside from watching people lick frosting off of candles (and often inadvertently biting), the idea for edible candles was born more out of desserts being so thoughtfully, lovingly made and presented, and candles being a generic afterthought - a missed opportunity. Why wish upon something that’s literally ruining your cake?

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    2/3/2016 1:26 PM

Yeah that's way better than my thought.

  • Mike

Why should people choose Let Them Eat Candles over the boring, traditional wax ones?

  • Loree
    Loree – Special Guest
    2/3/2016 1:27 PM

Let Them Eat Candles are beautiful, delicious, and new. They enhance celebrations and elevate desserts. Wax candles are a means to an end, while LTEC deliver memories in addition to wishes. Also, people use LTEC to express thanks and recognition as hostess gifts, anniversary gifts, company gifts to customers – you can’t say the same for wax candles!

What does it mean to you to be launching on The Grommet and what do you expect the feedback from the community to be like?

  • Loree

I love The Grommet’s goals – discovering innovative products, recognizing makers, sharing back-stories, helping consumers ‘buy differently’. The Grommet brings meaning and mindfulness to the marketplace. I’m honored to participate.

I hope feedback will be positive and encouraging. Once people grasp the idea of candles they can light and eat, they’re happily surprised. Of course, I’m so close to this product, that I’m not only brimming with ideas of product extensions, I’m hyper-aware of what could be better….

  • Loree
    Loree – Special Guest
    2/4/2016 11:25 AM

@Susan Store them away from sunlight or heat. They can but don't have to go in the fridge. Current "Enjoy by" dates for white chocolate 8/17/16, milk chocolate 3/8/17, dark chocolate 4/16/17. Thanks.

All 3 designs are very attractive. Have you thought of offering a set of 3 - 1 of each design?

  • Loree
    Loree – Special Guest
    2/4/2016 11:29 AM

@Christine Thank you. I have thought of mixing designs in a set but it gets tricky to accommodate more specific requests like colors etc. The Grommet selected these specific patterns and chocolates, and if there's more interest in mixing it up - maybe we can offer that here in the future!

What is the shelf-life of the candles? This would be perfect for someone I know but their birthday is not until July. Of course, I may need to get some beforehand to 'test' them to make sure it would be an acceptable addition to their birthday cake. ;-)

    What a great idea!

  • Loree

    2/4/2016 11:31 AM

@Connie Thanks, Connie. "Enjoy by" dates are:

    white chocolate 8/17/16

    milk chocolate 3/8/17

    dark chocolate 4/16/17

So you can test them and get them for your friend!

It would be nice if the candles were in the shape of numbers. Have you considered that at all?

  • Loree
    Loree – Special Guest
    2/4/2016 11:33 AM

@Patricia Yes. I want that, too. However custom molds for this product are crazy-complicated and costly. Most likely I'll use patterns that have numbers in some fun designs in the future. Thanks for the comment.

Such a great idea! I too am curious about shelf life and storage - I typically forget to buy candles early, so would be good to stock up if they'll last a bit.

  • Loree
    Loree – Special Guest
    2/4/2016 11:36 AM

@April You can definitely stock up. These candles have a nice shelf-life as long as they're not in a place they will melt. Under 70° - fridge or dark pantry. They make great gifts, too, so it's nice to keep them on hand. Appreciate your asking!

@Daphne You can find it when you click on the particular type of candle. It's listed in the chart to the right. I have a nut allergy in the house too. :(

  • Loree

    2/4/2016 11:59 AM

@Daphne The LTEC ingredient legend cannot claim vegan or nut free. While the dark chocolate candles would not technically be problematic for a vegan, it is not a claim I can officially make. Also, while I don't work with nuts of any kind, the facility I work in does use peanuts as well as tree nuts. Hopefully as my company grows I can accommodate everyone's wishes.

  • Loree

@Loree are the wicks coated in wax? Is it edible wax, and how long do they burn without melting the chocolate ?

  • Loree
    Loree – Special Guest
    2/4/2016 12:34 PM

@Marcia The wicks are short, like the stem of an apple, so they burn long enough for the happy birthday song, but will not be fueled by the chocolate. If you don't blow them out, the candles will self-extinguish. The wicks are coated in paraffin (FDA approved - used for coating fruit).

  • Loree
