Twig Terrariums

Small Worlds

What’s so special about a glass vessel, a pile of rocks, some plant life, and a little figurine or two? We’re not exactly sure where the magic comes from, but the combination is totally endearing. Maybe it’s the tiny people. They make it easy to imagine that the idyllic world created inside each moss terrarium is real.

creators of these precious worlds are two longtime friends, Michelle Inciarrano and Katy Maslow. They turned their love of terrarium-making into a business after realizing they each had about 50 terrariums in their houses and perhaps ought to find new homes for their work. The miniature people are their signature.

Each kit from Twig Terrariums contains everything you need to make your own little green world, complete with inhabitants. (Or if you’re not the DIY type, you can choose a ready-made style.) We tried it, and it’s a fun, therapeutic activity. The instructions are easy to follow, and maintenance is a breeze, too, since the terrariums don’t require a lot of attention. They don’t require a lot of light either which makes them the perfect cheery addition to any room in your home or office, even the windowless ones.

Hello all you Grommets! We are Katy and Michelle of Twig Terrariums, coming to you from beautiful Brooklyn, NY! We create moss terrariums and other small worlds in antique, vintage, and new glass containers - or any odd glass objects we find on our travels! We like to populate our little green worlds using miniature figurines - from happily grazing sheep (baaaa) to smoochin' couples to funny little hobos! Moss terrariums are super easy to care for and make for cool gifts - hey, we give each other terrariums all the time! We are so excited to be a part of the Daily Grommet and can't wait to answer your questions about Twig's little green worlds. We're both here today to be your mossy guides, so fire away!

The Twig terrariums are a great idea and very creative!

I'd like to suggest to the creator that they are missing out on a wider market by not having any figures of people of color.

@Kim: Hi! Thank you for your feedback! This is actually an important point and a big issue for us! Most of the figures are created in rather homogeneous areas of the globe, so we have to custom create ethnicities! This sounds so bizarre, but we want everyone to feel that there's a terrarium out there with their name on it =) Since we custom create and alter many of our figures, it allows us to get as accurate a representation as possible. We appreciate your thoughts, and want you to know that it's been on our collective Twiggy minds for some time.

@ali: Hi there! Twig's DIY Kits come with everything you need to create your own little green world! We provide the glass, fresh happy moss, little terrarium dweller, as well as rocks, soil, and filtration. Assembly and care instructions are also included. =)

Our DIY Kits come packaged all cute and stuff, too!

From what material are the little figures made?

  • Katy

    4/6/2011 4:22 PM

@Liz: The little people in Twig's terrariums are made of flesh and blood! For reals! Nah, really they're made of hard plastic, which is great for the moist environment within a terrarium. Unlike clay or wood miniatures, these figures won't get moldy. They're perfect in every way =)

Hi, Katy and Michelle! I'm wondering how long terrariums "live." If you take care of them properly, will they survive indefinitely? (I'm capable of killing just about any houseplant known to humankind despite my pipe dreams of having a lovely garden someday!)

@Julia E: An excellent question! It sounds like you and moss might be made for each other =)

Moss terrariums are the ultimate in low maintenance and can indeed live indefinitely. Us Twig ladies have our first ever terrariums - going strong!

Here are the basics on caring for your moss terrarium: keep it out of direct sun, as too much sun can cook the moss. Indirect light, filtered light, or artificial light are ideal. Every 2-4 weeks, you mist the moss with a spray bottle - just a few spritzes! With time, your terrarium may require even less care - misting every 4-6 weeks.

With a miniscaped moss terrarium, you can totally have that lovely garden of your dreams! =)

This project looks really fun! What plants can you use in terarinms?

  • Katy

@Christine: Hello there! Twig mainly creates moss terrariums - though we do play with plants and succulents on occasion! We have tons of plants around our studio, but love love love moss. There are approximately 15,000 varieties of moss and we consider ourselves total mossophiles. We choose the types of moss that work best in a terrarium and that play well together - sheet moss, mood moss, and reindeer moss are just some of the fun types that come in our terrariums! =)

I was disheartened to learn the figurines do not come in African American. You have my email address, please email me if they become available. Thanks so much! 3
