Yummy Tradition

Delicate layers of dough surround (and barely contain) yummy fillings like English walnuts, tart cranberries, sweet apples, or rich chocolate. Strawberry Hill Povitica bread, brought to us by one of our Grommet team members, has us hooked. Artisan bakers hand-roll dough until it’s paper-thin, then generously spread scrumptious homemade fillings on top. It’s all hand-rolled up and swirled before being baked to perfection. If we told you a family named O’Leary bakes this perfect Slavic swirled bread, you might find it odd—until you learn the O’Learys are Serbian-Croatian. Dennis carries on the business started by his father decades ago with Grandmother’s recipe. Povitica has been a holiday staple in the O’Leary family for generations. Giving this mouth-watering treat to someone outside your family is a sign of respect. If you can stand to give it away, Strawberry Hill Povitica bread comes in a giftable box. Who knows? You could be starting someone else’s holiday tradition. Or daily obsession.

Hi, My family usually sends baskets to family out west for the Holidays. However, some of them have diabetes. How high in sugar are your products?

  • Marc

    10/15/2015 10:34 AM

@Becca As with all things sweet, Povitica does contain it's fair share of sugar. I do have quite a few diabetic folks that will cut each loaf into slices, place them in a sandwich bag and then back in the box. After a quick freeze they simply pull out one slice at a time to help manage their portions. This tip is also good for those who may want to keep all this goodness for themselves!

How is this product shipped? Frozen, refrigerated, overnight. Just making sure it will be really fresh when it arrives. Then, if not eaten immediately do you recommend regrigerating or freezing the loaf? How many days would it remain fresh in the refrigerator?

  • Marc

    10/15/2015 12:02 PM

@BrendaAll Povitica's are baked to order. Once your order is placed, we will create a baking slip and it will travel with your Povitica's until it's baked, boxed, shrink wrapped (to protect freshness) and shipped right to your door. Usually just a handful of days. Povitica is best eaten on day6. It gives all of the fabulous ingredients time to soften the thin layers of sweet dough.

Good hiding places are the freezer (up to 180 days) and on your counter top, behind the bananas for up to a week. Refrigeration will double your countertop time. Might I suggest a Pad of butter atop a slice and a quick ride on the microwave's turntable for round 30 seconds. H_E_A_V_E_N!

Yes I am using a lot of exclamation points in this post because that is the only way I know to express how wonderful this product is. It is a good thing they are not located right up the street or I would have it every day for breakfast. I have even been known to have a slice just for a special evening treat. So, i'm guessing that this may be a post for another item? I also guarantee all of our hand-made Povitica's so I'm all confused. Anyway, please contact me directly if this isn't possibly an error on your end and I will always make it right.

Hi Betty, I'm sorry to hear about that experience. As with all food products, the actual product never looks as pristine as the photos. That is just how it goes. It's also hard to judge a customer service off one interaction especially coming in with a negative mindset. And they're right, they can't control your likes and dislikes of food products. It is completely subjective.

Again, I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but what the povitica may lack in cosmetic beauty it certainly makes up for in taste. The entire Grommet office will back that up. I hope you give it another chance!

@Mike Sir: I worked in customer service and I did not have a negative anything. I had a product that was delivered to and I did not like the product. I am not making up that I was told they could not be responsible for my likes and dislikes. I also called more than once and spoke to someone that said they were a manager, not only the customer service answering the phone.

I have purchased many things from your site in the past, and have been pleased. I purchased these breads directly from their website so I assumed they would be fresh. I still hold to my review they are not as pictured or advertised.

I am not doubting your claims at all, Betty. I am saying it can be very tricky with returning food items because of the reason they cited. Also, food pictures always look flawless.

I am glad to hear you have had success with us in the past and I wholeheartedly hope you continue to do so. I also hope your experience with Strawberry Hill was merely a fluke. Because I have tasted Strawberry Hill and it was heavenly as Sue mentioned before. I would hate for you to miss such a delicious opportunity!
