All of us here at MonkeyLectric love riding our bikes and we developed the Monkey Lights to make riding at night just as fun as the day, and to share our good cheer with those around us.
The first thing you notice when you ride around town with a Monkey Light is how many smiles you get. Just remember to smile back! -
Would love to order this for my son for Christmas. I'm unsure of how many. I sounds like you need 2 if you want both wheels lit up and 4 if you want them lit on both sides?
-
@Karma
Hi Karma,
Aaron from The Grommet here. You can certainly make do with two lights, one for each wheel. The lights show on both sides of the wheel, so that is not a problem.
The consideration comes down to the visibility of the pattern. The image displays clearly at 10mph and above with one light, but adding a second light means you can see the patterns at lower speeds.
I have a single light on my front wheel and thoroughly enjoy it. The patterns show clearly and works just as pictured. -
Am I reading this right in that order to achieve the results pictured, you would need two of them on each wheel, so four @ 39.95/59.95 each?
-
@Tracey
Hi Tracey,
Good question. I've responded to a similar question from Karma above, so apologies for the redundancy in my response.
You can certainly make do with two lights, one for each wheel. The lights show on both sides of the wheel, so that is not a problem. The image displays clearly at 10mph and above with one light and they look great. Just remember you won't get a full display until you reach 10mph. -
Is there an anti-theft device with these?
-
@mary
Hi Mary,
The package includes a Stainless Steel anti-theft strap which makes it difficult for thieves to remove the light. -
Do any of the bikes in the video show using 1 per wheel?
How much does the light console weigh?
I ride with a pretty serious, early morning group in Chicago and these would be great!
Look forward to a reply to not only my question but those before. -
@D
Hi D,
No worries! Glad you were able to find the answers you were looking for.
The wheels in the video feature one light, and given that you likely ride at a quick pace, you are sure to be the talk of your group! -
oops - just read the weight specs. :0

Will these work on spoked wheelchair wheels?
-
@Phyllis
Hi Phyllis,
I am reaching out to Laurent now and will be in touch as soon as I know the answer. -
@Aaron @Phyllis,
Hi Phyllis, The lights will work on a spoked wheel chair and are a great way to increase your visibility at night. However, the patterns will not start to display until you are going at least 8mph. -
@Laurent I would also like to get these for a wheelchair - will it fit any size wheels? Is there a way in the future that the pattern could appear at a lower speed?
-
@Diane
Hi Dianne,
The issue really comes down to the human eye, unfortunately. Persistence of vision kicks in at 8 mph or so, which means we can only see patterns beginning to form in the wheel at this speed. The faster you go, the more the wheel is filled. -
Would these work on a motorcycle? I love the variety of unique items y'all showcase.
Thanks,
Dragin' -
@KAREN
Hi Karen,
Thank you for the kind words! We are thrilled that you enjoy the selection of products.
For MonkeyLectric, the lights are specifically designed to be attached to bicycle wheels, based on the shape of the attachment points. I wouldn't recommend it, but you may be able to figure out a way to attach them to a motorcycle wheel. However, they have an upper speed limit of 40 mph/65 km/h. -
@Aaron @Karen
As Aaron mentioned our lights are designed for use on bicycles. We are focused on promoting everyday cycling as a way to reduce dependence on cars and motorized for short city trips and commuting. Motorcycle wheels have very small tolerances and function at very high RPMs. A slight imbalance that would not be felt on a bicycle can become very large if you are travelling at freeway speeds and accelerating quickly.
Laurent -
Can they be programmed to display Text? I am an entrepreneurial small biz owner and would love to be able to display my Co. Name at out local Famer's market and Street Events ?
-
@Auggie
Hi Auggie,
These particular products are not programmable, unfortunately. They do have a new product coming out in March, 2014 that will be programmable. Stay tuned! -
Aaron,
The lights really look need. I might want to get them for myself....67 year old rider.
One comment make sure your demo riders wear their helmets. The lights may just make them a more visible target for the cars and trucks on the road. We don't want to give any young riders the wrong ideas.
Mike -
@Michael
Hi Mike,
Thank you for the feedback regarding helmets. We have an ongoing internal debate about helmet use and showing helmets in our promotional videos. Some of us use them always, some of us use them sometimes and some of us never use them. While in most of the US helmet use is probably a good idea, it is uncommon in countries like the Netherlands and Denmark where there is a very high bicycle ridership. Do helmets help reduce injuries? Yes. Should minors be encouraged to wear helmets? Yes. Bottom line is if you live in a community with agressive drivers and poor cycling infrastructure wearing a helmet is a good idea.
Laurent -
wondering if these would work on wheelchairs-I can't actually see why not. Please let me know if you have tried these on chairs with wheel spokes like Spok Spokes. Thanks!
Cathy -
@Cathy
Hi Cathy,
The lights are a great way of increasing your side visibility and will fit onto almost all spoked wheelchairs. We get wheelchair users who love using these instead of holding a flashlight in their hands, However, as I mentioned above, the patterns will only start to display at above 8mph.
Laurent -
@Laurent oh haha I just asked that :)
-
Have you ever thought about marketing these to wheelchair users?
-
@Tori
Hi Tori,
I'm not sure if they have considered this, but it certainly is a great idea. -
Are these lights replacable if they burn out? And if so what are the costs to replace them? As i would be purching this for a child and they would certainly be used very often as in everyday . By the way i think this is a great product!!! ain
-
@cheri
Hi Cheri,
I am reaching out to the partner for their official word. I will email you directly with their response. Thank you for your patience and kind words about the product! -
Hi Cheri,
The LEDs have a lifespan of around 30,000 which is about 1,250 days or 3.5 years of non-stop 24 hour a day use. So they are sure to last a while.
However, once the LEDs do burn out it is not possible to have them replaced. -
I am wondering if they could be used on a motorcycle for a night race?
-
@Diane
Hi Diane,
I think Laurent said it best above:
