Gurus

Natural Rubber Sandals

Comfort Afoot

These natural rubber sandals are steps beyond your average flip-flops. They’re eco-friendly, comfy, and don’t make that flapping noise when you walk.

Maker Prem Thomas modeled Gurus after 5,000-year-old traditional wooden sandals from India. (The same shoes worn by his grandfather and Ghandi himself.)

The minimalist design almost looks like you’re barefoot—and it feels like it, too. Made of sustainably grown rubber latex, the
sandals conform to your feet over time. And because they’re made from natural rubber, they’re durable and biodegradable, unlike the petroleum-based synthetic rubber in most other flip-flops.

To further help the planet, for every pair of Gurus sold, they plant a tree in Africa to help the environment and the population. Working with local communities, they choose trees that are apt to the solve issues in that area—from banana trees for food to plants that prevent erosion.

Fashion always repeats itself, and with these sandals, it’s better the second time around.

Hello Grommet fans! I’m Prem Thomas, CEO and Founder at Gurus. I am excited to introduce Gurus sandals to you today. We've spent a lot of time redesigning an ancient Indian sandal into a modern classic and think we've really created the best flip-flop. We're also excited to talk about our Indian roots and sustainable practices.

How important was it for you to focus on sustainability when creating Gurus?

  • Prem

@Mike Very important. Gurus are made from primarily natural rubber that is sourced from trees, so we wanted to give back in this same way. Also, Kerala, the state my family is from in India is an agricultural region, so creating an environmentally sustainable business made a lot of sense.

How did you get involved with local communities in Africa to plant trees and crops for each pair of Gurus sold?

  • Prem

@Mike We thought it would make sense for our give back be directly tied to the source of Gurus, trees, so we looked for a tree planting non-profit. We ultimately chose Trees for the Future because of their sustainable practices and focus on training to ensure that local communities have a long term benefit on trees.

How are the arches in your sandals? I need more support than cheap, flat ones. Can you share a close up photo of them?

@CATHERINE Hey Catherine, we don't have arch support, but Gurus conform to your feet over time so you get some added support, but regardless they are very cushiony. I'll see if the Grommet Team can upload some close ups!

These look like potentially good camp "shoes". For weight-constrained hikers, how much do they weigh, per pair.

    Thnx.

@Jim They are great for camping. We take them to the springs here in Florida quite often. Even our largest size is only about 11 ounces without the packaging, so they are great for weekend trips when pack weight matters!

@Prem I have narrow skinny feet. I have a lot of trouble wearing average size flip-flops because I just walk right out of them. Can you provide with length and width and even possibly the height of the band that goes across the arch so I can see if they would fit me or can you just tell me that you have a pair that fits narrow skinny feet? I wear a 9 1/2 a size shoe

@Vicki Hey Vicki, if you are a 9.5 I recommend the size M on Grommet. It is about 10.25 inches long and goes from 4 inches wide at the toes to 2.75 at the ankles. What is cool about Gurus is that you can actually twist the strap to adjust them to thinner or wider ankles. So if the strap is set to a lower height it will be tighter on your foot. Even if it is loose, it will stay on after the sandals conform to your feet :)

@Vicki--I have a similar issue with footwear: size 9 and super narrow feet. I took Prem's advice and tried on the M in our office, to give you my experience. They were a bit too long but otherwise were surprisingly snug at the top of my foot. I tried putting the trap leaning toward my toes and also higher up towards my ankle. As Prem indicates, the lower/forward position worked better.

I have very hard to fit feet - small and wide. How long is the strap for an Extra-Small size, and where is the strap placed (In relation to the toe post)?

@Susan Hey! the XS is about 9.25 inches long and the strap attaches about 5 inches beyond that strap. We do very well with wide feet as the strap can be twisted to make the hole opening bigger :) Let me know if that makes sense

    How do you adjust the strap? If the answer is in the video, sorry;

@Joy Hey Joy, not a problem. you can twist the strap by pulling the plug out of the bottom slightly and rotating the top and the bottom. This will change the size of the strap opening and allow it to sit higher and lower on your foot. Let me know if that makes sense!

Impressive! On the video, in the background, there are many different colors of Gurus that aren't offered on the "Buy" page. Where are those available?

I have never liked flip-flops as they seem to fly off my feet too easily. It seemed like work in flexing my foot to keep pressure on the sandal. I like the strap that goes along the top of the foot, but please explain in detail again how that strap can be "adjusted" tighter.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    7/26/2016 2:46 PM

Hi Mark, this is straight from Prem:

To adjust the strap you actually pull the plug out slightly and twist them so it sits closer to the sole or higher up. So if the strap is set to a lower height it will be tighter on your foot. Even if it is loose, it will stay on after the sandals conform to your feet :)
