Uncle Goose

Alphabet and Specialty Blocks

Stack and Learn

While Mother Goose was weaving fairy tales and nursery rhymes, Uncle Goose turned his talents to another playroom classic: building blocks. Craftspeople and artisans come from far and wide to make Uncle Goose blocks that have the look and feel of traditional wooden alphabet blocks, but with an educational twist. Along with the ABCs, Uncle Goose block sets are adorned with math symbols, scientific images, historic leaders and foreign languages.

So just who is this Uncle Goose character? Pete Bultman runs the family business, which his father started in Michigan in 1983. Pete continues the tradition set by his father of using quality materials to recreate nostalgic toys that mix playing and learning in a graphic, tactile way.

Each set of blocks is handcrafted from basswood, and the graphics are rendered in nontoxic, child-safe inks. In addition to the classic ABC blocks, Uncle Goose also offers Elemental, which illustrates the entire periodic table of elements on 20 wood cubes. For math and patterning, the Groovie set displays numbers, math symbols, and geometric shapes on 28 blocks. Presidential tackles all 44 presidents, and Braille combines the ABCs with sign language. Uncle Goose also offers a dozen foreign language options, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, German, Arabic and Greek. Each heirloom-quality set will last for generations -- no batteries required.

Grommet Launch Conversation

  • Pete

Hi Daily Grommet Fans! I am proud that Daily Grommet has chosen Uncle Goose blocks as today's Grommet. My father started this company thirty years ago. He wanted me to have the toys that had inspired him as a child; the type of toy that was high touch instead of high tech. Today, we have grown our line beyond the classic ABC blocks to include a variety of languages and specialty blocks that will continue to inspire young learners. We are also proud to say that we are still handcrafted by a group of artisans right here in Michigan using sustainable Michigan basswood and child-safe inks. I am looking forward to answering any questions you have.

Is it possible to do a set in any South Asian Language such as Hindi or Bengali? Thanks!

@Jheel: We are planning on coming out with a Hindi block set in 2012. We receive many requests for different language blocks and we will continue to add to our selection every year.

@skijester: They don't have a notification process. You will need to stay tuned to their site.

@Pete: My wife is learning Chinese. It's unclear from the photos as to whether a block has enough information about the meaning of a Chinese symbol to be useful to a beginner. What sayest thou?

@Sundog: The Chinese language contains many characters but we chose 32 to put on our block set. Each block shows the Chinese Character, English translation, pin yin (how to draw each character), and numbers. So it is easy to comprehend for someone who is beginning to learn Chinese but it only goes through a small portion of the language.

I would love to be able to have these shipped to my Grandson in Australia. Are you set up for this? His mom lived in China for three years and needs to keep up her little bit of Mandarin as well as baby learning it.

@LoriBroe: What a great idea! Unfortunately we don't ship to Australia. You will have to have them shipped to yourself and post them to Australia personally.

I did not notice what the age appropriateness is recommended for the wooden blocks.

We bought a set for our youngest daughter and are now buying sets for our grandchildren. The quality is top-notch and they're made in the USA (Grand Rapids). Treat your loved ones, and their descendants, with this quality toy!

Egyptian pictograph blocks are what I'm interested in. Do you have them? And where are you in Gr. Rapids? I live there.

I would like to buy a German set and a wagon but I can't determine what size wagon would go with that set. Can you help?

@ Claire: There's 28 blocks in the German set, so will go beautifully with the wagon (that's up to 28 blocks).
