Hello everyone! I'm proud to introduce Hone Alone to The Grommet. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have!
-
Happy Holidays Keith! I'm wondering if this works with drug store disposable razors ?
-
@diane
Hi Diane,
Absolutely. Just get the head wet, make about 6 passes over the pad!
Hope you have a Happy Holiday as well!!
Keith -
Can this be used on pocket knifes?
-
@toby
Hi Toby,
One of the most important parts of sharpening is maintaining the angle of the bevel. Since the razor cartridges keep the blades aligned on the honing pad it'works, but not with your knife. Sorry.
Cheers,
Keith -
@Keith
Will this work for a hair cutting razor? -
Does this work with double edge razor blades?
-
@Charles Hi Charles,
We have not tested DE safety razor blades. If you keep the blade in the razor head and at the proper blade angle it may work but it is not our recommendation. Maybe a good time to switch to a cartridge and Hone Alone!
Thanks,
Keith -
What blades will this work with? Harry's? Gillette Fusion?
-
@Joseph
Hi Joseph,
Yes and yes. It works with Harry's, Gillette, Schick, Dollar Shave Club, Venus, etc. Any and all cartridge razors. We have many (happy) customers that use these blades.
Cheers,
Keith -
Hi Keith - intriguing product!! Does the "moisturizing strip" on most cartridges interfere with the sharpening process?
-
@Kathleen
Hi Kathleen,
Doesn't interfere in the least. I have sharpened my blase so long that no only is the color gone from the strip but most of the strip is gone as well. The strip is supposed to tell you when to change blades. Hone Alone negates the strip altogether.
Happy Holiday,
Keith -
Will this work on double-edge safety blades?
-
@James
Hi James,
Check out the response to Charles. We really don't recommend Hone Alone for DE safety razors.
Thanks,
Keith -
I use a double edge safety razor - will your sharpening block work?
-
@Donald
Hi, Donald,
We don't recommend using Hone Alone with DE safety razors. Please see my response to Charles.

Hi Keith,
what is the difference between Hone Alone and a standard sharpening stone?
Louis -
@John Hi Louis,
The blades in these cartridges are so fine if you try to sharpen with a stone or even super fine sandpaper (3600 grit) you get a sharp blade but a harsh shave since the leading edge of the blade will be pitted. Honing works, as mentioned, I went from 5 shaves per cartridge to 35-40.
Cheers,
Keith -
I shave while in the shower. How well would this hold up if kept in a shower being that it's made from wood? Would it warp with time?
-
@Jeff
Hi Jeff,
There is a finish on the wood but that is always a temporary barrier. I think it would last a couple years before there is any issues. I keep mine on the bathroom counter where it is exposed to water and my wet hands and have used the same one for over 6 years.Still looks great although the finish is off the edges. My wife keeps hers in the shower (about 5 years now) but I painted hers (she loves purple).
Hope this answers your question.
Thanks,
Keith -
Keith,
Looks a lot like another product out there where you have to buy the entire system every year as that is the life expectancy. How about your system? How long before it has to be replaced, and can you just replace the sharpening mat? -
@Lawrence
Hi Lawrence,
I can't tell you how they last. I have been using the same one for over 6 years and it shows no sign of wear and works perfect. I have heard the same from many customers.
Cheers,
Keith -
Hi Keith
Is there any sharpening compound that has to be added after a while or is this just smooth leather stropping ? By the way Have you seen www.Vac-U-Shield.com? -
@Robert
Hi Robert,
The only lubricant you need is water. No compounds to buy. I have used Japanese water stones for over 25 years and like the simplicity.
I just checked out Vac-u-shield and although it wouldn't work for my needs, any way you can collect dust...do it!
Cheers,
Keith -
Hello, Keith. I note the description says to pass the razor over the block in the direction of shaving. Since I shave in multiple directions, does that mean the sharpening should also be done in multiple directions? Thanks and best for the holidays.
-
@Mayer
Hi Mayer,
Actually, you pass the blade in the opposite direction of shaving. Remember, you want to shave your face...not the Hone Alone. That is the only direction you need regardless of how many directions you shave.
Happy Holidays to you too!
Cheers,
Keith
