Hoop Dreams

Have you hula-hooped lately? It’s easy to get lost in the moment when you’re hooping. You feel graceful, strong and expressive. Plus, it’s tons of fun, just like the hula-hooping you did as a kid, but with a little more finesse as you try more fluid, dance-like moves.

Gabriella Redding found her passion in hula-hooping, and she
founded Hoopnotica to spread the word -- not only about how fun hula-hooping can be, but also how it can benefit your body. Hoopnotica videos teach you how to hoop, even if you haven’t picked up a hula-hoop in years (or decades). And the reward? A playful, energizing activity that burns a whopping 400 to 600 calories per hour. It can be hard to find the motivation to stay active. It’s even harder when your exercise routine feels boring and stale. Hoopnotica is captivating, playful and fun -- the ultimate workout reviver. Read More Read Less

I founded Hoopnotica with eyes full of wonder and delight, questioning: "When children become adults, at what point do they silently agree to stop playing?" After spending a year hula hooping half an hour a day, every day, I had lost half my body weight. Afterwards, I was plagued by another question: "Why can't exercise look and feel more like play?" And so began my journey down the rabbit hole, to help other adults feel better about their bodies by taking time to play.

Eight years later, Hoopnotica continues to educate people about new and exciting ways to play, by yourself or with friends, in a giant ring of sparkly plastic. Hoopnotica hoops are just like the one you owned as a kid…only bigger. As adults, we break down the mechanics of fitness so that our customers can achieve their fitness goals with our products, while satisfying our child-like need to laugh and be silly while looking good in front of our peers. Really, what more could you want?

Never was any good at hula hooping. Is there a trick to make this work? It seems like a good way to exercise without stressing joints; I just need a way to keep the darn thing going.

@Rita The "trick" is that the hoops are slightly weighted, which assist you in "keeping it up" by creating momentum. Even if you have been unsuccessful in the past, most adults are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they learn the movement. It really makes you feel like a rock star!

@Rita - and YES; it's a great NON-IMPACT way to work out . No stress. The DVD in the package covers all the instructional basics, including special "trouble shooting" chapters, to get you spinning in no time.

I have this picture in my mind...looking like a whale trying to hoola hoop! I would not look like these skinny, young gals on the video. I am 55 years young but I just can't seem to get past the picture in my mind.

  • Gabriella

@Vicki I TOTALLY get it! The gals I work with (most of them in the videos are in the office, too) are young; slender; and fit. And they hoop every day, sometimes for hours.

But not all of the women who hoop look like these gals- parooze our site and you'll find women of all shapes and sizes who hoop (but the best deal $$ right now is on the Daily Grommet!).

At my largest, I weighed 174 pounds (and I am 4'11!). The happiness that hooping brought into my life largely outweighed my negative self-image, and my "new hobby" helped me to lose 55 pounds over the course of a year.

The really lovely thing about hooping is that in your hoop, you become the center of your own little universe (regardless if anyone is watching). With just the level one instruction (in the kit!) you'll be able to feel in control and graceful...

I am 35 years old; I have had two c-sections and struggled with my weight my whole life. I will never LOOK like the 20-somethings in my office. But I CAN feel young and happy by choosing to play and dance every day... and so can you : )

  • Kate

Does the hoop break down for shipping or does it arrive in a huge box?

  • Gabriella
    Gabriella – Special Guest
    4/23/2012 12:36 PM

@Kate The Travel Hoop (in the kit) arrives in the smallest box- is breaks down into 6 easy to assemble/disassemble segments; easy to ship, store, throw in the trunk of your car/closet/etc.

The larger LED and full size hoops (Desert Rose is my FAVE) are shipped to you coiled down, in a square box that is about 20". They are easily assembled when they arrive, and are best kept full size when they get to you. The full size hoops are the MOST BEAUTIFUL. The Travel Hoops are the EASIEST to store and transport.

We use as little excess packaging as possible : )

Hi Gabriella! I have to thank the Hoopnotica team for introducing hooping to me through an advertisement on Rachel Ray's website four years ago! It totally changed my life and helps me feel young and remember what's it like to dance! I'm 36 but and with kids is much different than my free loving 20's :) Hooping helps me keep ahold of my youth. I love it!

Now my question.... how do you gracefully remove yourself from the circle if someone wants to learn about hooping but might not realize although your happy to share your hoop time is precious? I have no desire to snub but sometimes strangers want to use it for a window to talk and I want to hoop! Trying to keep the kindness, Michele

Ahhh...Michelle... your concern really made me laugh!

Essentially, when we hoop in front of others, it is so amazing to watch that they feel drawn to us and want to know everything about hooping. It can really disrupt a hoop practice to have onlookers interrupting and asking questions.... while we are just trying to get some hoop time in. I get it!

Hooping commands a ton of attention; it's appears so graceful and easy, and hoopers can quickly become a target for curious onlookers. Obviously great if you want to get attention...but not awesome if it interrupts your practice!

I try to hoop in secluded places, like on the beach. I also put my headphones on (tuck my iPod into my bra), and close my eyes (or wear sunglasses).

    Sometimes I pretend I don't speak English : )

And sometimes I bring a few old hoops, and share what I love; knowing that children and adults alike will have a childlike fascination with my hooping. How much instruction I give them is largely based on how I am feeling that day... and how nice they are about it.

I cannot even explain how much Hoopnotica has changed my life. I've lost weight (more to go, don't think bigger gals can't hoop, I'm living proof!) and gained a sense of self confidence I never imagined I could have. As a Hoopnotica instructor, I get to spend my time teaching this AMAZING skill and passing on the hoop love! Life is what you make it, and mine is so good.

Thanks for ur reply. I am definitely going ahead and ordering one...Does the DVD cover the workout for certain problem areas? My main problem area is hips and thighs. its the most difficult area to get rid off that excess fat.. does hooping help to get it in a better shape ? Are there any separate instructional DVDs ?

@Kalpita Pandit: The DVDs give you lots of creative, fun ways to enjoy hooping & while doing so, will help you look & feel great. Gabriella had mentioned that Hoopnotica targets all three areas of Fat-burning cardio (reduces fat); Abdominal Toning exercises (pulling in all the tissue around your middle) and Stress Reduction (cortisol levels really play a big part in the overall shape of our waist).

Check out the Hoopnotica DVD Box Set that will provide all the moves that build upon each other, chapter by chapter, with stills, slow motion shots, and helpful “troubleshooting” section. This should get you going to be in better shape while having a load of fun!

  • Nancy
    4/23/2012 1:19 PM

Do you find that you get especially toned around the midsection? If you wanted to target your muffin top would this do it?

  • Gabriella
    Gabriella – Special Guest
    4/23/2012 1:26 PM

The "muffin top" (the fatty roll that spills over the top of our jeans) is caused by a few different things.

Essentially it can be reduced with:

Fat-burning cardio (reduces fat); Abdominal Toning exercises (pulling in all the tissue around your middle) and Stress Reduction (cortisol levels really play a big part in the overall shape of our waist).

Hoopnotica targets all three! Happy Hooping!

Hi Gab!! I just had the most extraordinary, inspiring weekend training and certifying a new group of HoopnoticaFit and Hoopnotica HoopDance instructors in Philadelphia. One woman wants to use our hoops and curricula to bring healing and joy to victims of gender-based violence through her non-profit, and another is a Leukemia survivor who sees herself finding ultimate health and fitness in the hoop and wants to share it with others. And another one of our new teachers will be bringing Hoopnotica to the kids she works with as a pediatric physical therapist. Do you feel the waves of gratitude washing over you yet? You've brought an INCREDIBLE thing into the world. On behalf of everyone I get the privilege and honor to work with as a Hoopnotica Master Trainer: THANK YOU. <3

My first hoop was a Hoopnotica Poison Apple and my first hoop class was with a Hoopnotica certified instructor. I just gave away my pink and gold travel hoop to a friend and her daughter who, like me, had their lives changed by one weekend of hooping. With that travel hoop, I've hooped everywhere from LA to Miami, Guatemala, Mexico, South America, and the basketball court on a cruise ship. I even got to come visit the Hoopnotica Studio and try the Firefly hoop when it first made its debut. Hooping makes me feel whole. Thank you Hoopnotica for making that possible.

My question - where has been your favorite place that you've taken your travel hoop?

  • Gabriella

    4/23/2012 1:37 PM

I remember the Poison Apple! I loved that hoop... and I am so happy to hear that you have gotten such great use out of your travel hoop. We have redesigned the product 5 times; I bet the one we sell today is so much better than the one you have ported with you all over the world. I'm such a perfectionist-- it had to be JUST right!

My favorite place I have ever brought my TravelHoop was to a very stressful meeting. I literally took a break in the middle of it, excused myself, and hooped out my anger in the parking lot. Then I returned, cool as a cucumber (after re-applying lipstick and patting forehead with paper towels in the ladies room). Winning!

My older sister introduced me to Hoopnotica and hooping in December 2011. I had been going through a difficult divorce, and had a very negative self image as well as a ton of depression. Hooping has helped with both of these things. I have also lost eight lbs and am really begining to tone things. :)

    @ Lauren L.

I am so happy to hear that, Lauren. Eight pounds is HUGE- if you need a little boost, just stop by the dairy isle in the supermarket next time you're there. Take a look at how much mass eight pounds of butter takes up- it's equivalent to body fat mass! Melissa and I both lost over 50 pounds through hooping.... and every week we stocked butter in our fridges to remind us how far we'd come.

Our friends and family were very entertained by the contents of our shelves.

And as for the divorce, and other stressful times, a hooper once told me and I reflect on it often:

    Thanks for your comments!!

is just plain hula hooping enough to take off the weight? i am looking to find classes on loing island, new york. thanks

  • Gabriella

    4/23/2012 3:32 PM

    @ jody

Just plain hooping- with a weighted, adult sized hoop- burns more calories than most aerobics! The real benefit is that it is FUN, and therefore something that you will enjoy and go back to time and time again. If you repeat any new exercise for long enough, you'll see results. With the DVD, you can learn at home, or in a park... in the backyard...

AND if you couple this new obsession with an attention to the fuel you are putting in your body, you'll lose weight really fast.

Hooping is growing in New York, and we have many instructors there. So finding a class shouldn't be an issue. Of course, you'll save a ton on the hoop (and the DVD is basically free with this deal) if you buy today from Daily Grommet.

Let us know how you do!

@ Ruth Tautuaa - The full size hoop is 40" in diameter. The travel size is 42". I will let Gabriella let us know which she'd recommend for a beginner. I'm excited that you're going to give hooping a try and hope that you'll stop back and let us know how it goes!

Hi i was wondering, if i did hula hooping for 1:30 per day, and did it for 2 week, would i see any different?(the hula hoop i have has round beads in the inside rim) the reason why i'm asking this is because i want to lose weight, but i am not ready for the hard core 60 push up and so on, so i want to start of with hula hooping because it's fun.

  • Gabriella
    Gabriella – Special Guest
    5/23/2012 5:04 PM

@ Thuy: If you begin hooping 1 and half hours everyday you will notice a difference in your body. You have the right idea to start hooping. It is a fun, low impact workout that burns up to 600 calories an hour. Having said this, everyone has different body types and all start at different levels of fitness, so some people will respond quickly and some will respond a little slower than others. If you want to see the best results in 2 weeks, you need to make sure you have a good diet. Do some research about good foods to eat, look at different diet programs, and come up with a meal plan that you think will work for you and that you can comfortably stick to. If you are going to put in the hard work 1.5 hours a day to burn calories, don't put it to waste by eating poorly.

Secondly, you need a good hoop and a good workout program. Hoopnotica's acclaimed DVDs go through a number of hooping techniques with easy to follow instructions so that you will become an accomplished hooper in no time. I do not want to discourage you from using your hoop, nor do we want to slander any other product, but in our experience we have heard many reports of the hoop with beads on the inside causing hoopers a lot of pain and discomfort. Also, I don't know how heavy it is but many hoops are too heavy to be effective and can cause hoopers to throw out their back or cause bruising. Hoopnotica's hoops are perfectly weighted for easy hooping.
