bittersweet

Hair Tie Bracelet

Flexible Fashion

Want to put your hair in a ponytail on a moment’s notice? Then you probably wear a hair elastic on your wrist day after day (like about half the women at our office). It’s practical but not very sophisticated, and it leaves dents on your wrist.

bittersweet by Maria Shireen® makes sleek hair tie bracelets out of stainless steel. Slip the bracelet on, then the elastic over to rest in the groove. The metallic designs look at home
from the office to running errands to a night out.

The story behind the bittersweet is super sweet. Shireen Maria Thor and her husband, Arni, are both engineers. One Christmas, Arni created a metal bracelet holder for Shireen’s elastics. He engraved her name in Persian (her mom’s native language). But because Persian reads left to right, it said Maria Shireen—which translates to bittersweet.

Shireen happily donned her bracelet out and about, and women kept asking where she got it. The couple knew they were on to something, and the two engineers became entrepreneurs.

Each bittersweet bracelet holds one thicker elastic or a few smaller ones. Now you can be prepared to pull your hair (or your kids’ hair) back while looking put together.

Hello everyone! I'm proud to introduce our bittersweet bracelets to The Grommet. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have!

Why is this something every woman should have on their wrist?

  • Shireen
    Shireen – Special Guest
    9/24/2015 12:16 PM

@Mike The bracelet has not left my wrist since I received it, because I have a functional need for it! It solves the common beauty etiquette dilemma, avoids getting the painful elastic band indention, and ensure your necessary hair accessory remains easily reachable.

What gave you the idea for Bittersweet?

  • Shireen
    Shireen – Special Guest
    9/24/2015 12:08 PM

@Mike The bracelet started as a present created by my husband. The ever-observant engineer that he is, noticed my habit (a basic necessity!) of wearing an elastic band around my wrist so that I could tie my hair back at work. The problem was the elastic band was an eye sore and it left a dent around my wrist. My husband decided to solve the problem, and did it with style! He created a bracelet that eliminates the pressure from the elastic around the wrist and makes the hair tie look like a stylish bracelet by creating a channel that holds the hair tie in place. The idea was so simple, but so unique that he currently has a US patent pending for the design!

Was developing a business around it an ‘aha’ moment or more of a gradual process?

  • Shireen

    9/24/2015 12:19 PM

@Mike Just like starting any business it is a gradual process however the idea that the bracelet should be made for purchase so that you too can wear your elastic with ease and style was an 'aha' moment.

  • Shireen

Will the paint finish wear off?

  • Shireen
    Shireen – Special Guest
    9/24/2015 12:43 PM

@Tammy The bracelet designs are made of stainless steel have a silver, gold, or rose gold ionized plated finish. The stainless steel bracelets are 316L stainless steel that include 11.5% Nickel, however the ionized plating has no Nickel. This has been made according to the international standard and should not wear off under normal conditions.

Is the hair tie itself made with material that won't break the hair like old fashioned rubber bands did? Thinking of as a gift for a long haired friend, and she seems to have a lot of trouble with her ties damaging her hair. Thanks.

    Sandy

  • Shireen
    Shireen – Special Guest
    9/24/2015 12:45 PM

@SANDRA The bracelet comes with 1 hair tie elastic and that hair tie elastic is an ouchless band that has no metal on it that breaks the hair. Additionally the bracelet can accommodate any type of hair tie you personally own or prefer.

Love the concept, and before I saw the price I was going to buy one for my wife and one for my daughter, who both wear those hair band on their wrists. I don't want to sound like I am devaluing the product but $45 is just way to high of a price. If they were 2 for $50 I can guarantee you would have had a sale.

It is a wonderful concept, but I don't think you are going to get a lot of buyers at that price. Not when they can do what they are currently doing, just putting it on their wrist. I wish you the best of luck. I was so excited about this product, but it is way over priced. Good thought though. Best of luck

@Kat Thank you Kat for the kind words on the concept. It has been very well received by customers who purchased the bracelet at this price and their value because of its daily use. They wear it daily and have changed their idea of fashion when it meets a functional need!

This is a great product... but without any design or texture after you take the hair band off, $45 seems really expensive... Are you planning on coming out with other versions or possibly doing a sale or dropping the price?

I would totally pay $20.00 for this, but $45 is just too much...

And I wrote this before I saw all the other comments about the price being too high... Since that is a common concern, and as a small business owner myself that makes an accessory product as well, I can tell you that you will sell so much more if you meet the demands of the people by lowering the price.

I had to do the same thing, bite the bullet and do it. I was scared that I wouldn't make enough money to cover my costs, but when the amount of sales skyrocketed with lowering the price, I knew I made the right decision...

I hope you are taking ALL these people's comments and really considering that only 1 out of 100 people are willing to 1: take the time to comment on something they think needs improvement, and 2: are willing to say the truth to you, even though you wont like it or it might seem rude. So that would be aprox 300 people that possibly could have seen your product, loved it, but thought it was too much and just moved on...

  • Shannon

    9/24/2015 1:25 PM

That's good your already considering doing that. You can't see any texture or design on the product at all in the pictures or video... on the next one can you please show it more directly so we know what we are buying?

Thanks for getting back to me so fast, before I even finished my last post even!

    @Charlene

I agree the price is way too high. I was considering getting them as gifts for my running buddies - but I can't afford them nor do I think it's worth it for $45. I think even $20 would be pushing the ceiling. Also, maybe another thought for your "near future" planning would be the ability to personalize them (especially for bridesmaids gifts or running buddy gifts).

@Shireen I have three teens who are dancers and another mid20s with very long hair. I detest the plain bands on their wrists that are invariably there regardless of outfit. Two of mine have wrists too small and the third has larger bones. I'll check back when you get both larger and smaller ones, and some for tweets that are much less expensive. Great concept but my family isn't a match.

Shireen, I LOVE this idea and am getting one for my daughter who is now teaching grade school children and ALWAYS has at least one hair tie around her wrist. The price doesn't seem crazy for a piece of nice jewelry that she will wear for years and years to come and (hopefully!) won't turn her wrist green! I don't think some of the commenters on here have bought a nice piece of "wear everyday" jewelry in quite some time or they would understand the value for the price asked! Hug your husband for myself and my daughter because this idea is just WONDERFUL!!! :)

I *love* this concept, but I'm struggling to hit the buy button due to the price. If each bracelet was $25, I'd buy at least 10 - for stocking stuffers and small gifts for friends in a variety of metals. There are a LOT of sports girls, dance girls, and cheerleaders out there who wear bands on their bare wrists. I can foresee this being a HUGE success at the right price point. I will keep my eye on this product in case the price is reduced or there's a sale! :)
