A big thanks to the the Daily Grommet for featuring SpiritHoods today! As a company and as a tribe we love animals, the earth, and giving back. Having the courage to express yourself and be yourself is also very important to us! We hope our product helps people to do just that. We're happy to answer any questions any of you might have :)
I second that! Lets rock and roll!
One thing that impressed me when I learned about your story is that you guys made the original ones for yourselves and got so many comments when you wore them out that you turned it into a business. I sew and sewing fur is no easy task! My hoods probably would have been unrecognizable and unwearable. How did those early ones compare to the ones you are creating now?
@Katherine Klinger: There quite similar actually. But the craftsmanship and the attention to detail on our new hoods is worlds apart. These hoods are the manifestation of a few years of ideas, hard work, and some amazing experiences. We all feel blessed that people have responded to them the way they have. There are many more exciting hoods to come ...
Hi, Marley and Alexander! Love the hats! Can you let us know where you source this faux fur? Does it come from the US? Is it acrylic? For those of us who care deeply about animal welfare issues, there is always concern when buying faux fur because some of it is not so faux after all. I'm sure your hats are not made from dogs, cats, or other "less exotic" animals, but I'd love to know what they are made of before buying one!
@Julia: We work very closely with with all involved in the making of SpiritHoods to bring our customers the best quality faux fur (100% acrylic) out there! I assure you no animals are hurt in our process. This is a fundamental part of our company and in fact we work with four non profits to help rehabilitate endangered animals and their habitat. If you buy any of our products with the "Product Blue" tag your money goes directly to helping that animal :)
How many times in life have I had to answer that question If you were an animal what animal would you be? Many. I always thought of myself as more of a Lionness, but to be honest, that Grizzly is coming out of me this winter. Love these, thanks Grommet.
@Kate: Grizzly is definitely my favorite new hood! I've been wearing it for the last couple weeks and have been loving it! It is also the newest hood that we offer, So in that regard it's also the most rare...
I love your spirit hoods, I just bought one to take to Tahoe with me for ski week. My 9 year old son loves it and wants to wear it while he is skiing however it does not fit over his ski helmet...TOO bad these hoods would look great on the slopes with our helmets on too! Let me know if you decide to make a collection that fits over all shapes of ski helmets. Now that's a Great Idea ti add to your already Very fashionable Company.
@Yvette Pasco: We've toyed with the idea nothing tangible yet tho. We are however launching our kids line on the 14th of February so stay tuned :)
Unfortunately, I find this almost sickening. Faux fur is: brutally murdered cat and dog fur that has been shipped from China. These "cute" hats are not using fake-fur; otherwise it would be stated: synthetic, this is not synthetic!!
@nancy cales: Hello Nancy. It is in fact 100% acrylic fake fur! We are not nor would we ever use cat or dog fur and try and pawn it off to the public. The foundation of our company is based upon helping animals and giving back, no animals are harmed in the production of SpiritHoods :)
@nancy cales: Nancy, what IS "sickening" is how you come on this public forum and accuse someone of wrongdoing without ANY proof. IF you had the proof, you should have made your complaint to Daily Grommet and asked them to take action. Instead you defame and accuse. Since I am not part of SpiritHoods or Daily Gromet, I can tell you that your empty accusations are out of line and absolutely disrespectful to all. Become informed before accusing.
@VictorK: The real deal is that at the heart we love both the Nancys and the Victors in our community and embrace your contributions to who we are. We love that Nancy cares so deeply about animals that she is naturally suspicious of fake fur items. We appreciate your passion and insights day after day. But, it's true that in a public forum things can quickly get uncivilized if tones and accusations aren't kept in check, your personal reply to Nancy included. Luckily there is almost always more than one way to get your point across (see Julia's first question above which asks about the fake fur issue in a very constructive manner). Doing so ensures that a post stays posted and your point of view represented.
@Katherine Klinger: My apologies to the forum,SpiritHoods, Daily Grommet, and Jules.
@VictorK: I would never want you to apologize for your point of view or passion Victor. As Katherine said, that is always welcome. You are a naturally positive guy and I know your support of inventors and entrepreneurs gets your energies up.
(And there was something disruptive about the moon cycle this week. You would not believe how many times I have had nearly this same conversation...about some raw or premature emails and comments. It's affecting all of us--the people socked in my snow have a built-in extra excuse. We are going a bit mental.)
@Jules Pieri, CEO Daily Grommet: Thank you for your kind words Jules...they are much appreciated. VictorK
I understand ye hesitancy regarding the faux fur,I like many other Animal Rights Activist plus my own AR Organization do our research when it comes to faux fur,ye are correct that some is actual fur (Raccoon Dog)but remember, there are ways to test the item/garment to see if it is fake or real...it’s nearly impossible to tell real fur from fake fur by look or by touch. Real furs can be dyed any color of the rainbow, and fake furs can appear very real. Even touching the fur does not always reveal the answer, since today’s fake furs are designed to mimic real fur in every way.
The Burn Test
The best test is the burn test. In general, natural fibers burn and synthetic fibers melt. You probably won’t be able to do this test in a store ( I go into the fitting room and pluck the fur off the item) but if you buy an item or if you already have an item you’re unsure of, cut or pluck a few hairs off of the garment. Using a lighter or a match, try to burn the ends of the hairs. If the tip of the hair burns, crumbles away when you touch it and smells like human hair burning, it is real fur. If the tip of the hair melts, curls up into a hard ball and smells like an unnatural chemical ( melted plastic ), the fur is synthetic.
The Needle Test
This was discovered by one of my own AR people, use a regular sewing needle, part the fur until ye see the hide then take ye needle and poke it through the hide, here is the trick,if the needle goes through the hide like butter and no resistance then it is fake but if it proves difficult to push through and is resistant then the fur is real, hope this helps.
Grommet Visitors there's a fun bit of trivia behind one of today's creators. Alexander is an actor who appeared in the Twilight movies. He was the frat boy who was messing with Bella in Port Angeles when Edward caught up with his thoughts and came to the rescue.
We've had fun connections like this before, remember when we had Benjamin Taylor here (Carly Simon and James Taylor's son) or when Grace Slick stopped by? We've featured a Rock legend's shirts and a former CNN correspondent's product. So we'll act like this is no big deal to us, but honestly, it's pretty cool.
@Katherine Klinger: This is true! It was a good time. . . all of us have passions outside of SpiritHoods, it's what makes the product unique. . . we bring all of these passions to the table.
There is no way I would or could pay for one of these hats! I too am compassionate about not wearing fur, but at a much lower price tag. Just out of my league, I guess!
These caps look amazing! The workmanship really shows through. I could totally see my son wearing them while snowboarding. It'd also be cute to see a gang of them at a football game or something. Fabulous.
I CAN RELATE TO ALL SIDES OF PEOPLES FEELINGS ON ANIMAL FUR, I MYSELF HAVE 3 DOGS RAISE DUCKS,CHICKENS,GEESE, AND PIGS. WE ALSO RESCUE BABY FOREST ANIMALS LIKE SQUIRRELS ECT. WHAT I HEAR THIS COMPANY SAYING IS THEY HELP ANIMALS, AND THEY ALSO MAKE A PRODUCT WHICH REPRESENTS ANIMALS AND I FIND THAT REALLY REALLY COOL! EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO THEIR OWN TASTE AND TO ME I GUESS ITS SORT OF MORE FOR PEOPLE THAT GET BEING ONE WITH NATURE AND ALL LIVING THINGS, NOT AGAINST THEM, THEY AREN'T TRYING TO DISQUISE THEM AS A FANCY COAT, BUT SORT OF HONOR THE BEING THAT IT IS.I'M GLAD TO KNOW THEY AREN'T RAISING ANIMALS FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE FUR, BUT I AM ALSO GLAD THE GROMET FOUND THIS COMPANY. "LOVE THE PRODUCTS GREAT JOB"
