iSi Twist 'n Sparkle

Beverage Carbonation System

Effortless Effervescence

Today’s Grommet comes with a friendly warning: Once you experience this DIY carbonation system, you might find yourself trying to carbonate every beverage in your home. Juice, tea, wine, cocktails, mocktails... you name it, this little gadget can add bubbles to it.

The Twist ‘n Sparkle Direct Carbonation System comes to us from iSi North America (the same company that makes this handy whip creamer). You simply pour your beverage of choice into the reusable bottle, insert a carbon dioxide charger into the handle, then
twist and watch the bubbles arrive. The Twist ‘n Sparkle adds carbonation directly into the beverage, rather than diluting it with seltzer or soda water.

You can jazz up your iced tea, treat the kids to a bubbly juice concoction, or lighten things up at a summertime soiree with white wine spritzers. The possibilities are endless -- and infinitely more interesting than store-bought soda. Half the fun is experimenting with effervescence. The other half is enjoying the thirst-quenching fruits of your labor!

I have a question. Does each charger only do 1 drink?? If so, this makes this charging system rather expensive. A 24 pack of chargers wouldn't last me a week when compared to how much I currently use my SodaStream. It is getting old and I am certainly looking for a replacement. Is there a surcharge for shipping chargers like there is for my large canisters of CO2?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Lori
    4/29/2011 12:47 PM

@Geri Cochrane: Thanks so much for your comment Geri! Each charger carbonates one quart size bottle of liquid. In the case of value for the money, the Twist 'n Sparkle System may be slightly more expensive per liter for carbonated water versus other methods and store bought bottles. However, Twist 'n Sparkle also has advantages over these options in terms of convenience. No other, readily available consumer product offers the benefit of direct carbonation of the beverage of your choice without dilution, which can give parents and adults a healthy alternative to sodas with high fructose corn syrup and other artificial beverage additives as well a allow creativity in crafting dessert and cocktail drinks. This uniqueness of application, with its benefits, is certainly an important component of the economic value of our product.

    @Lori Jung:

Thanks for the information. Since I use my product multiple times every day even carrying them to work, this might not be right for me. However, I do agree with the idea of being able to carbonate anything. I wonder why mine doesn't do that? I often add carbonated water to orange juice or apple juice. It would be good to carbonate them directly. Maybe I will consider this for in the future.

@Geri Cochrane: Thanks for your consideration Geri, it's sincerely appreciated. As I suggested in my response to your question below, the Twist 'n Sparkle reusable bottle set might be a good option for you, as you can keep several carbonated beverages on hand at a time.

@Geri Cochrane: Regarding the shipping, there is not a surcharge for the cartridges. If you add them to your order along with the starter set, the freight only goes up incrementally.

Re; Geri's question about charges for shipping CO2 Sodastream canisters. You no longer have to pay to have them shipped. You can take the empty ones in to Bed, Bath and Beyond and exchange/purchase a refill and not have to pay/wait for shipping. I believe there may be other retailers who do this as well, I haven't checked. I do like the idea of the iSi charging the drink concoction directly, which you are not supposed to do with th the Sodastream. I do not use the Sodastream flavor mixes as I don't care for the taste or the expense. What I do use though is either, just lemon juice or a small amount of sugar free powdered drink mix. Mix the powder with a small amount of water first as it really fizzes up when the carbonated liquid hits it!

Does this system add a chemical to the beverage? If not, it sounds like so much fun - I think my grandkids would love it. May have to get one.

  • Lori
    4/29/2011 1:13 PM

@Rita: Thanks Rita! Carbon dioxide (CO2) is what gives sparkling water and soft drinks their characteristic fizzy taste on the tongue. With the Twist 'n Sparkle pressurized CO2 in each charger travels down the sparkling wand and is passed though the liquid in the reusable bottle.

The Twist 'n Sparkle is a great product for kids and grandkids! You can carbonate everyday juices and iced teas for a healthy, tasty treat. I've even poured carbonated orange juice over a scoop of ice cream turning it into a delicious orange creamsicle float. Kids are certainly wowed when watching the bubbling and fizzing happen right in front of their eyes too!

Oh, and how big are the bottles? I was assuming a liter.

  • Lori
    4/29/2011 1:40 PM

@Geri Cochrane: Thanks again Geri. The reusable bottle is 1 quart, which is a similar size to a liter. Each bottle makes about 3-4 cups of sparkling drinks pending on the beverage you begin with. A set of two reusable bottles is also available for people like you, who enjoy lots of carbonated beverages. A great feature of the Twist 'n Sparkle is that it doesn't take up any counter top space. When I'm not using it I keep the sparkling wand in my kitchen drawer. I usually have one bottle of sparkling juice, one bottle of sparkling tea, and one "adult sparkling beverage" in my fridge at a time. Kids love the juice, my husband drinks the fizzy iced tea, and I highly recommend sparkling-up some Chardonnay-- for a white wine sprizter that's made with 100% wine!

I am trying to find out what exactly is in the starter set for the $49? Did I overlook it or is it just not listed?

As I calculated, I now buy my sparkling water at Trader Joe's for $1 for liter, sometimes less, taking a bottle of filter water from my sink and using the iSi, one charge would cost 0.083 cents This is of course not a full liter because as I have read up on the iSi you have to fill it 3/4 ths right?

So in order to calculate if this will be cheaper in the long run I would like to know what is in the starter packet(I drink about a liter if not more sparkling water a day), how many charges are in there?

@Christine Bastian: You can always find the details for a Grommet feature under its video but above the story on a tab calle 'Details'.

    The Starter set includes:

    1 Reusable bottle

    1 sparkle wand

    3 single-use CO2 chargers

    Plastic and stainless-steel construction

    Care: Hand-wash

With this you will not only be able to continue to enjoy your sparkling water, but you'll be able to add sparkle to other drinks as well.

I just have to say that I have my twist and sparkle for several months and I absolutely love it. One of my favorite things to fizzy up is cranberry juice. I really think it makes it more palatable and less bitter. I have also made homemade soda using Williams Sonoma's soda syrup, which was quite tasty. If you are one of those kitchen gadget people, like me, this is definitely a must buy.

I received a Soda Stream as a gift last year and while I do like it I was disappointed that it could only be used in water. The main reason I wanted it was to re-carbonate drinks that had lost their fizz, or make any beverage fizzy. So, I am making an assumption that this wand can be used in other beverages without damage? If so that would be a major plus to a lot of purchases. Thanks for your response

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    5/1/2011 5:54 PM

@Christina: You are correct, this wand can carbonate any drink directly so it would be ideal for making any beverage fizzy, or re-carbonating drinks that have lost their fizz.

  • Lori
    5/2/2011 2:06 PM

Hi Christina- thanks so much for your comment. Katherine is 100% correct-- the Twist ‘n Sparkle can be used to re-carbonate drinks as well. I’ve used it to re-fizz a bottle of champagne that I didn’t want to go to waste. The Twist ‘n Sparkle keeps beverages bubbly for about the same duration as a normal, store bought bottle of soda keeps in the fridge. The best part of it is, if you make a drink that isn’t consumed, and it goes flat, you can simply pop in another charger and sparkle it up again.

Is there a reason that the Isi brand cartridges need to be used for charging or is it just preferred by the company? Will another brand do damage to the system or are the isi brand cartridges just better in the company's opinion?

  • Katherine

@Melissa G: iSi specializes in this technology and has many commercial applications for their packaged gas products. This product has been developed around their expertise in this area.

  • William Harrington

@Katherine Klinger: The standard CO2 cartridge is 8grams, the twist 'n sparkle is 8 grams. The cost of a 24 pack of CO2 cartridges on line is 8-9 dollars, the cost of your 24 pack of 8gram CO2 cartridges is $20. Your cartridges are slighly different in size so that standard size will not fit. I find it reprehensible that a supposedly reputable company will change their product just enough to charge double the cost of an item available elsewhere.

    @Judiaann Woo:

That's all nice and good but after all it is CO2. It is bad enough that the bottles need to be treated with care especially if you add liquids other than water you are still hand cleanning with a bottle brush. Then the price of the cartridges nails it for me. I was thinking about buying it but it is not cost effective for our family's needs. Bring down the price of the chargers and more people would buy this.

  • Carol
    11/12/2011 9:47 AM

Do the CO2 cartridges have an expiration date? I was planning on ordering what I am guessing to be 9-12 month supply of cartridges but I am concerned about the shelf life of the cartridges. Thank you in advance for your time.

  • J
    11/12/2011 2:29 PM

@Carol: Original iSi chargers are individually weighed and stamped for authenticity. They are guaranteed for life and do not expire. Because they are considered a food related product, the government requires a date stamp on each box but that is not an expiration date. Our chargers contain only pure gas contained in high quality steel. They are 100% recyclable. All iSi chargers are stamped for authenticity with the iSi or Twist 'n Sparkle name, made in Austia, and the manufacture source code.
