Skin Care that Empowers Women

Pure argan oil has been a beauty staple for the women of Morocco for centuries. Its "miracle" properties include reduction of inflammation, high levels of nutrients, and a hefty level of antioxidants to neutralize free radicals (which would otherwise cause aging and tissue damage). In addition to offering unparalleled skin protection, argan oil is light and non-greasy, so it lends a healthy, moisturized glow that's suitable for all skin types. Kahina Giving Beauty founder Katharine Phillips L'Heureux named the company after the queen and prophetess who reigned in Morocco around 700 CE, because Kahina – a heroine to the indigenous Berber women there – represents empowerment and vision for women worldwide. L'Heureux steadfastly maintains her connection with the Berber women via twice-yearly visits; first, to personally select the argan oil used in Kahina products, and second, to oversee the donation of 25% of the company's profits to support literacy initiatives for the women there. Siobhan O'Connor and Alexandra Spunt, the authors of No More Dirty Looks: The Truth About Your Beauty Products and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics, swear by argan oil. (You can check out their top five tips for winter skin care on our blog today.) Kahina Giving Beauty products are not only natural and organic, but a sustainable choice environmentally, socially, and economically. That's the kind of beauty everyone can appreciate.

I love seeing the people who are directly impacted by making a purchase. At Daily Grommet we often point out that every purchase we make amplifies and supports something in the world. Our dollars and where we choose to spend them has a far reaching economic impact. Thank you Katharine for giving the Berber women and their products a voice so that those within earshot have the chance to support them.

I am 44 and have annoying outbreaks of minor cystic acne. I am currently on Claravis (aka Accutane) to try and get the acne under control. The drug is very drying to facial and neck skin, plus it causes pretty chapped lips and dry nose. I have a moisturizer with an spf for daytime use, but I need to find something to moisturize with for night. Something without an spf. Would Argan Oil do the trick?

@Gina: Argan Oil is a anti-inflammatory and will help to restore skin's hydration and balance. It should also help significantly with redness and irritation, and is 100% organic and natural, so can be applied directly to the lips as well. Another option to consider is the Kahina Lotion, which contains argan oil but also beeswax, sodium hyaluronate, and shea butter which provide additional soothing, moisturizing and hydrating benefits to help with flaking.

@Katharine Phillips Lâ??Heureux: Thank you for your input. Do you suggest that I use both the Argan Oil and the Kahina lotion, or just one product?

@Gina: We recommend that you start with just the pure Argan Oil. A dermatologist that we consulted said, "Argan oil is an excellent choice to replenish the skin with healthy oils while on Accutane. As a general rule, the more ingredients in a product, the more possible it is to have irritant dermatitis, or a true allergic reaction to one of the ingredients, even if the ingredients are natural and organic. Sometimes irritation can result in papules and pustules (bumps and pimples) and can appear identical to true acne."

A reminder: just a few drops of the oil should be adequate. The oil should be absorbed readily by your skin.

@Katharine Phillips LHeureux: Wonderful! Thank you very much for your input. I will try the oil and see how it goes. If it works well for me, then I will let my dermatologist know about it so she can pass the info. along to her other patients.
