DIY Letterpress

Imagine crisp, graphic impressions that are sunken into the fibers of thick paper and brought to life with vibrant inks. If the classic beauty of letterpress stirs your inner craft-lover, this Grommet’s for you.

Lifestyle Crafts has made it possible to practice the art of letterpress at home, with its DIY kit. It has everything you need to print beautiful invitations, note cards, stationery and more. The tool that does the heavy lifting... er, heavy rolling... is the Epic 6, designed by Michelle Rasmussen. To
create your custom projects, you roll inked printing plates through the Epic tool, which applies pressure to form impressions on the soft, thick letterpress paper.

The Letterpress Combo Kit comes with the Epic 6 tool, plus die cutting tools, printing plates, packing mats (for controlling the depth of the letterpress impressions), inks and paper. You can also choose additional inks and themed sets of printing plates designed for occasions such as weddings, birthdays, baby events or the holidays. There’s no better way to make a great impression!

Grommet Launch Conversation

  • Hayden

Hello, and thank you for looking at our Letterpress products on the Grommet. My name is Hayden Hewlett, and I have been with Lifestyle Crafts (formerly QuicKutz) for over two years now. I love working for a company that really works hard to keep bringing new and innovative products into the crafting industry.

I'm glad you have the pleasure of seeing the Letterpress at the Grommet today! I wish I could say I was the one who invented the Letterpress, but...I'm not. I do however make a delicious Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich, enjoy long walks on the beach, and an occasional back rub. Did I mention that I'll be here to answer to any questions or comments? Well I am! Post your hearts out!

This looks like a tool that will really let your creative spirit fly!

All of the choices are a bit overwhelming to take in so let us know what questions you have. Check the Details tab (above the story / below the video) for further information. The bonus mentioned when purchasing the Epic 6 & Letterpress Combo Kit is a "License Plate 4x8 Font" die cut kit.

Absolutely. Please let me know if there are any questions. Something that might help is:

-If you don't have a tool similar to the Epic 6, (ie. Big Shot or Cuttlebug) then you will want the combo kit. If you do have one of those tools, then the Starter kit is what you want.

-Make sure to get the cleaning cloths

-The Epic 6 will also cut any major dies available in the market place, which is why there are circle nesting dies in the combo kit.

The Combo kit will definitely get you started, and allow you to get comfortable with the tool giving you some printing plates, black ink and paper. Additional inks, paper and accessories are available as you can see in the listing.

I adore letterpress, and usually make my own cards--so this kit is calling out to me. But I'm not familiar with die-cutting gizmos. Can you explain how they work? I also don't understand what the License Plate bonus is. Thanks!

The dies in the combo kit are dies that you can roll thru the Epic similar to how the Letterpress rolls thru. The tool has a cutting platform (placed on bottom) and cutting mat (placed on top) in which you sandwich the dies in, face up, and roll thru the Epic machine.

The License plate font is an alphabet. It is a die cut sheet that allows you cut out letters to decorate a card, monogram, etc. This rolls thru the epic just like the circle dies. The nice thing that people love about the license plate font is that you get all the letters on 1 4x8 die sheet.

    Does this help?

Hi Hayden! Just want you to know I love the fact that I have all the products now from Lifestyles. I have been having issues using my plates and I just gave up! I am getting ink shadows from around the base of the plate. Also some of them have bent on me. Can you give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong?

    Hey Maria,

I'm glad that you have all of the products and have enjoyed it, and I apologize for any issues you may have had. Printing plates can wear over time and if you have had issues within the first 30 days of usage please contact our customer service at 866 212 3214 and we will replace free of charge any defective pieces. The base of the ink pad will have some some residue on it from ink if not cleaned off in the first few hours of use, but this should not affect your colors or the way your finished product works/looks. Cleaning cloths are essential, especially for anyone like me with a little O.C.D. :) Thank you for the question.

When using the letterpress, can you put a variety of weights of paper stock through? What the heaviest weight you can use? Thanks!

  • Katherine

@Dana Bloomquist: You need to use the thick, soft paper unique to Letterpress that allows plates to make a crisp deboss and print. This paper is necessary to create the high quality look of letterpress projects.

I love my plates and my Letterpress and everyone that see's the results wants one too...will there (or is there) paper that is colored? I've done some with older paper that was cotton but have no idea where I got it- the silver, black, brown, gray, and gold look so awesome on colored paper-we just have to find a place that does it!

@Mary Froehlich: I spoke with Hayden and he says that Lifestyle Crafts doesn't currently have any colors other than white and cream, but there is definitely a possibility that they will release more colors eventually. Their product design team is aware of this question/ request.

@Trena Irby: Yes! The Letterpress works seamlessly with the Sizzix Big Shot, Big Shot Pro, Big Shot Express, Sizzix Vagabond and Provo Craft Cuttlebug. No additional adapters or mats are required.

@Hayden Hewlett: Thanks for the info. What if I don't have the Letterpress baseplate/platform. Can I use the regular Big Shot multipurpose platform in some combination? Thanks!

  • Katherine

@Deanna: I have checked with the Lifestyle Crafts team and although they haven't tested it they assume that the multipurpose platform could work.

Does The Letterpress work on the Sizzix Big Kick, or will I need some type of adapter? Thanks

  • Katherine

@Carolyn Shields: Unfortunately, it does not work with the Sizzix Big Kick and there is no adapter available.

@Carolyn Shields: The letterpress starter kit will work with the sizzix big shot. You just have to adjust what you use to fit the printing plate into the sizzix. I don't know how different the big kick is from the big shot, but you might check it out if you already have the sizzix. I had already purchased the big shot when I saw the letterpress kit.

Will this work with custom made letterpress printing plates, or can you only use the plates made by the company?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    1/23/2012 3:27 PM

@Emily: Unfortunately they can't guarantee that anything other than their plates will work, but it's certainly a possibility.

I read your comment above--would a photopolymer plate work with this product without ink--just ghost impressions? Also can I order a custom plate through you guys?

@faye: The Lifestyle Crafts team is happy to share that "Yes the plates may be used without the ink to give a "ghost" impression on the paper. We think it looks great when it is done that way. Very classy look to it." I will contact you directly with info about a custom printing plate.

How do you get type for it? Do you have to send what image you wanted printed somewhere to have a plate prepared. Is there a way to use this press without having to send things off???

  • Chew-Hoong

@Jeanelle: The Lifestyle Crafts team wants you to know that currently, they only have printing plate sets that come together with different themes. (which are available here at Daily Grommet.) They are finalizing their custom printing plate program where you can design a unique printing plate for special occasions.

Is the clean up easy? If the paint is on the plate, does it come off easily?
