Cut Maps

Laser Cut Maps

Urban Lace

Like urban lace, Cut Maps showcase the unique patterns formed by city streets, parks, landmarks, and natural boundaries.

As a mechanical engineer, Dan Linden explores the intersection between technology and art in his laser cut wall art and other accessories.

His foray into this form of location honoring was personal—he did a
tracing of his former neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, for a local fair. The response was overwhelmingly positive—people started requesting minimalist renditions of their own hometowns. Since then, Dan’s maps have dressed up walls and protected phones with all your favorite locations.

His designs now trot the globe with over 40 cities represented. To residents, the streets and neighborhoods don’t need any labels. You can instantly recognize addresses and stomping grounds. To the unfamiliar, the geographic details are an invitation to explore new territories.

We find Dan’s work a powerful channeling of place. Just like a traditional map, Cut Maps remind you of cities you’ve called home and feed your wanderlust.

Your site doesn't show photos of all the cities. Also, the drop down menu just says US cities or international cities, not the name of the individual cities available?

@Crystal Hi Crystal, under the "Options" dropdown, you will see two options: "US Cities" or "International Cities." Once you select one of those categories, the list of cities will become available in the dropdown menu titled "Design."

For photos of the maps, you can view 18 of the top selling cities under the "Details" tab in the link titled, "Click Here to View Maps of Top Selling Cities," located at the bottom of the page.

@MG Hi MG, the maps are cut on High Density EVA foam and are designed to maintain form and color for a long time. Saying that, the color may fade if exposed to direct sunlight over a very long period of time.

Hi Aaron.... Do you know whether or not Warsaw is one of the international cities that is a laser-cut map? Can requests be made for cities that might not be on the list?

@ Rona Hi Rona, good questions. We are offering Dan's full collection of maps, but he does have the option to produce new cities.

We will have Customer Support contact you today to help coordinate a map for Warsaw.

I'm unclear on whether these are three dimensional. Are the buildings and streets shown at their scaled heights?

  • Aaron
    Aaron – Special Guest
    4/16/2013 3:26 PM

@David Hutcheson Hi David, the map is flat and only depicts streets within the city.

The black markings and lines represent streets, highways and back alleys, so the map does not show any buildings.

Technically, the map is 3-dimensional, about 1cm thick, but there are no topographical variations in height.
