KeySmart

Minimalist Key Organizer

No Jangles

It looks like a small army knife, but instead of holding a bevvy of tools, this clever little invention contains keys. Smaller than a pack of gum, KeySmart is a compact key holder designed to neatly and comfortably fit in your pocket. No bulk and not one jingle or jangle.

Made from aircraft aluminum and stainless steel hardware,
hand sanded and hard coated, the KeySmart is as lightweight as it is durable. Unlike traditional key chains, KeySmart makes it super simple to swap your keys in and out. It can even be expanded to hold up to 10 keys.

The creator of KeySmart, Michael Tunney, wants to change the way people think about carrying keys. Minimalist styling. Maximum functionality. That’s the idea behind this patented problem solver.

It is not quite clear how the KeySmart handles keys with fobs or larger keys. Can you use it with a car key that incorporates the lock/unlock/alarm/open trunk function? Or is it just for old fashioned clean keys?

  • Michael
    Michael – Special Guest
    7/23/2014 12:23 PM

    Both @Barbara,

Flat keys work inside of the KeySmart, and large fobs or car keys can attach to the loop ring (included)

It might be a good idea to incorporate a way to identify the keys, as they come off of their identifying little rings that some of us have. Just a thought. It is a great idea that you have.

  • Michael

@Merrill, Great idea, we do offer color anodized keys on our website called Airkeys. Half the weight and double the strength of standard keys. Full color without the bulk of the additional rubber ring.

@AJ Thinking along the same lines, I have five office-related keys and three home-related keys currently kept on separate key rings. I would think putting the five office keys on one side and the three home keys on the other would be a step in the right direction.

  • Ian
    Ian
    7/23/2014 12:49 PM

@James That is my concerns as well. Dangling keys area pain but they do allow quick visual identification. I can see myself pulling our multiple keys with this before I got the right one.

  • James
    James
    7/23/2014 1:23 PM

@Ian That could be a problem; however, I keep my keys in an order on the key ring and I use the "fob" on the key ring as a point of reference so that I can quickly find the key I want (even in the dark). I would think with this, I would stack them in the same manner, i.e. first key, house key; second key, deadbolt; third key, gate key. Obviously, I would need to know from which side to begin. Already on "Restock" - must be a very hot item! Good on Michael!

  • Joyce
    Joyce
    7/23/2014 7:15 PM

@James I also arrange my keys in a specific order. That way even in the dark I would be able to arrive at the correct key utilizing my car key FOB as point of reference and then proceed tactically. I am dyslexic so this would be wonderful for me!!! I will be buying ten of them for Christmas presents!!! THANK YOU, MICHAEL!!!

This is a GREAT idea. One question about how it works with car keys -- it looks like the key is "fixed" on the pin, meaning it won't rotate to allow you to turn the ignition. Will it work for the ignition key? Or do you recommend just attaching car keys to the loop on the end to have this ability to turn in the ignition? Either way, I'm ordering one for myself and my husband right now.

  • Laura

How heavy is the KeySmart? My mechanic has warned me against having to much weight on my keyring as it can cause problems with the ignition. I would love to order one of these. Currently I use a carabiner ring and the keys left hanging bang against my knees which tends to drive me crazy and make me a rather cranky person to be in the car with :))

  • Amy
    Amy – Grommet Team
    7/23/2014 3:06 PM

    Hi Laura,

The KeySmart isn't heavy at all. You can find this information in the details portion which is located in the box that says "buy". The KeySmart is good for this exact reason and you'll see this in the video. It's light enough that it won't damage the ignition, won't bang against you and no crankiness will ensue!

Michael, kudos & all, for what looks like a great one. I'm in my late 60's, with painful hands, thick, they feel like it, anyway. SO, my question is, how easy is it to put in & take out keys for use? I loved your idea about keeping keys in order, but I'll probably use that & my ubiquitous bottle(s) of polish to mark in someway. You might want to consider a marking dot system. Red for home, green for auto, blue for freezer, etc.

You also spoke of a loop to attach it. Thanks, I got SO tired of digging in my purse for keys, I hooked them to a large hook, (red, of course), & attached to my purse handle. This loop will facilitate that, to a tee!

Good luck to you, & sell lots! I'll purchase one myself, & keep you posted on how we oldsters can handle it. Also, thanks for using your head! If it's easily used, I've got LOTS of seniors I'll HAVE to tell!

Michael, this is absolute genius. My husband has such a peeve about jingling keys in ignition. He's getting one as a gift. Thank you!!!

Long time Grommet watcher/supporter here with message for folks less familiar with the site: If you click on "buy" box below the video, a bunch more pictures and information about the product come up and what is there now answers many of the questions folks have posted here - about weight, what to do with fat keys & accessories, how it works in an ignition, how many keys it holds, how it expands for more keys. You are not obligated to buy at that point, it just gives more specific info to make sure you know what you would be getting if you do buy at next step. Hope this helps others to navigate the site and make purchases they love, just as I have for years.

Michael - Are you familiar with Medeco deadbolt lock keys? They're a touch longer than most but also have a square top. Will these fit? I like this concept but if too many keys must be attached to the loop, it defeats the purpose. You may want to look in to Medeco keys. They're the premier deadbolt locks on the market today.

Great question as many people have these bigger keys. All you need to do is to attach another ring (included in purchase) on the fixed KeySmart loop so the large key can hang off like a regular key chain.

This looks great! It is very similar to an old fashion key cases that my parents and I used when I was a lot younger. I loved it. The only difference was it only had one set of screw fastener and the case was leather with a snap that kept the keys together. They were often given out by car dealers. I am glad to see this.
