Keeping Track

Good sneakers are designed to go the distance, but even the best ones start to deteriorate around the 400 mile mark. Keep track of the wear and tear with mino (pronounced minnow), a shoe insert that counts foot compressions, so you know when to replace your runners. Maker Aaron Burke was training for a half marathon when a foot fracture caused by worn out sneakers, sidelined him. A medical device professional, he set out to help other runners avoid the same fate. His clever mino design has 6 LED lights that are calibrated to progressively light up, as 400 miles of compressions are tabulated. The mino fits into any walking or running shoe, even children's sizes. It’s so weightless, that it’s nearly impossible to feel underfoot, but for symmetrical purposes, a spacer is included for the other shoe.

My name is Erin Ernest, and I am the Social Media Coordinator for Runmino. I became interested in the mino myself, because I never knew when it was time to replace my own running shoes. This led me to having to take lots of time off due to running injuries. I'd love to show you how you can run injury free with the mino! I'm here to answer any questions you have!

Will these work for walking as well as running?

@Nadine Hey Nadine! Yes, the will work for walking as well as running! I use them in both my walking and running shoes and they have proven to be effective in both. Usage is based upon compression rather than actual steps taken - that's what's so great about the product. There's a 300-500 mile rule of thumb that most runners use when determining when to replace their shoes. Many runners log miles, but don't consider the additional walking that they do in their shoes as well.

@Erin Hi, Erin - Looks like a wonderful product! Do you have any clients that use the mino with their golf shoes?

@Sonia The mino is designed for shoes that wear by compressing and that are full cushion.

@sonia - Do you happen to know how exactly golf shoe wear and tear is measured/how golf shoes run out? Perhaps we could create a mino for that :-)

This looks like a neat product. Can you feel it in your shoe though?

@Cassie The mino is very thin, at 2.5mm and weighs under 1/2 of an ounce. Most runners/walkers say that they can't feel the mino in their shoe at all, or if they do feel it- that it goes away after they've been walking or running on it for just a few minutes. We do realize that running bio mechanics is a game of mm so we have provided a spacer along with the mino for the other shoe to make sure everything is"balanced" for anyone who purchases our product. Most people do not feel the need to use it.

Do you have to buy a new mino when you get a new pair of shoes or can they be reused in the new pair?

@Cindy At this time, the mino is a "one time usage" only product. We did this to make it easier for the user to just replace it rather than spending time and having the hassle of recharging and resetting it. It also keeps the costs way down! At only 15.00, the mino is affordable every time you buy a new pair of shoes!

@Karen Hey Karen- right now the mino is for usage in new running shoes only. We wouldn't know how many compressions you've made in your current shoes :-) That's not to say that down the line, we might not create a new product with some sort of density sonar.

    Hello

Just curious as I'm not a runner but I do, do high impact jump training (plyo). Are these designed to take a lot of abuse? High impact abuse?

    Thank you

    Hi Timothy,

Good question. I am not able to give a specific answer via my research however I'm in touch with Erin and we will respond very shortly to let you know.

    Hi there,

Amy from The Grommet team again. I spoke with Erin and the mino was designed to monitor a full cushion running shoe. Although the mino could survive the use in a high jump spike, it would not tell the user anything correlated to wear since the shoe and the use are not the intended measurement. Therefore, it's not recommended for this purpose. Hope this helps.
