Seamless Design

The first time you hold Modern Fuel’s metal mechanical pencil, you’ll understand why Founder Andrew Sanderson calls it a “pencil for life.” It doesn’t feel like the thousands of plastic mechanical pencils that wind up in landfills each year. Solid, sleek, and seamlessly constructed, it fits so well in your hand that it practically becomes an extension of yourself. This is what Andrew wanted. As a student, he was tired of going through packs and packs of cheap pencils. The metal mechanical pencil he designed is precisely engineered to look like one solid piece, with a practically invisible seam where the barrel and tip meet. Suited for a tablet, too, Modern Fuel comes with attachments that let you use it as a stylus. This Made in the USA marvel comes in beautiful packaging suitable for anyone in your life who likes putting pencil to paper—or stylus to screen.

    What size lead does it use? Is the eraser replaceable with standard erasers available at office supply stores?

  • sabrina

    @sabrina

    I see on the details of the order page it uses .5 mm lead and comes with extra erasers. What erasers would I use in the future?

    @sabrina

    Morning Sabrina,

    The pencils use .5mm lead. The erasers are 6.5mm x 10mm. Each pencil comes with 5 extra erasers and I will chat with the Grommet team about stocking replacement packs. They will be available online to buy. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    @Andrew Will the pencil with replacement packs be available for Christmas and what will the price be? Thanks, Betty

    Possibly, Betty! If we see enough demand on here, we will work to get them on site as soon as possible. Stay tuned!

    @Betty

    I'm sorry for the confusion. The replacement packs of erasers will be sold separately online, but each pencil comes with one eraser fitted to the pencil and a pack of 5 erasers. I plan to sell the erasers in packs of 5 for $5, packs of 10 for $8 and possibly a larger pack if wanted. I know that having easy access to erasers is a must to keeping the pencils alive. So I plan to make it as easy as possible to get a hold of them. I’ll do this by making them available through the same channels as the pencils.

    The pencil does not seem to have a clip for holding it in a shirt pocket. Do standard clips fit it?

    @Mark

    Great question. The pencil does come with a clip. It is a black powder coated clip for both the brass and aluminum. Please check out the product photos to see the clip. I love the look of the pencil without the clip, but I know it is a must have for most people.

    The pencils are shipped from Grommets office, so not sure on shipping cost, but I am sure Grommet have shipping options in their checkout process. @Mike can you help calculate the shipping costs please?

    Hi Kieren, at the moment we don't have a way of shipping to the UK outside of Bongo, which is a third party service that ships internationally. I'm happy to answer any questions you have about it.

    I have rheumatoid arthritis and need a pen/pencil with a thicker barrel. Do you have a suggestion? I hate throwing away all those plastic pencils too!

    @Sue

    I am sorry to hear that. I would suggest the lighter aluminum version as it would require less grip force. The pencils are .375" or 9.5mm in diameter so thicker than your average pencil but not too thick. I think the lightness and durability of the aluminum version would be a good fit.

    @Andrew

    This pencil looks fantastic.

    I have dry and very smooth hands and I am concerned I will not be able to maintain a grip. The $5 plastic mechanical pencils have some sort of gripper. Will you have something like that available? I know that addition would cut into the look of the "line", but the pencil looks so smooth I think I would need something. (I do not have any hand issues.)

    Does the eraser work as the stylus or is this a different tip. If it is a different tip are you also selling replacement styluses<

  • Andrew

    The stylus tip is a different tip to the eraser. We can also make these available. The stylus tips are a standard 6mm stylus tip though.

    Hi Kathleen, thanks for the questions. You load it just like a regular mechanical pencil underneath the eraser!

    @Kathleen,

    Mike is correct. The pencil will hold up to 4 sticks of lead at a time. It also comes with a pack of 12 sticks of lead.
