Women's Shoe Ice Grips

On-Trend Traction

Nothing damages your pride—or ruins your outfit—faster than wiping out on an icy sidewalk. Mynxx lets ladies rock their cute shoes in wet weather without the risk of a fall.

These flexible, water-resistant, rubber ice grips for shoes fit snugly over flats, loafers, and boots with low heels to help gain traction in slick conditions. Unlike snow boots, they don’t add bulk. Mynxx are streamlined and low-profile—often barely
noticeable.

Though they are compact, they have enough stability to keep you upright. Stainless steel spikes—coated in titanium nitride, to extend their life—line the soles to help anchor you in a dusting of snow, or in icy or rainy weather.

Founder Veronica Barrow is a fashion-conscious architect who was tired of navigating icy New York streets in her fashionable footwear. After she AND two friends all wiped out together on New Year’s Eve, she began drafting ideas to solve this style-versus-safety problem.

Mynxx fold up easily and store in a travel pouch—perfect for commuters to stash away when they arrive at their destination. Thanks to Mynxx, you and your shoes will still look good while avoiding a wipeout.

Hello everyone! I'm proud to introduce Mynxx to The Grommet. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have!

This idea came from you and two of your friends slipping on ice and I hope you are all ok. How soon after did you put a business plan in action?

I started sketching and brainstorming the idea almost immediately (a few days after the slipping incident). But, at that time--since I was working full-time as a Project Architect--it was more like a sketchbook doodle/brain teaser. I, ultimately, turned the (sketchbook) page and moved on to the next doodle. It wasn’t until about 2-3 years later (after the economy went south in 2008/2010 and the architecture firm that I was working for collapsed), I rediscovered the sketch and decided to take action and try to solve the problem real-time.

It took me about 6-8 months to put a solid business plan together, by taking business plan classes, seeking business counseling and taking advantage of the wealth of free business education aids that New York City has to offer. That same year after finishing my business plan, I entered it into a borough-wide small business competition held by the main Brooklyn Public Library. I was chosen as one of the six finalists to win an award to help start a small business in Brooklyn!

This is such a problem solver for so many women who deal with snow, but it’s also fashionable. How important was that to you in developing it?

The aesthetics was the primary factor for me when I was developing Mynxx Ice Grips. There are a lot of ice grips on the market. And while they all strive to serve the same purpose (to help prevent people from slipping on ice and snow come winter time), very few seem to challenge the overall aesthetics of the product. There wasn’t a pair of ice grips that I myself felt comfortable wearing while commuting around NYC to work or an evening out. They were all very utilitarian and seemed geared primarily towards a male market.

So, that set off a red flag for me. Living and working in New York City (fashion capital), aesthetics and fashion are all around. So making a product that was fashion-conscious women could wear, and feel safe in, was key. The utility of the product is still there but, visually, it’s softened and much more subdued. The accent of gold-plated spikes and other subtle accessories helps make Mynxx feel more like a feminine accessory rather than simply a robust utility product. Being a creative and visual person, I take function and form into consideration when designing--whether it be a house, an instrument, or an ice grip!

@Veronica I am less interested in the aesthetics and more into function. I have yak tracks but my issue on all of these is getting them on and off. I would love to see a product that let's me step in and snap closed.

Why is this something women should have with them throughout the winter?

  • Veronica

    12/9/2015 3:53 PM

Not every day during the winter months is a snow boot day. When those grim days are around, we strongly advise women to *wear their snow boots and be safe out there! But, there are also plenty of days/weeks between snow storms when the snow is melting, or has turned into patches of ice on the ground. And, at this point, we’re all already tired of trekking around in our clunky boots, especially to work or an evening out. Talk about an outfit killer! But, most of the shoes that we’d like to wear don’t have adequate treads on them. This is the perfect time for pulling on your pair of Mynxx. You can head out feeling great (head to toe) and secure.

Mynxx Ice Grips are not only fun to style with (they come in 4 colors that you can mix and match depending on your outfit and shoes), but they are also super lightweight and portable, making them extremely easy to carry around in your handbag, clutch, or backpack. They are also cost effective, so you can keep a few pairs in different locations so that you are never without easy access to them when heading out to brave the slippery winter streets. Leaving a pair in your car, one near your shoe rack at the front door, and one in your bag.

We are beyond thrilled to be launching on The Grommet this year. And, after only 1 year from our official product launch date, we are excited to become a part of The Grommet’s community of small, young innovative designers. We really hope that women and men from all walks of life, lifestyles and cities will enjoy the style, utility and ease of using Mynxx Ice Grips on their regular flats, loafers and riding boots this winter and beyond.

Can you tell me how this isnt the same thing as Yax Trax that have been out for years now?

  • Veronica

    12/10/2015 10:37 AM

Hi @M. Certainly. As we all know, ice grips have been around for decades, and come in many different styles for various traction and terrain! Mynxx Ice Grips are a new take on the traditional ice grip, as they focus primarily on women's dressier shoes and boots. While many ice grips out there can also fit women's dress shoes, they typically tend to be more bulky and utilitarian in feel and aesthetics. Mynxx are designed to be chic *and functional in the snow and ice, for the city woman going to work or play.

    @Veronica

I'm sorry, but I don't see the benefit of this as a fashion accessory, since you cannot wear spiked shoes inside. Going to work or play in the snow, who's looking at your feet, anyway? Seems to be an overlap with yak tracks, which are even more unobtrusive than this product.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    12/10/2015 12:02 PM

Hi Margaret, Mynxx might not be for everyone and that's ok. While they serve the same purpose (keeping people from falling and hurting themselves in winter conditions) Yak Trax was designed more to fit over boots, while Mynxx was designed with more fashionable shoes for work and play in mind. That's the difference. So the function is the overlap, but the fashion is what really sets Mynxx apart.

How does the material handle deep cold, say -30 to -40 ?

  • Veronica

Hi @Jennifer. Mynxx are made from a thermoplastic elastomer which helps prevent the ice grip from becoming brittle, or loosing its elastic properties, in extreme temperatures.

These look great! My daughter wears a size 5-1/2 to 6. Was the Small Mynxx tested on size 6 shoes? I worry that the Small will still be too long to get good enough tension to hold them to her shoes. Thanks!

Hi @Lee and @Sue. Yes, the lowest recommended shoe size for the Small Mynxx, is a 6. However, we are planning on introducing an XS soon!

I wear a size 5. The small is listed as fitting shoe sizes 6.0-7.5. There are many women who wear less than a size 6 and live in areas with snow and ice. Any plans for an extra small or is there any way to make the small fit a smaller shoe?

It looks like a great idea for women's shoes. Do you have any plans to expand further to come up with styles for men's shoes or work boots?

  • Veronica

Hi @Mark, one additional thing to note: while Mynxx are geared towards women's shoes, that doesn't mean that they completely omit men from buying them. As long as the size securely fits the shoe, they can be worn by anyone.

  • Mark
    Mark
    12/10/2015 1:39 PM

@Mark Also, will the Mynxx be able to attach to a sneaker, or is it really just designed to fit a shoe with a heel? Thanks.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    12/10/2015 2:36 PM

A medium should work for a size 8 sneaker, Mark! And yes, Veronica says that she has seen some users put them on sneakers.

  • Veronica
    Veronica – Special Guest
    12/10/2015 2:39 PM

Hi @Mark, we don't specify conversions from women's to men's sizes. Mynxx are designed to accommodate a standard women's riding boot or loafer-styled shoe (so they have a more slender profile). Due to the wide variety of shoe styles and toebox shapes out there, there's no exact fine line that can drawn between flat-heeled shoe styles that do fit and those that don't. However, there is a specific 1-inch maximum heel height that should be observed for the best and safest fit. For sneakers, while Mynxx are not designed specifically for them, Mynxx may be able to fit onto the more slender sneaker styles that have minimal or low-profile treads and soles

Hi @Beth, thank you for that positive feedback! Yes, we felt the same way as well about various ice grips that we had previously. Improving upon the aesthetics was one of the main driving forces behind developing Mynxx Ice Grips for Women.

Hello Veronica, I had total knee replacement and one of my big fears now is sliding on the ice and landing on that knee! I think this product is great. I noticed that most of the picture examples show a pointed narrow toe box. Does the Mynxx have some stretch and flexibility to fit over shoes that might be a little wider or boxier in the toe area? Thanks, Judy

  • Veronica
    Veronica – Special Guest
    12/10/2015 12:11 PM

Hello @judy, While Mynxx Ice Grips fit best when on more rounded toe boxes (as well as pointed toe boxes), that doesn't make them exclusive to just slender shoe styles. We've seen women wearing them on sneakers and other shoe types. However, they are designed to accommodate a standard riding boot or loafer-styled shoe. Due to the wide variety of shoe styles and toebox shapes out there, there's no exact fine line that we can draw. However, if you tend to have more square or wider-toed shoes, we'd advise trying on a pair to see how well they fit your specific shoe style.

Would these work for men as well? Men's shoes are generally wider than women's.

  • Veronica
    Veronica – Special Guest
    12/10/2015 12:45 PM

Hi @Julian, while Mynxx are geared towards women's more slender shoes, that doesn't necessarily mean that they can't be worn over men's shoes. As long as the ice grip securely fits the full shoe and toe box correctly, they can be worn by anyone. However, we are planning on coming out with a dedicated men's line of ice grips.

These do look easier to install on your shoes. Do you guarantee the spikes, should they come loose? I have owned similar ice grips and the spikes have come loose. Thank you and best of luck with your company!

  • Veronica

    12/10/2015 1:23 PM

Hi @MJ. The spikes should not come loose while walking. They require relatively strong /firm pressure (in the direction from the insole to the out-sole) to remove them from the ice grip body when they need to be replaced.
