Antler Chews

Chew on This

Antlers shed by wild deer and elk might seem more fitting inspiration for a Georgia O’Keeffe painting than for a pet products entrepreneur. But the nutritional value of the discarded appendages wasn’t lost on Allison Sims, who collects shed antlers and uses them for healthy, long-lasting dog chews that are chock full of vitamins and minerals.

Allison got the idea to sell antler chews after seeing how much her own dog, Kai,
enjoyed chewing on antler remnants. With the help of her business partner, Will Nichols, she gathers the antlers, which are naturally shed each year by deer and elk, and then sizes, cleans, and packages them. The antler chews won’t splinter, stain or smell, and they’re packed with calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, and other beneficial nutrients. Our canine testers loved gnawing on them -- and dog owners can take comfort knowing they’re free of hormones, antibiotics, steroids, and animal byproducts.

A naturally irresistible chew... what more could a canine ask for?

I am fostering a dog that is a TERRIBLE chewer and goes through regular rawhides in minutes. I got her a deer antler (from a local store) and it is still 98% intact three weeks later! I tried a split antler first, and she gnawed through that in one evening, so those of you with very aggressive chewers must get the unsplit antlers. These prices are comparable to what I paid. The antler will last long enough to make it worth the cost. I highly recommend antlers to anyone with a bad chewer.

@AJ Thanks for recommending antlers! They are wonderful for dog who are strong chewers. That's how we came up with the name for our big antler size... the strong chewer!! Enjoy!

I have a medium size dog but a very strong chewer. Should I buy a medium or strong chewer? What is the difference? He is a bull terrier and can not have any raw hide.

@Jan - I would probably get the Large or Strong Chewer. The biggest difference is the length.

We have a lot of unwanted deer around our home. The last thing we want is to have the dog chase the deer thinking yummy, more treats. We'd love to get the giant chew but will Bubu associate it with the real deer in the backyard?

@ Bubu's aunt: Great question. We wouldn't want Bubu to be confused as to what "a yummee treat" should be. I have a message in to Allison and will let you know.

@ Bubu's aunt: While I am not sure your dog will associate our antler chew with an actual deer, I would hate to introduce an issue to your home. We have lots of deer on the ranches we frequent and our dogs (who chew antlers daily) never chase them. They are far too fast for our boys!

I'm not sure what size I should get. We have a minpin, minature daschund, and basset hound. I was thinking (small) for the little ones and (medium) for the basset. I don't want them to be too small, incase of getting caught in their throats.

@ Linda E.: I've pulled this info that's in the DETAILS Tab (under video) on the page where The Red Dog antler chews is featured. Please go there to read more info.

    approx 3-4”

    1" diameter

    Great for pint sized dogs

    approx 4-5”

Great for small to medium sized dogs

    approx 5-8”

Great for medium to large dogs

    approx 6-10”

Great for dogs who are very aggressive chewers. Labs and retrievers in particular love this size.

*Since the antlers are a natural product, size, weight and length will vary. We suggest buying a size larger than you think you will need.

Labradoodle Endorsement!!! Our labradoodle, Louie, absolutely loves, loves, loves these. We got him the "strong chewer" and we can confidently let him chew to his heart's content. Great product!

Shed antlers are pretty much the only thing my Golden Retriever can gnaw on without demolishing right away. He goes through Nylabones like they are butter cookies. They don't smell, they don't splinter and they LAST. I highly recommend these for anyone with a dog who is a determined chewer.

Unhappy with my purchase. I ordered a size large antler for my labradoodle. The antler piece I received was 4" long and had a 1" circumference. According to the description the large should have been 5"-8" long. I feel as if I overpaid for the product as well as the description misrepresented the actually product sent.
