You-tility

Nomad makes useful items that double as device chargers, freeing you from the need to always have a traditional charger on hand. Inventively woven into key chains, carabiner clips, and battery packs, Nomad makes it easy to stay powered up. When co-founder Noah Dentzel started thinking of these solutions, he himself was a bit of a nomad. Traveling around Spain, he was tired of trying to keep a phone charger handy. Noah’s idea: nest device chargers into everyday items. With co-founder Brian Hahn, the two conceptualized the Nomad chargers, starting with the NomadKey. This small USB jack clips easily onto a keychain, so you never have to worry about forgetting your charger (unless you also forget your keys!). Noah and Brian kept the momentum going with the NomadClip, NomadPlus, and the Apple Watch Charging Pod. Like the Nomad name implies, these accessories are ready to keep you connected anywhere you go.

Will the Nomad with Apple Lightning Connector work with an iPhone with a Lifeproof case on it? The Lifeproof case has a "door" that seals off the charging port, which is then recessed a bit, and some larger chargers do not fit through that door.

  • Noah

    2/20/2015 1:16 PM

@James, NomadKey and NomadClip do work on the Lightning cases for iPhone 5/5s, but not with 6/6 Plus. This is because the case comes in really tight around the Lightning in not allowing any 3rd party cables (that we can tell yet at least). But when you're in a pinch and need to charge up, we think it's worth it to take off the Lifeproof. And all that said, NomadKey and NomadClip work with virtually all other cases for iPhone that we've been able to get our hands on.

I am really confused by these products...especially the big square thing. It is described as looking like a house key...but I have never seen a key shaped like a box. But, that is not what is bothering me. I don't understand these items. At first I thought that you could charge your things on these items by themselves...but that isn't possible, is it? You would still have to have a computer available somewhere to plug in these items, wouldn't you? I have watched the video over and over and still do not understand this. The box thing has a big plug on one side so you would have to have a place to plug it in for it to charge something? And the other one that looks sort of like a handle...that would have to have a computer too...right? You can't just plug your phone onto it and expect it to charge, right? And the little one...that one has two things on it too...so you would have to have a computer available to stick the small thing in and the handle looking one. But the box...that one just has a regular plug...I am so confused. Where is the convenience if you have to still find a computer somewhere to stick the one end of the item in it, and the other to your device? And the box...I don't get that at all. What do you do with that one? Just plug it into a wall somewhere and then plug your device into it somehow? Please explain....thank you.

Hi Sandra, I understand the confusion. To best simplify it, think of the Nomad products as replacements for your charger. They don't charge your devices on their own, but rather make sure you have a charger with you wherever you go. That's why they are seamlessly molded into items you would always use. You still need a power source as you mentioned, but as long as you aren't forgetting your keys, you're not forgetting your charger.

It looks like you need the NomadKey to use the NomadPlus, is that correct and if so, why are they not sold as a set (don't have a use/desire for Clip)? Also, if I am reading it correctly, once you have charged the NomadPlus (by plugging it into the wall), you can use it later to charge your phone without being plugged into anything. Is that correct?

  • Sandra

Hi Sandra and Cheryl, you can use the NomadPlus as a power source once it has been charged, yes. You will need a cable to charge your phone.

You'll see that we do sell sets of all three for iPhone and Android above, but you do not need the NomadKey for the NomadPlus. We just used it to demonstrate the NomadPlus uses a USB as a connection.

Mike...is what Cheryl said correct about the box/nomad plus item? Once it is plugged in and charged, can you take that with you and charge your items without having to plug it in anywhere? Once charged, will it charge your items by itself?

  • Noah
    Noah – Special Guest
    2/20/2015 2:30 PM

@Sandra, yes! The idea is that you can charge from the wall, as you normally would with the wall plug, and then charge FROM the NomadPlus on the go (disconnected from the wall). And, of course, plug it back in to charge from the wall again while you're on the go, too. It has pass-thru charging to while your phone is plugged into it and into the wall, the device will charge the phone first and then itself, and when disconnected from the wall you can just charge from it as you would from a standard portable powerbank. Hope that helps!

@Stan Hi Stan, all products accommodate the Samsung Galaxy 5 model. The NomadKey and the NomadClip cables are built with the MicroUSB needed to charge this and other Samsung models. The NomadPlus is designed to be used with the Apple Wall Plug Adapter but can charge any mobile device that can use a USB to charge (think Samsung phones, Apple Phones, Action Cameras, etc).

    Thanks for checking out Nomad!
