The Frozen Scoop

“Why not bring back the classic ice cream sandwich -- only better?” With that thought, chef Christian Nye found his new calling. He and his wife Kelly, who created the business plan, are the duo behind Nye’s Cream Sandwiches of Wilmington, N.C. The premise is simple: Pair chewy cookies with gourmet ice cream. It’s the execution that makes Nye’s so irresistible. Christian personally develops all the cookie recipes and ice cream flavors, and each frozen treat is prepared, assembled and wrapped by hand. Nye’s offers a range of classic flavor combinations, such as vanilla bean ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate ganache cookies; strawberry ice cream paired with two sugar cookies; and, one of their bestsellers, peppermint ice cream complemented by fudge-like chocolate cookies. Christian also gets inventive, debuting seasonal flavors -- such as blackberry cobbler, pumpkin spice, caramel latte, and key lime pie -- that make our mouths water just thinking about them. It’s fitting that Nye’s Cream Sandwiches got its start because Christian gave up his job as an executive chef to find a new culinary pursuit that would allow him to spend more time with his family. In doing so, he created the ultimate family treat.

Hi everyone! My name is Christian Nye, and we are so happy that Nye’s Cream Sandwiches have been chosen as today’s Daily Grommet! Nye’s Cream Sandwiches are handcrafted, small batch ice cream sandwiches - each one is prepared, assembled and wrapped by hand. I have personally developed the recipes of each cookie and each ice cream flavor we make. Plus, we use the best ingredients we can find, including rBST free milk, perfectly ripe fruit, fine chocolate, and pure vanilla extract. Sure, we could turn out a lot more if our sandwiches were mass produced, but that’s not what we’re all about. Once you taste our sandwiches, we’re confident that you’ll ask for Nye’s Cream Sandwiches by name. I am looking forward to answering any questions you may have about our sandwiches! Have a Nye’s Day!

We had an assortment of Nye's ice cream sandwiches served during the reception at our daughter's wedding on Bald Head Island, N.C. in June. They were outrageously good and a fun, informal way to encourage our guests to enjoy some food while also enjoying the open bar.

  • Karina

    9/5/2012 1:23 PM

@ Don--it's only $6.13 per sandwich, and that includes the shipping! Not so bad, considering that specialty cupcakes in my town (we're talking a regular, small cupcake like you would bake at home) are $5 each and not nearly as tasty! I'm considering buying some of these for a special treat for our 10th wedding anniversary.

@ Don ---oops! My mistake Don. I misread the page. I see that it would be $30 for shipping, which would bring it to $9.88 per sandwich! That's a bit steep....I agree with you.:0)

The cost of the sandwiches are $5.00 each and there is a standard $10.00 packaging fee that covers our cost of shipping cooler, dry ice, and packaging materials. I actually ask that very same question when my wife buys a latte! The truth is there is a great deal of cost when making great ice cream. The average cost of a pint of quality gelato or ice cream is around $7.00. This is produced quickly and put into pints, not very much labor. We add a second element, and cost, to this by producing cookies, hand making, wrapping, and labeling each sandwich. Yes, these are not cheap and not for everyone but we are confident once you try one you will want another.

Thanks again for enjoying, we greatly appreciate it. Christian Nye

As much as I love good ice cream, I just can't bring myself to spend nearly $80.00 (including shipping) for 8 ice cream sandwiches. (I'm not complaining! I simply can't afford it!) I guess I will have to add this to the list of things I want to do once I win the lottery! I'm sure they are delicious and if I am ever in your neck of the woods I will be sure to try one.

I understand completely and again, I was not complaining about the product. It is the shipping charge that puts this over the top for me. I also understand why the shipping is so expensive. Not much sense in making a great ice cream if it's going to melt before it gets to the consumer! Perhaps some day you'll have a distributor near Harpers Ferry, WV, and I can try them then!

    Jim,

Where are you located? We are in the process of establishing a distribution network that we hope will bring Nye's Cream Sandwiches to a retail store near you. That would eliminate the shipping and packaging cost and bring the sandwiches to a more affordable price point. The shipping costs (packaging, dry ice and Fed Ex) are really out of our control. We hate that those factors drive the price up to a range that many people cannot absorb.

@Roberta Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I can certainly see why this Grommet might fall in the indulgence category for most of us. I guess when I think about people like Christian and his Cream Sandwiches I think...would I want him to make them with less hand labor and less special ingredients so they could cost less? Theoretically perhaps...but then they would just be similar to what I can get in my local grocery store. So when you consider that shipping something frozen is an expensive proposition, I would want it to be very worth it to bother. As it is for something like Christian's family's labor of love. Certainly not for every day...but worth it when you can splurge.

Maybe crazy that an ice cream sandwich could have groupies, but these things are different. You can see the quality and even tell that they're special just by holding one. Taste it at your own risk, one bite is addictive. The chocolate cookie/peppermint ice cream variety may be the best dessert in the world. They're so rich and intensely flavored that one can be shared. . .but you would have to love that person a lot.
