One Story At A Time

Once upon a time, two publishing veterans set out to save the short story. Maribeth Batcha and Hannah Tinti are the co-founders of One Story, a nonprofit literary magazine that publishes one short story in each issue. Their goal is to deliver short stories in a friendly format that’s artful, entertaining and easy to fit into your life. You might not have time to read a novel, but a short story is the perfect indulgence before bedtime or when you’re riding the train to work or waiting in the lobby of a doctor’s office. It’s short enough to be read in a single sitting, yet rich enough to make you forget your surroundings and draw you into the writer’s world. One Story subscribers receive a new issue every three weeks, either by mail or electronically. There are no ads, just great fiction. If you love reading and discovering new talent, or if you want to treat your favorite bookworm to something special, One Story is just the right fit.

Happy Holidays everyone! I’m Maribeth Batcha and I’m the publisher and cofounder of One Story. My partner, Hannah Tinti and I, started the magazine because we wanted short stories to be fun and accessible to all. We send one great short story in the mail or on your Kindle every three (to four) weeks. It's like a story of the month club. We’re a small nonprofit and are so glad that the Daily Grommet has chosen to feature us today. It’s like being Queen for a Day!

All this week I’ve been in our office sending out gift cards and first issues. Being an elf can be a little lonely, so I’m so happy to take a little break and be here to talk to you. Got questions about writing? Short Stories? The ins and outs of the U.S. Postal System? I’m your gal.

Hi Maribeth, is there an audience or sensibility that the stories you're selecting will especially appeal to? Urban hipsters, midwestern farmers, college students, retired snowbirds? If I were to order a subscription for a gift, it would be helpful to feel confident that that stories would be appropriate for the recipient.

@Wendy: We look for stories that are narratively satisfying - a good story. Some are more experimental than others, but we really look for stories that make us feel something and look at the world in a new way. We have a pretty broad readership - from hipsters to great grandmothers, and that makes us extraordinarily proud. If you look at the past stories section of our web site, you can read the first 200 words or so of every story - that should give you a good idea of the range.

As both a reader and writer of short stories, I really appreciate the quality of selections from One Story. I truly sink into each one and the short format feels doable, unlike a full collection which can be daunting when things are hectic. Great gift idea too!

@AmyD: You can try both for free and can cancel either at any time so you're not locked in. But we can't transfer them for you. I wish we could!!
