Fancy Filigree, Everyday Elegance

Tom Schwartz has a passion for filigree, a technique that uses twisted metal threads to create delicate, lacy designs. He’s worried that the ancient craft is dying out among artisans in China as the nation becomes more technology oriented. While filigree has traditionally been used as a decorative element in metalwork, Tom is convinced filigree deserves to be the main attraction. We think so, too, after seeing his gorgeous collection of filigree earrings. Jules spotted them on a trip to San Francisco, where she visited Bell’occhio, a shop run by Tom’s wife, Claudia Schwartz.

Each design is handcrafted from continuous pieces of filigree thread. The Chinese artisans who curl, twist and plait the metal threads to form these pieces are committed to preserving their country’s jewelry making heritage, and Tom’s design direction ensures a perfect marriage of historic skill and modern taste. We’re excited about the symmetrical earring based upon 17th century calligraphy and adorned with one freshwater pearl. We’re also featuring two asymmetrical scrollwork designs, and you can choose either rhodolite garnet or cubic zirconium embellishments. Who knew filigree could be so versatile?
