Founders Indu Menon and Chitra Gopalakrishnan are striving to preserve the traditional cotton weaving craft while benefiting the economy in Kurala, India. Their weavers use pure cotton yarn, which they spin and weave slowly to achieve a soft, slightly silky texture.
Known locally as thorthu, this fabric is airy, thin, and more durable and absorbent than if it was made commercially. Kara Weaves creates a variety of goods, including their standout lightweight cotton robe.
Everything is hand made on traditional wooden looms, so no two pieces are exactly alike. The yarn, the weaver, and even the dye are all unique to that particular item. The result is one-of-a-kind, supple-feeling cotton that will add richness to your body and your home.
